I recently left my job, sold my car, dropped my cell phone, and moved to Phuket, Thailand to attend TEFL school. I hope to be in southeast Asia for at least a year, traveling and working, starting my new life adventure.

I want to start blogging again, I have missed it. I still live in Malaysia and will be here another year. I am enjoying it, especially that I live so close to other countries. And here are some photos when I first arrived in Malaysia. I will update with recent photos soon. ... read more

Oh Korea, My time in Korea is done, and it has been a long last month and a half. Difficult is to say the very least. To make a long story short…. things have turned in direction which has made my choice to leave very easy. I was moved to an apartment, thinking it would be better because the utilities wouldn’t be so high. Evidently, was my expectations were too high. My new apartment was definitely unique. I had to leave my shoebox of a room and go in to square corridor to enter my long tunnel of a bathroom. Even more pleasant my bathroom wasn’t heated and exposed to outside air for ventilation…but its only February! And to add to the fun and games of my living situation, there was dial that controls the hot ... read more

December 11th 2007

I have been gone officially now from the USA for over a year. What can I say? Well, in one years time I have been to eight different countries and have been living in Korea for almost one year. I think back on this year and can’t believe what I have experienced. At first I thought I was going to live in Thailand and that was not the case, realizing that money was too much of an issue. So I figured I would travel some before heading to Korea. On and off buses and trains…I traveled Southeast Asia. Seeing each country’s uniqueness and meeting people from all over the world. I have met some incredible people who continue to be good friends. I have seen amazing things as well as horrific ones. I have experienced fear ... read more

I went to China with a friend from Korea, Chris. He is someone that I met through Darren whom I traveled with in Vietnam. Chris and I arrived in Beijing after slight detour. Our 2 1/2 hour fight turned into 4 1/2 hours because we landed in another part of China for no apparent reason. The fight attendants did not explain what was happening. We waited in a city called Dailian for about an hour and were off again. After arrival to a very chaotic airport, we figured out the bus we needed to take and were off to the heart of the city. Dropped off at a bus stop, we decided to take a cab to the hotel, easy right...wrong. We got a taxi, put all our stuff in the trunk and I was telling ... read more

Learning Korea Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Seoul By aquamaggie May 27th 2007 MaggieHere are some pics of my life in the past months. I am learning Korea, but realizing how much I don't understand. I may learn areas or part of the language but the gap is great. It's humbling! I think I start to understand and then I see a man in a shinny silver suit w/pink (its reflective) or something and realize, its not my culture. Shinny suits are often seen on Sundays. And this is one of many observations. I guess I will say it, it is something one must experience. MUCH LOVE and more to come... ... read more

March 21st 2007

I had to go to Fukuoka, Japan to get a work permit to teach in Korea. I didn't mind since it was a country that I have not been too, and the school paid for the trip. Not so bad! Actually it is fantastic, (my passport has one page left in it). I found out the night before I left that another teacher would be traveling with me to Fukuoka. Michelle started working for the school one week before. She has come straight from Portland to teach at the school. I didn't mind the company and she was relieved not to travel alone, she is not use to being in a foreign country. So I woke up at four in the morning to get to the airport early. When I woke I realized that I ... read more

I have been here over a month, and it has been an adventure. Teaching can be demanding, I feel as I constantly performing for an audience. I have lost my voice a couple of times. For my kindergarten kids its a balance between teaching the kids how to behave and teaching them english. They want to play games all the time and it can be very difficult to keep them focused, especially brian and louis. When we work on math or other types of worksheets, they often just copy their neighbor. It more important to them to finish then it is for them to understand the material. This is a battle for me, I try to stop the copying, and have everyone listen to me so they will understand the material. I use the board as ... read more

Who's idea was it to move here....Oh yea, it was mine. It was rough in the beginning, but I have accomplished a lot since my first week. I went on two interviews. Both schools really wanted to hire me. They love Americans and women, so I was in high demand. My email was overrun with requests for interviews. I didn't go on many because I really liked the first school I visited (kid's college). At this school, I would teach a wide range of classes, like math (my favorite), computers, gym, science..etc. And the salary was bigger then other schools as well. Typically, schools have the native English teacher just teach English classes and to many children. So, I took the job at Kid's college. And when I told my agent that I would take the ... read more

February 1st 2007

I arrived in Korea early in the morning. I didn't even remember the flight, since it left at 2:00 in morning and I slept the whole way. Airline travel seems so easy now, and quick. I have become accustom to long journeys on trains or buses, where time seems never ending. So, I arrive and collected all my belongings with a new added bag (I had a huge duffle bag stored in the Bangkok airport), not so easy anymore. I was still half a sleep and became a target for tourist trap. It is very hard to travel on your own, when you are tired. A taxi man just grabbed my stuff and took it to his taxi and we were off. I had no energy to fight or question. I randomly choose a hotel from ... read more

Traveling back to Thailand (Bangkok) on a over night train was smooth and easy. I definitely like trains much better than buses. I even had soft bed to sleep on, and made some friends at the train station. I has been awhile and I can't remember their names anymore. One was french and hard to understand, be we had fun in the dining cart, mostly laughing at the Thai man dancing to American music. His moves were a mixture of spins pounding the air with his arms. I spent the next few days pounding the pavement in Bangkok. I bought my ticket for Korea on the 31st of January. I enjoyed my last days of warm weather and smiling Thais, and even made some Thai friends who rode to the airport with me.... read more
