This morning I ran 3 miles around Odori Park and then Camden and I had breakfast at the hotel (rice balls again, good thing I like rice=) Our 1st stop was the clock tower and it's museum. The clock was made in Boston, MA and was shipped over to the town of Sapporo for the Hokkaido Agriculture College. Next, we walked through the Botanic Gardens which is also a part of the College. The gardens in Japan are absolutely beautiful!!! After walking more than 7 miles on our tour of the city, we finally arrived at the Sapporo Beer Museum and had the pleasure of sampling the freshest beer either of us had ever tasted. We had dinner back at the hotel, free of charge, which consisted of rice and some kind of sauce and ... read more

A day in Sapporo, Japan. We are in the northern area of Japan in the region of Hokkaido today. Tour of Shadai Farms: We had a breakfast of rice balls and miso soup, a baguette and green tea. We took the express train to Shadai Farms and were able to view 3 of the mares and their foals, next we went to the stallion station to view the three sires of the foals we saw: Fuji Kiseki, Deep Impact, Agnes Tachyon. We were also able to view War Emblem. Shadai Farms has 3 horses in the upcoming Japan Derby: Reach the Crown, Request Song, and Golden Ticket. The Japan Derby is going to be held on May 31st of this year, which is also our 1st wedding anniversary so maybe it will bring them luck. ... read more

Just returned from Japan's nothernmost island - Hokkaido. It was a bit chilly, but beautiful, with one of the most charming towns I've seen, Otaru. Host fam planned this one so as usual, we did lots of running around, hitting 3 different cities in a span of four days. Plans included a beer factory, a crazy resort, a zoo, lavender farm, and then Otaru. Before getting into the details, the event was Golden Week, a long weekend, and in Waseda's case, a week long vacation created by some random national holidays thrown together. Maybe, at some point, the holidays had meaning, but now I really think that the only reason they are around is so Japanese can travel and spend money on souvenirs, hence stimulating the economy. The travel weekends of the Japanese must do the ... read more

Hokkaido is a special region in Japan due to its remoteness as island and harsh Siberian climate. It has a fascination due to its unspoiled and very wild national parks in summer and as a secure skiing destination for Korean, Taiwanese and Australian people in winter. Yuki developed some skills in finding cheap package trips. When she found a very reasonable priced package trip to Hokkaido, the place for our Christmas holidays was clear. We flew on the 23rd from Tokyo to Sapporo - the provincial capital of Hokkaido. Sapporo was cold with temperatures below freezing and plenty of ice on the street. Somehow nobody bothers and it is a big sliding on the crossings in the town. Some mini crampons are on sale in 24h shops, but we never saw somebody using them. We strolled ... read more

Went to Sapporo, Hokkaido from Saturday until today. It was really fun, and not as cold as people say, but I am from Minnesota and I KNOW what cold is. The coldest was -3 degrees Celsius? I forgot, it wasn't that bad cause it wasn't so windy! Anyhow....run down of events. Saturday: arrive, find our hotel after Rach leads us to the wrong place because she read the map wrong and thought the hotel was in another place, meet with my friend Ranee (who is now teaching in Sapporo) and her husband Jay (we didn't get a picture together...zannen!), we walked a bit down Odori Park where all the snow sculptures are, but at 10pm the lights were shut off so we couldn't see much so we went back to the hotel. Sunday: free breakfast at ... read more

Who doesn’t love festivals? Seriously, you’d have to be quite a grinch not to. I love festivals. The fun, food, events and (in this case) giant snow sculptures the size of buildings. Yuki Matsuri or better known in the western world as the Sapporo Snow Festival is an event of international caliber. Over 2 million tourists flock to this frozen northern Japanese city from February 5 through 11 every year. When I moved to Japan I decided at one point I would be one of those 2 million + tourists. We all flew to Sapporo on Sunday, Alexa, Lauren, Katie, Simon and I. As the plane taxied onto the runway it was obvious that this was definitely a snowy city. Outside the airport, outside the train and on our walk to the hotel snow was falling ... read more

We couldn't make it home for Christmas, so we did the next best thing; we headed north to Hokkaido. Hokkaido is an island that trains don't run to, so we had to take a flight. While the flight was uneventful, we still had a 2.5 hour bus ride to get to Niseko. Mo and I arranged a bus ride a couple of months in advance. What we didn't arrange was a private bus, but that's exactly what we had; a full tour bus all to our own. It must have cost the company that provided it $300 to drive us individually up the mountain for 2.5 hours, but the Japanese like to keep a schedule, so two of us or a hundred, they were driving that bus up the mountain. While we didn't need a ... read more
