Well actually it's just 6 hours away from Tokyo by the bullet train. The place is Hakodate, and it's one of the stops the train passes through from Sapporo to Tokyo. The route is really scenic, with a long stretch of the railway right by the ocean. Suddenly overcome with a desire to see the ocean and smell the salty breeze, (and to give my ass a break from the 10 hour train ride) I got off at Hakodate, a small port city known for... squid. Hakodate is really just a small port city, well known for fresh sea food, and their raw squid dish. Actually, to call it "raw" is an understatement. Right there in the morning market, not 10 minutes away from the Hakodate train station, I met my nemesis for the day. The ... read more

So, seeing as it keeps raining in Tokyo, I decided to go ahead with my plans to goto Hokkaido. Turns out that I basically only had 1 day and a half to spend in The Way to the Northern Ocean. So I decided that I will spend that day in Sapporo. Three things that I really care about from Hokkaido. 1) Their famous Ramen 2) Their famous beer 3) Their abundance of fresh sea food So on arrival, at 9PM, I checked into a Ryokan and quickly ran to the closest Ramen establishment. Actually it's called Ramen Republic, and it's basically a group of stalls representing some of the most famous Ramen restaurants in the city, and yes, it's in a mall. Speaking of malls... I've definitely got my share of malls in Japan. The Underground ... read more

Wow we have done a lot since our last post, and we've been off the grid so let's get to it! Sept 10th was overcast and rainy. Not too fun for our last day in Asahikawa, but a chance to try out our rain gear. We headed to the zoo and were AMAZED at the amount of people that would still go on a rainy day. A sea of umbrellas! A pretty good zoo, with lots of variety. We were very happy with our rain gear because after being out in the rain for more than four hours neither of us got wet underneath! After the zoo we tried the Asahikawa Ramen which was quite salty and made with alcohol. Very tasty! We explored a bit more of the town and that was it for the ... read more

After spending four nights in Sapporo at two different hostels, we rented a car and made our way to the first leg of our Hokkaido tour: central Hokkaido. driving is an adventure in itself. We are not used to driving on the left side of the road, and most of the signs are in Kanji. We are thrilled about our GPS however, as it speaks with an english voice. It's funny though because the text and all of the streets on the GPS are Kanji so we have no idea if we're going in the right direction! Every time the computer lady tells us to turn left, we turn left and so far she has not led us astray. We enter destinations via their phone number, so if we have a destination without a phone number ... read more

September 2nd - 3rd was the craziest travel day either of us has ever experienced. Woke up at 3 am, taxi to Vancouver airport, flight to San Francisco, 3 hour wait, flight to Tokyo, 3 hour wait, flight to Sapporo airport, train to Sapporo, subway to Hostel area, walk to Hostel. All of this took more than 25 hours so needless to say we were sleepwalking by the time we arrived. Unfortunately, the hostel hadn't received our reservations for a 3 night stay, but they did have a vacant room so we took it and were asleep before our tired heads hit the pillows. In the morning we called a different hostel and they had vacancies so we headed over there and booked in. Dormitory style only, and men and women sleep in different rooms. That's ... read more

It's just life. I am back in Sapporo and it all seems so natural. It doesn't seem so foreign, even after spending a month and a half back home. I keep going around thinking like I can communicate no problem, then everyone speaks Japanese. And I'm like "oh yeah that's how it is." It is raining, so who knows about the Beer Festival. I don't mind though. After eating some papaya and melon in it is time for a nap. It's great to run into what are now familiar faces and reconnect. I have discovered that I am no longer concerned or anxious about social dates and receiving texts. This year should be much more relaxed.... read more

Hmm… well its must be at least 7,8 months since I last updated this blog, no excuses really, just been really busy and living in a place with no internet connection which has been both a blessing and a curse at the same time. So I’ll try and update my movements since my last blog as briefly as I can, and then as usual, just leave it up to the pics to take care of the rest. - Last year Nov-Dec: finally made my way home to Aus, was great seeing everyone and getting my dose of proper sunshine, vegemite, woolworths and walking around bare foot without being looked at like a homeless bum (that’s a no-no in Japan).. - 06’07’ season: The snow fall this season was nothing compared to last season, which made ... read more

Five days after I arrived in Japan, I was ready to give my tender foot some R&R. Since Beijing I had little time or interest in ‘taking it easy.’ There were just too many fascinations to stay still. But now that I was in Japan I had reason to both stay off my feet and experience some authentic Japanese experiences. The 'Native' in this blog's title doesn't refer to 'going tribal.' No, I opted for a traditional Japanese lodging and traditional robes on the north island of Hokkaido. In Japan, the ‘onsen’ has a special role. Like the Turkish bath house or Thai massage, this is how the locals relax if they’re lucky. The ‘onsen’ are natural thermal baths dotted throughout the country. I suppose it is one of the few upsides to living on ... read more

Keep on Moving - A Final Kampai! was the name of the rockin joint farewell party for Leo, Maiko, Yara, Kako and myself to celebrate four plus years of friendship and adventures all over Sapporo and Japan. We had all decided that it was time to move on (Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia) and wanted to bring our extended group of friends together for a final kampai! Things kicked off around 1 in the morn with Rob V. playing a sweet accoustic set and he did a kick arse job considering he was the first man up. Volansky's voice was so powerful that a mic was not actually needed, but rain jackets or umbrellas could've helped those within ten feet of the stage - he really gets that saliva going ;-) From there Mario brought his Brazilian ... read more

Hey guys! Since I've now decided that I'm going to be overseas and away from you all for a while longer yet, I decided to start a blog so you can all keep up with where I'm at and what I'm doing. And so that I can use the same blog for when I do eventually start to travel, I thought a travel blog with all the extra added thingamybobs would be the way to go. And besides you could argue that I have already started my travels, I just decided to stop off here in Japan for a while on my way. (I also transported some of my blogs from my travels in Japan back in 2005 to keep them all together). 4 days left here in Niseko, and I have mixed feelings about it ... read more
