We had a well deserved sleep in and went down for a buffet breaky. After breaky we found the demand swimming pool, indoor and heated too! We did 600 laps in the 15m pool, had some fun towing each other and then off to the changerooms. Back in the hotel room it was time to do one final pack and check out! The hotel looked after our luggage while we went over to do some last minute shopping and souvenir buying at the nearby shopping mall. On the way back from shopping we took 3 loop rides around the monorail . We could easily see the other park,Disney Sea, which looks like great fun, a definite for next time. The crowds were a lot smaller too,so we recommend going on a Tuesday. Back at the hotel ... read more

Disneyland, here we come! Early start for breakfast in the Hilton's dinning room with a full buffet to fill up for the busy day ahead. The hotels bus picked us up at 7:50 for the 5 minute ride to the Disneland entrance, and have a look at the size of the crowd. Huge crowds were lining up ready for the 0800 gate opening, luckily Kate has good Japanese skills so we could move straight to a shorter line to purchase tickets. Right on 0800 the gates opened and within 5 minutes we had our 1st fast pass and were lining up for our 1st ride of the day. Tomorrowland - Star Tours, Captain EO , Space Mountain. Toon Town - Gadget Coaster, Roger Rabbit .. Critter County - Beaver Canoes where we also last saw Koala ... read more

I know what you're thinking. Why would an American travel all the way from Southern California to Japan only to go to Disney? But Tokyo Disney Sea is something else entirely. It's more like California Adventures, if it were more developed and had a stronger, broader theme. There's everything to do with the sea, from an entire world devoted to Little Mermaid to Venice and Cape Cod waterfronts to the classic 20,000 yen under the sea ride. First off, it's interesting to see what things Japanese people respond to, that Americans wouldn't. The first ride we went on Storm Rider was a virtual ride where you fly into the eye of a hurricane in order to disable it before it reaches Japan. Very specific to this country and this part of the world. Yes, we have ... read more

arrived in Narita Japan yesterday around 4:30 pm. I was exhausted since I didn't sleep on the plane except the last 20minutes. (At that time I fell asleep and I was the last one on the plane. The flight attendants had to come by and wake me up). I took a look at the airport terminal and thought about staying 20 hours sleeping stretched out on a bank of seats or the floor and went straight to the hotel reservations information desk and did something that is so uncharacteristic of me. I booked a relatively cheap room in a nearby hotel with free shuttle service for $64/night and came straight to the hotel...Narita Gateway Hotel. I tried to explore the area/neighborhood but we're right on the freeway -- one of those hotels typically near an airport ... read more

Well my plans for break changed. On the night of the 31st I was invited to visit a friend in Tokyo, well technically Chiba Prefecture. Anyways, I met them through the Kendo team when I was in Taiwan. Long story short I got to spend New Years, Sho Gatsu in Japanese, with a family. They really took care of me and fed me lots of great food. I even got an apartment to myself! I really am indebited to them for teaching me like I was a part of the family. I sorry I have not written much about my time in Japan, but I was caught off guard by how busy and tired I would be everyday. I met a lot of great people a long the way. Highlighting a few: an awesome Christmas party ... read more

After a couple days of rain, the sun finally showed its face just in time for my man's day off. After a luxurious Sunday apartment breakfast, we set off for Chiba on the Boso Peninsula to score some Buddha action. We took the Tokyowan Ferry from Kurihama across Tokyo Bay to Kanaya Port and the Boso Peninsula where we stood on the upper deck swaying with the rolling swell, enjoying views of the majestic Fuji trying to hide behind the clouds. Near our departure point we diverted to a small street fair where we couldn't resist indulging in some grilled food-on-a-stick, skewered vegetables wrapped in bacon to be exact, after which we continued on a short walk to board the ropeway to Nihon Temple on Mt. Nokogiri. The short ride up the mountainside was packed with ... read more

I had an unexpected stopover in Japan on my way to meet MaryAnne in Kuala Lumpur. I left Salt Lake a day earlier than I had originally expected, in the event of a flight delay and I was really happy the delay happened in Japan as I had been hoping for a visit to this beautiful country for quite some time. It's quite easy to get around here. Most of the stranded travelers stayed in a hotel called the Narita Excel Hotel near the airport. There is a free shuttle from the airport, a free shuttle to get downtown and it was less than $80 per night. From the shuttle stop downtown, the Naritasan Shinshoji, a Buddhist temple, was within walking distance (about half a mile) but getting there required walking in all sorts of directions ... read more

I was fortunate enough to have a layover in Japan on my way to Chongqing. I arrived in Narita (Tokyo's main airport) early in the afternoon and didn't have to leave until the next morning. After checking into my hotel (Nikko Narita) I caught a bus into the town of Narita. I made my way to the Naritasan Shinshoji Temple. This temple is super old (founded in 940) and includes a lot of buildings on a large area of land. I walked around the grounds for a while and ended up getting VERY lost. The grounds are very beautiful and full of amazing landscaping! I highly recommend a visit to this temple if you have a layover in Narita. Even if only have a few hours (4 should be enough) you could easily see it! After ... read more

Hello from tokyo. It's been a few days now since the earthquake and the situation here seems to be constantly deteriorating. The first day after the quake, everything seemed like it was back to normal. Now nearly a week has past and the city seems to be shutting itself down slowly, bit by bit. Looming over everything is the threat of the nuclear power plants which are spewing out radiation a short distance to the north of here. There are currently rolling blackouts throughout the area to conserve energy. Trains are sporadic at best and quite often simply stop running for hours at a time. I am still going to work, but my commute has become the hardest part of the day. The food and supplies situation is getting pretty bad as well. A few days ... read more
