Kutchan is the closest little town to Niseko resort. We took the 15 minute bus to Kutchan to do some Nintendo Wii shopping and have some dinner of traditional Japanese BBQ, including some beef (which there isnt much of in Hokkaido, and its very expensive) and what they call "Gengis Khan", which is BBQ'd lamb and veges on you own little bbq. The restaurant was in a tiny little dark alley and was the "real Japan". The owers didnt speak any english but were very cute. They fetched us food and beer and watched japanese game shows on tv while we ate.... read more

Kiroro, Hokkaido (in the middle of mountains) HI everyone in Perth and the rest of the world. How are all my friends? Well I have finally broken the seal and joined the rest of those crazy (deranged) bloggers. So it has no been over two months since I left dear old (warm) Perth for a freezing winter wonderland (no internet access, not sure if it is really a wonderland). Quite contrary to what I had imagined, my body got use to the below zero temperatures wuite quick. Perth being 36 degrees when i left and being between -5 and -15 degrees over here. Not sure if my busy friends in Perth have time to watch the news or check how the weather is like where their beloved friend Yorma is (haha) but Japan, unlike last year ... read more

We spent the next four days all at Niseko Ski Resort, where it DID NOT STOP SNOWING for the whole time we were there except once on one afternoon when the sun peeped though. I took the chance to take as many photos as possible. In Japan, from Nov to April it snows like nowhere else in the world, probably because its a small island. Lots of cold air and snow comes down from Russia over the Sea of Japan. Japan is also known for its soft powder snow, which, although difficult to ski and turn on, is definitely the most fun to fall on! The mountain, called Annapuri, is huge. Due to the snowfall you hardly ever see the top of it, and we didnt, as it was always covered by clouds. There are 4 ... read more

Once we landed in Narita, the airport was so big that the plane had to park very far away. Then we had to WALK down the stairs out of the plane and onto the tarmac where buses picked us up and shuttled us to the main terminal. Japan Customs was very little fuss, and not much wait at all. Then we took a domestic flight to New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido. We met a Virgin Airline pilot on the plane from Brisbane who was travelling to the exact same ski resort to meet his friends, so we found our way together. We ate quick dinner of noodles before our 6:30 pm plane to New Chitose. Once in New Chitose it was starting to get very cold. We thought Narita was cold but in New Chitose there ... read more

Arrival Day We had an early flight from Hiroshima this morning. Bit of a hassle getting from our hotel, to the train station on the tram, then onto the bus to the airport, then checking in. We had been a bit concerned about the 15kg luggage limit - which we were well over - but noone seemed to care very much and check in went quite smoothly. Easy flight and got into Hokkaido about lunchtime to meet our Ski Japan rep. She had to meet a few more people so we had a bit of time to grab lunch and check out the airport - always exciting. The bus ride out to the village was a good 2.5 hours long but was actually quite a nice ride. The roads were good and it was just fantastic ... read more

The accommodation in Hakodate was great, the service was very good also and the amenities were brand new and clean as a whistle. I awoke in the middle of the night as the heater was on too hot only to find it was snowing and raining at the same time. The rain was melting the snow which was disappointing but still great to see snow none the less. After I showered the hostess was kind enough to give me some sweets and a can of coffee for my journey. Upon leaving Hakodate no more than 5 minutes into the trip we entered tons of snow fields, it appeared to be new snow but only a fairly light covering. After leaving Sapporo station I set out to find accommodation and the cheapest place I could find was ... read more

Back in Japan for the second time this year. Its good to be back! Stopped off in Taiwan on the way for one night, didn't really like it there. I had forgotten how friendly and crazy the Japanese people are. I'v got a job here working at the same place i stayed at last year. The people who run the place are so nice, they have me calling them Ozesun (uncle) and Obasun (aunt). Obasun is an amazing cook, we staff eat what they eat and they eat really good, i could write pages and pages about the cooking alone but i'll just let you take my word for it. I work 4 hours a day just moving snow with this thing thats a cross between a tank and a lawnmower, i also pick people up ... read more

Fourteenth and Fifteenth Weeks - Dec. 2 - 15 Dec. 2: The whole family went to an Onsen again this afternoon. It’s the same one that we went to last week. It was a lot of fun. It was also snowing today and is supposed to snow all week long. I’m excited for it. Some of my friends are going skiing on Sunday. I decided not to since I’ve only skied twice and don’t want to risk breaking something three weeks before I fly home. For those of you who don’t know, I will be leaving Japan and arriving at home on Christmas Day. I can’t wait! It’ll be exciting to have two Christmas Days in one year in two different countries. Dec. 8: Hi-C had a farewell party for all the foreign exchange students. It ... read more

I can't believe I've been here in Japan for exactly four months now. I can't believe I haven't written anything about it! Perhaps because there are far too many stories to tell. Practically everyday something happens here. And the weekends? Oh my god. I can't even begin to describe them. Last Friday I was out until 6am. The next night I was out until 10am! I am constantly meeting new people. Here in Sapporo I know pretty much all the bartenders, gaijin, and many Japanese girls. This city is very small so you get to know everywhere and everyone pretty quick. I can go out by myself anytime and can be pretty much guarenteed to run into someone I know to hangout with. My keitai, cellphone, is bulging with phone numbers and memories of crazy nights ... read more

Tenth and Eleventh Weeks Nov. 4-17 Nov. 4: Loreli, Kelsey, Rowena and I watched a movie and made Chocolate Chip Banana Bread at my house. I think I may be the only exchange student whose host family has an actually oven to bake in. Everyone else only has a fish oven, which is only big enough to fit about two fish. That’s something to note, most of the baked goods that people eat come from one of the several bakeries around the city. Nov. 6: Mama and her cousin and I went to the Ishiya Chocolate Factory, and Hokkaido University. At Hokkaido University we got to see the Poplars which are famous for there fall leaves. They were beautiful. My pictures don’t do justice for their bright color. We also went to Ishiya Chocolate Factory. While ... read more
