Background: In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Orientation Asia » Japan » Chiba
Hello everyone! Today is our second day of Orientaion, my third day here in Japan. In theory we're all getting to know each other and getting ready for our schooling and such. I've kinda missed out on a great deal of that. Why is that? Well, I've been getting a bit more aquainted with being sick. The good news is that Japanese people are very nice, so they let me skip the lectures to pass out in my room, and later a couple of strangers found me in the fifth floor bathroom with a nose bleed and kindly went to find [View Full Entry]

Narita stopover Asia » Japan » Chiba
I had an 18 hr overnight layover at Narita on my way to Xian; my plan was to go visit the nearby Narita temple. Arriving at Narita, the line through immigration was very long. After waiting for 15 minutes one of the agents said the other side was open, and there was no wait at all. I had found a good rate at the nearby Holiday Inn which is very close to the terminal. I had just missed the last shuttle by mere minutes and had to wait 30 minutes for the next one (I could have walked it, it turns [View Full Entry]

Journee relax a Narita Asia » Japan » Chiba » Narita
On [View Full Entry]

Just arrived Asia » Japan » Chiba » Narita
Hello everybody. Finally here!!! Japanese keyboards are the hardest things in the world to work, so you will have to bear with me while I try to type properly. I only have 7 minutes left before I run out of internet too, so it's gonna get a bit messy. I could type in Japanese if you wanted to... 部tIドン:t運でrs短dうぁt位t亜. Anyways, that probably didn' work. We had a good flight, when we got here there was a bit of a mixup because everybody had [View Full Entry]

Assumptions Asia » Japan » Chiba
Living in a country where you’re still learning the culture and the language means you will spend your days in more or less constant misunderstandings. Some of these are harmless, cute, comical. Others can be troublesome, embarrassing, even life threatening. And almost all of the worlds problems are explainable as having been caused by persons believing they have an understanding or knowledge of something they in fact do not. After the signing ceremony, and leaving Gendawg with Minami and her two outfielders I called up tried calling up Ms. Junko again to see if she was still in down [View Full Entry]

Recovering Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Today, finally, I almost feel healthy again. Certainly well enough to resume class on Monday. I've felt very confined here, ill and unable to go anywhere or do all that much, and I really look forward to being able to get out to school. My host mom must have sensed my restlessness building up the last couple of days, and she has been phenomenal in keeping me company and helping me to recover. Thursday morning, I had my follow up from Wednesday's doctor's appointment. In the afternoon, we all, except for Otoosan, went to see Shrek 3, which was a really [View Full Entry]

Almost Done Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
I know that this experience here in Japan is a once in a lifetime chance, but I can't help but look forward to when I can go home, exactly a week from now. I've loved being here with my host family, learning from them, traveling with them, and sharing our cultures with one another has been the best part of the entire experience here in Japan. Yet there are some things I'm starting to miss about home, things that I've taken for granted as normal. Like a bed. I've been sleeping on a futon here, and every day I feel older [View Full Entry]

On the way home Asia » Japan » Chiba » Narita
Sunday July 15 Well, we are now on the way home. I’m sitting in the JAL lounge at Narita waiting for our flight to JFK. It leaves at 12:00 PM and arrives in JFK at 11:30 AM on the same day - we arrive a half hour before we take off - the flight is 13 hours. Narita is closing all flights at 12:30 PM due to weather conditions from the typhoon - we are, again, lucky. It has been a real adventure! Nancy and I have just had an incredible time. All of our plans and reservations have worked [View Full Entry]

Assimilation  Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Surprisingly, I think I'm starting to really assimilate. And not just because of the fact that I sit on my heels on the floor and use chopsticks at every meal, but the small things that I've started doing without even noticing. Today I started looking inward and wondering how I've changed, and I've seen a lot of things that have changed in the short time I've been here. The first thing that I really noticed was my umbrella usage has blended with the Japanese way. Not only is it an umbrella, but its also a parasol at the same time. And [View Full Entry]
