We managed to find a snowboarding deal at the travel agent in Noichi, where some of them even speak English! We got return flights from Kochi to Chitose, return bus transfer to hotel, 6 nights in a business hotel (with breakfast), 2 lunches, equipment rental, and a 6 day lift pass for all mountains (including night ski) - all for JPY88,000 each, which is about £600. So all that leaves is 4 lunches, 6 dinners, and the ever compulsory omiyage. Monday We left home at 06:35, 5 minutes later than planned. But my landlady’s husband (who incidentally is the spitting image of Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid) drove us to the airport, and he seemed to enjoy speed, so we got there in good time. At the check-in counter, we were told to go to ... read more

A ski trip to Niseko seemed the perfect way to end my 2months of working in Perth's 35+ degree weather, after just hearing by word of mouth how good the snow was there I booked my flights and accomodation in about august and didnt really think twice about it till about a week before i left. I arrived in Sapporo late tuesday afternoon and caught the bus up to Hirafu, when i arrived in Hirafu it was about -20 and i was just wearing my trackies and a jumper. The kind staff at the welcome centre called the backpackers and they came and picked me up, which worked really well. After a good nights sleep, i woke to about 20cm of fresh powder, the lady at the reception had told me that they knew of somebody ... read more

Ahhhh when I think of Sapporo the beer always brings back good memories! I spent three days in Sapporo in a nice little business hotel which provided everything one could need included a WICKED free breakfast!! Having arrived late on the first day on the 9th Feb, we ventured into Sapporo to discover the first site for the Ice Festival. There were three sites in total consisting of various ice sculptures which looked different in the day compared to the night! Temperatures were well below freezing but we also seeked refuge in underground shopping streets or 7/11 stores! After dinner, we hit the sack as the first day was going to be a belter! Having seen two of the sites already, we decided to hit the Sapporo beer museum and one of the many sake museums, ... read more

As mentioned previously, breakfast was illegally early and to make matters worse, the culprit was late. I shared the joke with my new Japanese best friend across our mugs of hot milk, proving once again that some jokes really are universal. Today's chopstick challenge was a fried egg, which despite first thoughts, oddly turned out to be easy once you twigged where to start. Mr Fiennes even went so far as to put his yolk on his toast but I considered this way too risky that early in the morning. The weather had improved immensely, although a light midnight flurry of snow had dusted the scene. Weirdly, the snow looked like tiny white sugar balls ready to sprinkle on your donut. I didn't have time to try this out though as with clear skies, we ventured ... read more

I've been in the resort for about a week now, and we've had over a metre of fresh snow so far, and it's snowing very lightly as I write this. We were all moved into one house together - the skiers and the snowboarders, and it just so happens to be brand new, and very plush! It's a bit of a hike from the slopes, mind, but we can slide across the carparks on the way back at least. The town has 5 onsens - thermal baths, (need to explore these) and the resort is actually down the side of a volcano; i'm not sure if it's extinct or not! This explains the baths, and the horrendous smells at various points on the slopes! There's a spectacular volcano opposite, too, looking for all the world like ... read more

Day one dawned, and after wishing the aussies in the lodge a good day I was whisked away to meet the rest for avalanche training. Despite the jetlag I took copious notes, and then it was time for the transeiver hunt. It's deceptively difficult, and on flat ground it was taking us at least 5 minutes to find the box; that's pretty frightening as 93% of people don't survive beyond 15 minutes, and we'd still have to get to the avalanche site in the real thing! In the afternoon we headed up the mountain to go digging.. We were each given a shovel and told to dig a vertical face in the snow so that we could check the layers, and distinguish the good and bad types of snow. It was about this time that a ... read more

Flying out of the states was a whole lot easier than flying in, but everyone still has to take their shoes off, without exception. I'd allowed 3 hours, and I was at the gate in 20 minutes. Oh well! The 12 hour flight seemed shorter than that, even allowing for a couple of hours kip. On the way in the captain spoke over the pa to tell us there was a good view of mount Fuji, and sure enough, there it was, rising from the haze and completely dominating the landscape; you can see why it's so important to the Japanese. On landing my snowboard was almost on the carousel before I got there! Had to wait for my backpack, mind, and I started to remember why I like Japan so much; it's the little quirks. ... read more

I was rudely awakened by an early alarm clock at 6.30am - far too early an alarm for a holiday don't you think? However, I could also hear what I hoped were fresh coffee beans being ground so with my hopes high, we went for breakfast. Not only did we get fresh coffee but also 6 kinds of homemade jam, some from native wild fruit. Of course, Mr Matsuo and I, then got into an in depth chat about 'stuff what I have grown and made into jam' which I guess delayed breakfast a little but certainly not to it's detriment. It appears I need to move on from jam and into liqueurs. We also got into an international conversation which I shall entitle 'I remember when this was all fields' which we could understand even ... read more

Following some recent comments on my poor spelling, I would like to offer my sincere apologies if this has effected your reading pleasure. I will endeavor to try harder and blame all my errors on the telepathic influence of my mother. We awoke to a white world of snow in Chitose with enormous 6 foot high piles of ploughed up snow lining the streets. We figured we needed to make as early a start as possible on the drive to our lodgings in Nemuro (up the coast from Kushiro), so after a hearty breakfast, we caught the train back to the airport to arrange some replacement car hire.  Unlike the UK, things here do not seize up and stop when it snows (except the odd flight, of course) so all the trains were still running perfectly on time. Clothing-wise, ... read more

We made a fairly early start as we had seats on the 9.30am bullet train back to Tokyo so we grabbed a few edible supplies at the station (pringles, macadamia nuts with crunchy cheese, and some green beans that tasted like mushy peas) and hopped aboard). The journey was uneventful which is how I like them and Mark managed to grab some better pictures of Mt Fuji. The lack of events ended once we arrived at the airport however. The departure board displayed our flight to Kushiro in Hokkaido as 'check-in unavailable at this time' and several other flights on the board either delayed or subject to weather conditions. Tokyo was sunny but our flight was eventually cancelled due to the huge piles of snow at Kushiro airport.  We took the decision to transfer our flight ... read more
