Oh well, this is my last day in Japan. It has just started snowing(yes, it can snow in Asia.....) and I'm still walking around in flip-flops- spot the foreigner!!!!) Fukuoka is a nice place and after being here for 1 month in this city it is certainly time to move on. The language learning at the local private school was intense but enjoyable. The highlights of being in this city is going to see fat men frisk each other in public (ie. The international Sumo tournament) and going to a restuarant where you can fish your food from a over-elaborate aquarium....Overall, Osaka still remains my favourite city and this is all down to the cracking night life and the friendliness of the locals. Next stop Hong Kong... ... read more

The one word that would best describe my weekend in Fukuoka is "adventure"! We started out on Friday night catching a bus from Hiroshima Bus Center and going to our first destination, a city about 3.5 hours south of here called Shimonaseki. One of the benefits of being in JET Programme is that everyone seems to fall under the same category: wanting to travel, but also wanting to save money... so, it works out well that there are JETs in just about every major city, and if you network well enough you will always have a free place to stay! So, Friday night Casey, Julie, Simon, Mercedez and I stayed at our friend Sterling's place... even though he was away for the weekend. It was really cool of him to leave his apartment open for ... read more

So when you think about Japan there are many things you associate with it....sushi, kimonos, karate, and of course SUMO!!!! I was fortunate enough to get to experience a sumo wrestling tournament this weekend. It succeeded my expectations. I had such a good time and would definitely go to another sumo match in the future if I was given the chance. Originally we were supposed to go with the AJET group, but things fell through. That did no stop us from going. There were 9 of us in our crew headed to the tournament, me, Lisa, Nikki, Marc, Mercedez, Jen, Ellie, Julie, and Simon. The weekend started out a little chaotic. I was running late and thought I was going to miss the bus to Shimonoseki. As I am running in the direction of the bus, ... read more

For my four-day weekend I decided to take off down to Kyushu. The original intention was to hike some more (possibly Aso-san, the largest caldera in the world) and meet up with my friend Jonathan. It quickly involved meeting up with many other people and turning into a fabulous trip...although I think I needed another vacation after!!! It included, hiking, shrines, boat cruises, drinking, dancing, street performers, hitching, a baseball game, and complete chaos....just the way I like it. Those random trips are the best. I hit up Shimonoseki and had some incredible sushi. Then I headed down to Fukuoka to get lost amongst the shopping malls with the clothes I could not afford and meander along until I found some cool shrines to check out. I did see the largest wooden buddha in Japan. Looks ... read more

Well today was definitely more relaxing. Like I said yesterday I went to the big shopping centre here in the city today and it was unreal, you should have seen it! I slept in which was a good start to a relaxing day, just what I needed and had a late breakfast then took my time getting ready to go out, it was nice to do that for a change because I'm usually rushing around packing everything in my bag before check-out time or I have an early train or bus to catch or I want to make the most of the day so I don't want to start too late. But today I knew that I would have plenty of time to see what I wanted so I could take my time. So, this shopping ... read more

Well today was interesting I can say that much! No really it was jam-packed and very good. I woke up early to make the most of my day, indulged in the free breakfast once again and set out for the day. It was still too early to go to any of the attractions so I went to a big park in the centre of the city called Ohori Park first. It has a big lake in the middle and a bridge that connects both sides through the middle and also a walking path around the whole park. It was very pretty, a really nice way to start the day, it was yet another beautiful day in Japan, it was windy so even though it's still hot it's survivable. The park has a running track around the ... read more

I'm now in Fukuoka, I'm sure you've all at least heard of Fukuoka, they held the world swimming championships here a few years ago, I remember they showed all the swimmers eating ramen (noodles) at some of the restaurants on the TV. But before I start with Fukuoka let's get back to Kitakyushu or Kokura, whichever you want to call it. After a quick breakfast I deposited my backpack in a locker for the day, I swear the train station lockers are going to make so much money out of me during this trip! Anyway, the main reason for going to Kokura was to shop! I had heard that if you want to go shopping in Kyushu then Kokura is THE place to go, so thats exactly what I did. I did visit a few attractions ... read more

I was all prepared to write about life in school, but I took a rather interesting trip this weekend so I figured I would write about that instead. This time I went to Fukuoka city on Kyushu island, one of the major culinary and entertainment capitals of Japan. Since the distance from Tamagawa was rather substantial, my friend and I decided to take Japan’s world famous bullet train, the fastest train in the world. It can reach speeds of 180 mph, and amazingly there has never been a fatality in more than thirty years. The trip would have taken two and a half hours by conventional transportation, but instead took a mere 45 minutes. By the time I remembered to look at the window to see how fast we were going, we were practically there. There ... read more
