Hi everyone, first of all I should just say that myself and everyone I know is 100% fine and reasonably unaffected by yesterday's earthquake. In my prefecture, we had an extremely bad earthquake, but it falls well short of anything that could be called a disaster. Spare your thoughts and prayers for the northern part of Honshu, about 350km north of us, where the loss of life and destruction of property is horrifying. As for me, I am now working in an english conversation school. I know I had promised to keep the blog up, and I am planning to update in the near future on what my life is generally like at the moment, but for now I think I will just talk about what happened yesterday. It was a pretty average day and I ... read more

Destination: Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture (Distance from Tokyo: 115km, approximately 72 miles) Map → (http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/regional/chiba/minamibousou.html) Date: August, 2007 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- After dinner, the owner of B&B told us there would be a firework festival in a neighbor town and would be able to see it from a beach nearby. Great! We didn’t expect there was a firework festival while we were staying. What a lucky night! So we walked down to the nearest beach. We had to kill some time till the firework festival kicked off. So we got a couple of bottles of local brewed beer, Awa Beer (http://beer.awa.or.jp/), from a convenience store. Their ale type beer was so smooth and have such a pleasant flavor of hop. We sat down on the beach with the tasty beer in our hands. It was a grea... read more

A thousand apologies for neglecting the travel blog as of late. I thought I'd write a quick one on the eve of my impromptu trip to Canada for the first time in over four years. Japan is quite difficult to get a visa for and I ran out of time on my un-extendable visitor visa. Therefore, I've gotta get the H outta here before it runs out on the 20th. I'll be in Canada for roughly 2 weeks before returning to Japan and finalizing all that bureaucratic nonsense to get a visa over there. Yumi can't come unfortunately as it is such a last minute trip and she is already working. I just double checked the last blog entry I made all the way back in August and I left off after we(Yumi, Nairb and Brian) ... read more

We had this 2-day trip in the summer of 2007 (oh gosh, 3 years ago! Time flies so quickly!). Tateyama is located in the southern part of Chiba which is not so far away from the central area of Tokyo. But the area shows you a variety of faces Tokyo doesn’t have. Beautiful beaches, magnificent landscape, tasty food, friendly people ,etc. The atmosphere is so relaxed. You hardly imagine you are in a neighbor province just 2-3 hours away from one of the busiest cities in the world. “ Let’s get the hell out here... read more

In honor of it being my birthday, and my friend spencer's birthday in october, we decided to go to Tokyo Disneyland! Unfortunately, my camera died, and I didnt get to take as many pictures as i would have like to but i think that i got a good amount for tokyo disney to have its own entry. Please excuse my typing because im using a japanese keyboard and i dont feel like trying to find every apostrophe key on here...lol. What makes tokyo disney really unique is that it is also combined with the only Disney Sea park in the world. All of the other Disney resorts have separate themes to them, but tokyo is ... read more

So, It has been awhile since i have written, my apologies. I unfortunately was having some computer issues and had to reformat my hard drive... =/ anyway... I started my first full week of classes last week! I am really enjoying the Japanese classroom, even more so than the American alternative. The pace is fast but not too fast that anybody gets left behind. I feel like it's just the right level of comfort that I need. Also, the senseis that I have are very friendly and helpful. So I went to a few different places over the last couple of days. I went back to Harajuku (of course), Asakusa, and Tokyo just recently. Harajuku: It was fashion night in Harajuku and I had a blast! I went with some friends of mine, and we shopped ... read more

Wow, so I finally made it to Japan. I have been here for about a week so I will try to do one entry a week while I'm away. I always wanted to come to japan just so that I could experience the culture and learn the language. After a long flight, all of the students of the program I'm involved in (IES) were taken from the Tokyo, Narita airport to Kaihimmakuhari to stay in the Hotel Springs for a week to do our orientation week. The staff showed us around the city and thankfully showed us how to withdraw money from the Japanese ATMs. They had been so helpful up to this point of the journey so I'm very thankful for what they have done. The first night I was in Japan, I went with ... read more

Today we decided to head to Chiba and see a temple that was not in the Lonely Planet guide called Nihonji Temple located in Chiba. The only information we had was head to Chiba, walk 4 minutes to rope-way and it would be right there.. easy enough yea? Once off the train we looked for any information that would be useful and saw a rail car in the distance and headed in that direction. Along the way an old woman sitting near the road tried to help us even though she spoke no english, some how we managed to find it. We purchased a rope way ticket that took us up the mountain and were on our way to the Nihonji Temple. There were many little buddhas along the path but the most amazing one of ... read more

Today was a free day, so we went to Disney Sea. We were there for about twelve hours. I took two videos, both of braviSEAmo. I got a thirty four second video of the water spirit and an eight minute four second video of the fire spirit through to the end. I took over three hundred pictures at Disney Sea. It was an extremely amazing place. They had a Mediterranean Harbor section, mostly Italian as they had gondola rides :P. They had a "Mysterious Island" area which was a 20,000 Leagues under the sea theme part. It had a life size replica of the Nautilus. The next area was a Little Mermaid themed place, Mermaid Lagoon. They had a life size model of King Triton's Castle in Atlantica. You could go inside it to a little ... read more

I don't expect anyone to be reading this... it's to help my memory years from now when i look back, so i apologize for boring you in advance. So... it's 12:31 AM in Japan and I'm not sleeping. That's because, at around 5:10, I decided to take a nap and woke up about an hour ago... and thus I missed dinner and now i'm here stealing free wifi. The doors to this place lock after 11 so if I leave to go into the rain I can't come back in. Breakfast was good, miso, cooked salmon, rice and seaweed. Had breakfast with Patrick, a business major? from Penn State. A lot (3) of business majors trying to expand their realm of influence. Then there was morning session of passports, post offices, atms and self introductions. Apparently ... read more
