Background: In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

I have arrived! Wow. First impressions: calm, friendly, clean, busy, foreign, fun, exciting, new, surreal, and fantastic! I arrived yesterday morning and training started this morning so I had a free day to explore with some of the new (to be) teachers I have met. There are several going to my area which is reassuring, and all of the staff seem friendly and helpful (which they assured me is only a facade meant to lull us into a false sense of security). I'm staying at a lovely hotel in Narita, and have made a few friends from all over the globe. [View Full Entry]

A layover in Japan Asia » Japan » Chiba » Narita
We were returning to California on Japan Airlines and our connection was in Japan. Because of the scheduling, we found ourselves with a 10 hour layover in Narita. Rather than spending all that time at the airport with nothing to do, we decided to see if we could pick up a one day tour of the area. We checked at the information desk and found no short tours available. Speaking only English, we were a little nervous about leaving the airport without a guide but decided to give it a try. We hit the ATM and got some Yen, managed [View Full Entry]

Week One! Asia » Japan » Chiba
Okay so technically it hasn't been exactly one week yet but since I'm living in the future by the time anybody reads this it should be spot on. It has been roughly one week since I left the bottom bunk on Taylor Ave for the great wide open. I woke up with a wicked cold on Wednesday which made me really really popular on the plane, especially because I was sitting in the direct middle of the entire aircraft. My first night in Japan was spent in Narita trying to cope with being sick and wondering if the television I was [View Full Entry]

Okay, so I made it to Japan in one piece! Not got any proper pictures yet, but will get on it in the coming days. The flights were pretty crap, got no sleep and was sooo bored for 16 hours. But its ok now; found Ian and got a class hotel room in the Hilton. Even the toilet has all kinds of buttons and dials, and flushes automatically and stuff haha. The hotel is well expensive though, so me and Ian are out of here tomorrow to pick up the keys for the guest house that we're staying in. Gonna try [View Full Entry]

From Australia my wife and I have travelled to many countries, usually without the 'benefits' of planned itineries. The following article is about my travelling to Japan with my son. I have also sailed to Antarctica, and we have sailed the Queensland coast of Australia and the Greek Islands. We have travelled through Thailand, India, Java and Bali, Fiji, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, and USA. I have created a website for fellow travellers to list any type of holiday accommodation, vehicle, boat, or tour, so as to swap holiday time with something they have for something someone else ha [View Full Entry]

Himeji Castle, Japan

Alright, so I am making the most of things here and trying to get out and see as much of Japan as I possibly can! My first adventure was to Asakusa, a little ways out of Tokyo. It an amazing little area with a giant famous temple and cool shopping! The history and temples here is really amazing! The temples are so beautiful and detailed! I was proud of myself for venturing out on my own, and also for not getting lost on the trains! Japan has an amazing public transportation system! On the bus or train you can pretty much [View Full Entry]

What to do... Asia » Japan » Chiba
So, it turns out that Nova (the school I came over here to work for) is facing major financial troubles and is very likely going bankrupt! Teahers and staff have been paid two weeks late, and some still not at all from the Sept. 15 payday. Also, many Nova teachers are getting eviction notices because even though Nova is deducting rent from paychecks they aren't actually paying the rent to the apartment complexes. Its so frustrating and I have NO idea what to do! Everyone is waiting until the 15th of October to see if people are paid, or what is [View Full Entry]

Arrival! Asia » Japan » Chiba
Hello everyone! I've officially arrived yay! Its so weird and surreal to be here. My roommates are fantastic! Laura is from Phoenix but has lived in Seattle and been to Buckley..small world. And Mataya is Canadian. Laura has been here for about 4 months and Mataya has been here for a whole year so both are very helpful and include me to do things with their friends. Being here for only a short amount of time already makes me appreciate the Pacific Northwest so much. Everything here is so squished together and no one has yards..they barely have space to park [View Full Entry]

Orientation is about over Asia » Japan » Chiba
Saa! So, the last couple days have been fun. Good news! I did not have a bloody nose today! I was also not dizzy! I don't know if I am healthy or not, but I don't feel so bad. I went to the general doctor (they don't normally have them in Japan, but this one trained in America) who didn't check my sickness, but proclaimed my nose fine (blood test and everything). I had a fever, but I don't think I still do. Anyway, I'm just going to act as if I was alright and then if I find out otherwise [View Full Entry]
