Saturday, 27 December 2008 Another freezing day awaited us this morning as we toured the farm houses of the Hokkaido University (北海道大学). The snow-capped buildings and chimneys reminded us of those structures found in Europe. Lunch was a simple affair at a tiny ramen store near Sapporo station as recommended by M. As usual, the noodles did not disappoint in terms of quality and quantity. After lunch, we ventured our way to the Ishiya Chocolate Factory (白色恋人) located at the western suburbs of the city. The factory building and the open spaces were attractions of their own. It was an added bonus that the factory grounds were opened to the public free of charge even though a fee must be paid to witness the chocolate making process. While the chocolates might not taste out of this ... read more

Friday, 26th December 2008, Sapporo "Welcome to Sapporo" said the big signboard as we came out of JR Sapporo Station. Earlier, we had baded goodbye to Mr Mori and Muku at Niseko Resort before continuing our 2 hour train journey to Sapporo. It wasn't difficult to fall in love with Japan's fifth largest city (1东京,2横槟,3大阪,4名古屋 and 5札幌). The well-planned city have what everything Tokyo has to offer. Yet, it have what most major Japanese cities are lacking ~ the crowds. It never get too crowded in Sapporo even during the rush hours. With 3 subway lines criss-crossing the city, it was easy to move around in this relaxed city. I loved their weekends as the one-day subway ticket (donni chika kippu) costs only 500 yen for unlimited travel. On other days, the same ticket was 800 ... read more

25th December 2008 ~ Hirafu Village, Hokkaido Christmas last year was special for us as we spent our time at the slopes of the Hirafu Village where the Niseko Ski Resort was located. For a while, we thought we were in some ski resorts in Europe as the staffs managing Niseko were mainly non-Japanese speaking. Even our lodge owner, Mr Mori spoke excellent English due to his many years of working experience in MNCs. After his retirement, he and his wife decided to move to Niseko and operate a lodge out of his home to welcome visitors from the world. Mr Mori had a wonderful dog, Muku. In no time, Muku became our new found friend, who would wag his tail everytime we passed by the entrance. Spending time with Muku certainly helped to alleviate some ... read more

23rd December 2008 ~ Tokyo to Hokkaido It took us about 6 hours by train from Tokyo to Hakodate. Starting at 8.56am, our day was almost gone when we finally reached Hakodate Station at 3pm in the afternoon. There were no major complains as the trains were clean and on schedule. Light snow greeted us as we marched out from the train station this afternoon which sent a smile on everybody’s faces. Afterall, it was not an everyday affair that we could see snow falling from the skies before our eyes. We managed to reach the Toyoko Inn Hotel at 3.40pm but was told to hang around in the lobby as the “standard check-in time was 4pm.” Armed with discount coupons which we tore from the train magazine, we managed to slice off yet another 1,000 ... read more

Travelling by bullet train (shinkansen) was a fast, efficient and comfortable experience, which began with us forming an orderly queue by our carriage number which was clearly marked on the platform where the train pulled in precisely to the mark and we boarded in an almost leisurely manner with everybody waiting patiently for their turn to get on and the train pulled gently away exactly on time. So far so not China! Refreshments were served by pretty Japanese girls wearing smart uniforms who bowed as they entered and exited each carriage - bowing is something else to get used to in Japan. Everyone bows ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ and it is quite infectious - you soon find yourself doing it involuntarily! The scenery whooshed by in a blur and we wondered how long the Trans-Sib would take ... read more

The highlight of Hakodate was going up the mountain at night to look at the lights. (We had arrived at night and were leaving the next morning so it was limited as to what to do!) Hakodate is beautiful because it is a peninsula and you can see around the bay on both sides from the mountain. It was a Saturday night and it was packed. Thousands of people were there. Buses and buses loads. We were umming and arring about getting on a packed bus to get down or wait 30 minutes til the next. When we did squeeze on we met up with Sohyon again! We knew she might be around but had not made a plan to meet up. This was Sohyon's 2nd last day in Japan and she was wanting to see ... read more

Toya Shikotsu National park Laurie: Shoko from Supporo drove us to Lake Shikotsu (about a 40 minute drive as she lives on the south side of Supporo) where we had lunch at a beautiful onsen on the shores of the lake. It was just what I was looking for. An onsen based on a natural hot spring with a rotemburo, an outdoor natural rock pool and it looked out over the lake. We spent a good hour there relaxing and preening. We stayed at the youth hostel that night where we had this amazing grilled dinner and we met a Japanese man who is an expert on pufferfish. The next day, Friday, was a disaster (relatively speaking). Pouring with rain so no go with a walk to the local mountain top. We were given the wrong ... read more

When we got to Sapporo we met up with our first Servas family. Servas is an international organisation to build links around the world by hosting travellers from other countries. We found Shoko through the list. She has 2 boys, 12 and 14 and they sounded interesting. We asked if they would host us in Sapporo. I was a bit worried about meeting up with them. I didn't know if we would get on and if the boys would get on. I didn't know how much English they had as Weixiong, Shoko's husband who was away in China had previously done the talking in the arrangements. It worked out fantastically! Shoko's English was great -- and we were able to have good conversations. She is very involved in the organic food movement; through the school and ... read more

Our first stop at Abashiri was to the Prison Museum. Strange isn't it, must be wondering why we want to vist a prison museum. Well this prison is as important to the town of Abashiri as Alcatraz is to the San Francisco. Had some fun here visiting all the places. We even ate some prison food for 500 yen...huh huh.. Highlight of the day (or our trip!) was our lunch ! We decided to try out Hokkaido's giant King Crab. This one was huge! Price was also huge but it was all worth it once we set our mouths on this delicacy. The crap was prepared in 3 different styes. First up was sashimi style where we sucked on the pomelo looking flesh for starters. The shells were collected for soup making. Next up we ... read more

Akan National Park. Our fist stop was one of the volcanic areas where yellowish sulphur can be seen spewing out from the vents. The area has a pungent smell with smoke emitting from the many vents. Strange but interesting piece of nature. Next stop was up to view the sights of Lake Mashu. Another pretty scenery which by now, we were pretty use to. Kinda make you want to visit hokkaido again in the winter to see how it is like. Visited a totally natural onsen in the evening located right beside the lake. Truly amazing place. Decided to visit it again the next morning. We had our dinner at one of the nearby Japanese style Izakaya, felt we wanted more and went next door for more sushi and more good food. Pretty much another ... read more
