A few weeks ago I had a few days off so I made the trek back to Eastern Hokkaido. Eastern Hokkaido has a lot to offer if you can see beyond the countryside. Mountains great for hiking and seeing wildlife and plants, drift ice, parks, great scenery and lookouts, onsens, amazing sunsets.... I arrived to Abashiri around 1 and was met by Mavi and Chris. Andy hadn't arrived yet, so we went back to Mavi's for some tea. Then when Andy arrived we went for lunch. Lunch turned out to be a mission! A lot of places were closing so we drove around and had the brilliant idea to take a helicopter ride after lunch! We ended up eating at a new soup curry place and some of Mavi's students were there and thought she was ... read more

Last Wednesday on the way to my taiko practice, my taiko sensei asked if I was busy for the weekend...I did have something planned during the day on Saturday, so I hesitantly said not really, why???? She then told me that there was a trip to Tokoro (eh??? Where's TOKORO???) to learn curling (what's curling???) and go snowmobiling (Yeah!!!). She also said the hotel and bath and bus was included. Ok, sounds like fun I'm thinking, but how much is this gonna break me... so I ask...FREE!!! Yes, that's right, FREE! Everything FREE.... Wow...and then she sais I can bring people. Not just one, or two or three, but 20 or 30 if I can round up that many people in 2 days time...So I made some calls. Sent some emails and managed to come up ... read more

This city even more remote than abashiri and 7 hours more to the nortth is japans most northern city. With coincidence i met a japanese guy with car who offered me a ride to th ecape soya, the most northern cape of japan. A little bit touristic, but a very nice scenery. The driver insisted to bring me back to wakkanai train station, about 40 km and i took the train to sapporo. In here i will stay the nigth before leaving to Nagano....yes the olympic village.... read more

I arrived quiet late due the lng train trip of 11 hours in this remote town. The area used to be a place for criminals from japan. In winter times it gets so cold that the sea freezes and changes into snow white plain of ice bergs. I got up the next day around 5 AM to experience the sunrise. As soon the sun hits the ice, the whole sea changed from a cold dark emptiness into a coloured shiny mess...amazing.... read more

Last year I made the trek up to Abashiri to see drift ice (from russia) and wasn't so lucky! On a few levels actually. Last year, I straight-away lost my SLR camera ice fishing on Abashiri lake. Long story...! and it was too windy to go out on the boats to see the drift ice. So this year I had high hopes of getting to see ice. One of my building mates went the weekend before and saw loads of ice, so I felt pretty confident it would happen this year. My co-worker Olivia decided to make the trek with me. There was a bit of drama involving me getting to the train and we just barely made it! The ride up there was pretty uneventful. We just chatted and slept. We pulled in to Abashiri ... read more

Since the Yuki Matsuri was going on there was no chance of getting a hostel in Sapporo so I made a call to a backpackers hostel in Otaru and scored us some bunks for the night. Otaru is about 30 minutes by express or 50 by local train from Sapporo. We had to be in the hostel by 9pm and we ended up getting into Otaru around 7:30pm but we had another mission, we were looking for another Snow Festival. While I was reading the Japan Times Online I found a travel article about the Sapporo festival and about a small festival in Otaru. The article described the Otaru festival as a much smaller and more local celebration than the huge sponsorship in Sapporo. It is so true! Otaru's festival is amazing. At night they light ... read more

What a weekend! So much happened and so many pictures were taken, well into 200 of them. I will do my best though! So On Saturday my co and I left Sendai at 11:30 on the sleeper train and headed into Hakodate. The sleeper train was pretty nice. You get your own little bunk in a small compartment of 4 bunks; 2 on top and 2 on bottom.I had a top bunk for both trips. The train gives you a really thick blanket, pillow, hanger, and yukata to sleep in. My co and I headed straight to bed and tried to sleep through the bumping and moving train. I got lucky and ended up sleeping for about 5 hours but my co wasn't as lucky. We arrived in Hakodate @ 6:30am on Sunday and headed straight ... read more

I woke up bright and early on Friday to set off for Satoland (the family fun area of the festival!) I thought I was so clever planning my trip when all the kids would be at school… what I didn’t realise is that every single school in Hokkaido would plan school trips there! So I had lots of kids coming up to me, keen to practise their English! (“I like cake, I like chocolate, I like ice cream…”) To start off with, I went down a really long snow slide whilst sitting in a rubber ring… a lot of fun! Then, I tried to find my way through a snow maze and eventually gave up and followed a 4 year old as I couldn’t find my own way out! I had some food there and watched ... read more
