We arrived in Hakodate with no problem. Weather forecast said rain the next day. That night we decided to scout out the area, and were able to determine that we were close to all the sights necessary for our visit. Old Hexagonal fort shaped in a star formation, The morning fish market, and the tower. We also wanted to go up top the mountain but it was to dark. We found a little out of the way sashimi mom and pop restaurant and ordered our favorite dishes while watching Sumo Wrestling on TV. We watched the chef finesse with the knife and deliver us the bouquet of freshness to our loving lips!!! MMMMMMMMMM Goood!!!! We bowed our way out of the restaurant and headed back to the hotel. The wife wanted to eat Salt ramen noodles ... read more

Wednesday-Day Five I got up at 9am to do TaiChi on the basketball court on deck 13, Martin is not a well boy and slept on after his big gambling night. We are sailing to Sapporo today and will get there at 4pm. Its overcast and I can actually feel some motion underneath me. Today I shared a breakfast table with a German couple. There are so many nationalities on board, the largest group being Australians and also large groups from Korea, Singapore, and HongKong. But we have met people from Lithuania, Armenia, Holland, Brazil, England, China, Japan, Spain, USA, Thailand, France. This is the fifth day on the ship and only today did I discover Cafe Promenade on the fifth floor, part of what I call the main street. I knew that you ... read more

Hokkaido Summary Two weeks in Hokkaido, Japan, is not enough. We set off in Furano, which is just left of the centre of the island and worked our way around the mountains to the far NE corner. Obviously, we only scratched the surface of the province and I am amazed at how big Japan is. The country is very prosperous and up to date with almost everything being available. The cars and lorries are in good condition, as are the houses. There are a few poor looking houses, and a few derelict ones, but most I would say, are no more than 40 yrs old. You could call the NE area the land of the loading shovel and fork lift truck since they are found everywhere, no doubt also in abundance to deal with the winter snow, ... read more

Day 14 Iwaobetsu to Abashiri. Simple buffet breakfast with soup, toast, cold noodles in mayonnaise, yoghurt and a few unknowns. Sunny and high 20's again - not complaining. Out of the door and straight up the hill for 2 miles at 7%. This was followed by a descent back to the coast, which we followed for 20 miles. The first town of Utoro was very nice with a fishing harbour and large brown rocks standing in the sea near the coast. It reminded me of the East coast at Scarborough and Whitby. Along the way there were also some quite good waterfalls streaming down into the sea, one spectacular one called Oshin Koshin. Cormorants were also seen basking on rocks close by and waiting for a bite to eat. I managed to get quite a good ... read more

A steep 10 mile climb out of Rausu first thing today from the word go with no warm up. Straight to 7% with 11% in places. My legs did not want to work. It was a surprise to see large pockets of snow on the slopes at 500m in a temperature of 25 deg C. and just goes to show what a harsh winter they must have. Our guide Ken left the van at the top and cycled down to meet us and with a fresh pair of legs showed us how to fly up the last 2km. Coffee and bananas etc at the top and we felt better. Ken cannot prepare the food fast enough for us - it is like feeding gannets. It is a good thing he is a very sociable friendly person ... read more

Day 12 Rausu Hot again this morning with blue sky and a need for serious sun cream application. 32 degrees C on the road with a little breeze. Reasonably flat run but still climbed 490 m in 72 miles and burnt 1,200 calories. As we headed East towards the coast a mist settled in which felt like drizzle at one point. At 11.30 the sun came out again and the temperature back up to 30 as we followed the coast North to our destination of Rausu, which is as far as the continuous road goes. The coast is full of fishing villages and kelp farmers, who leave large nets out at sea for the kelp to attach to then winch them in. We decided to go another 15 miles up the coast to the end of ... read more

Day 11 Nakashibetsu Last night after dinner was an hour of karioki and most of the group joined in and had some fun singing Tom Jones and Abba etc. We were warned to keep the windows closed at night when the lights are on since there are small bugs that will even get through the mesh screens. When we finished ("singing"?) the picture window was smothered in the blighters. See photo. Our Japanese friends in the next room kept us awake with their jabbering until well after 11pm and awoke us at 5.30am with more of the same. The lake was covered in mist at breakfast with herons gliding low over the water. Upon collecting our bikes Joy found a very small pale green frog on her saddle - cute. As we set off the sun ... read more

Abashiri to Lake Kussahoro. The forecast for today was correct. 6am was brilliant sunshine which turned to rain by 7 and visibility down to 200m. Is it to be sun cream or goose grease today? Everyone is ready to go and get it over with, although it is warmer than Lancashire rain - I hope. Since no one wants to mess with maps in the rain we all follow Peter, who has Ken's Garmin loaded with the route. It is a miserable start on busy roads with tramlines holding loads of water, which we threw up at ourselves with our mudguardless bikes or the traffic threw it at us from the side. None of these was nice. The rain eased off slightly as the morning wore on and it was acceptable, even when we hid under ... read more

Day 9 Abashiri My it is hot here in Abashiri Town and with the fan on low to keep the noise down we slept badly and at 5.30 I got up to try the Notebook on WiFi before anyone else was on but still it would not work. This means doing this blog on my phone and no photos yet. Most of us chose an educational morning with a visit to the Museum of the People's of the North. This traced many of the Inuits that survived in the North such as Alaska, Russia, Norway etc. It was a very interesting visit tracing their customs, way of life, their food sources, the clothing they made and the tools and equipment produced from available materials such as bone and wood. One interesting fact was their use of ... read more

Shiobetsu to Lake Saroma Day 7. Sunday. Not as far to go today with just 42 miles and a paltry climb of 200m to Lake Saroma near the coast, which is the largest lake in Hokkaido, producing a large array of fish; oyster, scallops and shrimp etc. Not fish again for tea. The lake is actually salt water since it has a narrow channel out to sea and has a fishing harbour with scores of boats in regular use. The ride was a slight downhill for the first 10 miles and luckily without those bad joints across the road, every 20 metres, which we had on the hills the past few days. We passed many farms, both arable and dairy, which appeared quite prosperous with newish buildings, tractors and equipment. One dairy farm had about 50 ... read more
