I日本は韓国でない! Where were our Korean friends when we got to Japan?!? We weren't lucky enough that they were able to come with us. We weren't lucky enough that everything was in Japanese, and none of us could speak more than a few words we'd learned in preparation. But what am I giving luck a hard time for? Luck is good 'cause it makes things easy. We got off that 3-hour ship from one country to the other, no problems, got through customs, no problems... The guard just dug deep enough through my suitcase to pull out the Japanese tea I had received as a gift. But I just smoked it with the customs guard and we parted with a merry AraH-GaHt-Oh!* We gotta get somewhere, so we hopped on a bus. I was pretty sure what ... read more

Fortunately, the city has two names, so we'll stick to "Hakata", which is less potentially Fukuokan offensive.) When heat and humidity combine, I tend to resemble Tony Hart's plastecine pal Morph, who would degenerate into a pubble periodically. Profuse perspiration is a genetic flaw of the Osmotherly clan, so I blame my Dad. Thus when I "nipped out" into this morning's unforecast sweltering sunshine to have a gander at cloudless Sakurajima I returned a tad sodden. Fortunately, the heroic Mr N... read more

3: At Mark and Aiko's Asia » Japan » Kyushu » Fukuoka By BekkiJuly 1st 2007Fukuoka I met Mark in my Japanese evening class in London. Whilst I was learning Japanese just for fun he was learning it because he and his Japanese wife were planning to live in Japan. So here he is in Fukuoka, Kyushu, with their 3 month old baby Joshua. Whilst visiting them I took the opportunity to visit this city. It doesn't get a great write up in my guide book but in fact I rather enjoyed myself. Bizarrely, the thing that my guide book particularly recommended I found pretty dire; Canal City. I've put a photo of... read more

So this is version 2 of my long blog of random thoughts and notes I've been jotting down for the past two weeks. Version one just suffered an unholy demise at the accidently pressing of Gmail's inconvienently placed discard button! Anyway I know this one is long, but I think you'll have fun reading it. I even have subheadings, how many emails can claim that? Ok here it goes: Random Question: To preface this, let me bring everyone up to speed on the state of Korean Television. First of all there are about 6 channels total that play English Language shows/movies as well as CNN international. Koreans love CSI, CSI MIAMI, NCIS and pretty much every other cop drama ever devised. Their movie channels have a plethora of Bruce Willis films and they generally love action ... read more

This week, I'm in Fukuoka! It's haru yasumi (spring vacation) at school so I took the chance to get out of Tottori and go to a new place. I'm taking Japanese conversation and beginner classes at Genki Japanese and Culture School (Genki JACs for short). This city is great, I think it may be my favorite city in Japan. The weather right now is sooo nice, it reminds me of the Bay Area actually so if feels familiar to me. The city itself isn't that big, but there's a lot to see and it's also pretty easy to navigate. I'm doing the apartment share so I am staying in an apartment with a Japanese family. They are unique though because the father is a foreigner (American) and his wife is Japanese and they have two little ... read more

I had to go to Fukuoka, Japan to get a work permit to teach in Korea. I didn't mind since it was a country that I have not been too, and the school paid for the trip. Not so bad! Actually it is fantastic, (my passport has one page left in it). I found out the night before I left that another teacher would be traveling with me to Fukuoka. Michelle started working for the school one week before. She has come straight from Portland to teach at the school. I didn't mind the company and she was relieved not to travel alone, she is not use to being in a foreign country. So I woke up at four in the morning to get to the airport early. When I woke I realized that I ... read more

We went down to Fukuoka (on Kyushu, the bottom island) to catch up with Shino for the public holiday. She took us to the Tochoji Temple (with pictures of 12 different hells and a scary tunnel where you are supposed to rely on Buddha to guide you out), Hakata Michiya Folk Museum and Kushida Shrine. At a place by the museum you could see how the obi part of kimonos were made on these hard-out wooden machines and the people working them let us have a go. The Shrine still had the remnants of the Setsuban festival, and also a big float that gets carried around once a year when men representing different districts race in loincloths!... read more

WARNING: The following contains language not suitable for younger audiences. Discretion is strongly advised. Ever have one of those moments that stop you dead in your tracks? Where you freeze and think "Did that really happen?". So there you are, sitting in the cheap seats drinking beer, discussing the sound made when a hand smacks a fat guys bare ass, when suddenly 'it' happens. There is no warning, no time to react. From behind you comes a stunted cough followed by moist projectiles of partially chewed food landing in your hair and all over your back and neck, with the largest offending piece coming to rest on your spouse's thigh, its flight path marked by a trail of saliva. What. The. Fuck?! Your hand reaches back to inspect the bits clinging to your hair, and you ... read more

The more time that passes, the more I realize just how much I experienced during my first year in Hiroshima. This past weekend Casey and I brought a group of 26 English teachers down to the southern island of Kyushu to watch sumo and visit a theme park called Spaceworld. This trip marked our third time watching sumo, which is really something you only need to do once... but is always a great excuse to get together with friends and enjoy a few drinks while watching very big men in diaper-like cloths! Always a great time! At 10am on Saturday morning we climbed into our rented bus and headed down to Kyushu. Apart from the continual pirate jokes (everything with "-ar" just had to turn into "-arghhhhh!"), the 4.5 hour ride down was pretty uneventful, ... read more
