Background: In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Elementary School Visit Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Many things have happened since the last time I updated in this journal, yet while it feels like I was just here updating yesterday, a whole week has already passed. Japanese class is basically the same as ever, frustrating, long, and boring, but its the life outside the classroom which makes up for it. On Tuesday, the UNC group went together to a nearby elementary school, broke off and went to visit with separate classrooms for the remainder of the school day. I was assigned to a first grade classroom, and the children, of which there were about 30, were incredibly [View Full Entry]

Saturday with the family Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Today was one of the most culturally immersed days I have experienced thus far in Japan. Because my host dad came home from Korea a few days ago, we have a lot more freedom about moving about and going places, and we all took full advantage of it. For starters, in the morning, we all went as a family to Yuzu's kindergarten (called youchien here) because today they were hosting a bazaar, an event where all the students and teacher come together to create a fun family social event with games, food, prizes, and a mini kiosk full of random things, [View Full Entry]

Untitled Jeff and Nancy Weed Thursday 11:00 AM Well - the journey is REALLY starting now. We made it back to JFK - left the hotel early - breakfast buffet looked terrible and way overpriced. We had a great breakfast at the terminal at a good price. I am very relaxed now … checked-in to the flight - super easy - Japan Airlines offers incredible service. Right now Nancy and I are in the JAL executive lounge (we have business class seats) - free Wi-Fi, food and drinks. It IS nice - and we do deserve it. Two hours until [View Full Entry]

An Exhausting Week Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
I think that my euphoria over arriving in Japan finally wore out sometime near the beginning of this week. I haven't quite hit that "depression period" that I'm told I will experience while abroad, and I hope I never get there, but this week really has tried my patience. There were problems with communication between the teachers, students, and director of the program, and the third year class was not being handled very well for the last several days. Several of the students (including me) wrote to notify the director, and hopefully things will be settled by the beginning of next [View Full Entry]

Ghibli Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
The last few days have been really busy, but I've managed to stay mostly on top of things, but my quiz grades are starting to suffer a little from the strain. Hopefully, after a restful Sunday, I'll be ready to start another week afresh. Because today was Friday, we had our class trip, and this time we went to the Ghibli (Jiburi) museum in Mitaka. It was wonderful, almost like going to Disneyland, but cuter and more intellectual. I really enjoyed looking at the studios, and viewing the dozens and dozens of watercolor pictures pasted up on the walls in the [View Full Entry]

Manga University Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Yesterday we had a guest speaker come to our program to tell us about his business in Japan. It was really interesting because, to start with, the man was American. He came from California, and ended up in Japan as the President/CEO of a small company called Japanime. The things we learned about from him were really interesting, and it consolidated an idea that had been forming in my mind since I arrived in Japan and first switched on the television. Manga University, a subsection of Japanime, is a small publishing branch concerned with the use of manga (cartoons, comics) as [View Full Entry]

Week 2 Asia » Japan » Chiba » Ichikawa
Here I am, with one full week in Japan under my belt already. The last few days have been quite exciting, and more than a little exhausting. Not only am I getting into the rhythm of a school student, taking the trains and hanging out after school, but I'm also becoming a new family member, a friend, a role model for the kids... its all quite exhausting. Yesterday we went on our first class trip to the Mingeikan and Shibuya. The Mingeikan was very interesting. We were fortunate enough to be able to see a special exhibition of Noboribata, and meet [View Full Entry]

12 Hours Down...4 to go! Asia » Japan » Chiba » Narita
*Rebekah says...* Greetings from Narita Duty Free, aka "Tokyo's 5th Avenue", Despite ominous tales and remembrances of land travel to JFK our ride was truely painless (although I can't yet speak for the rude back frin JFK, Thanks Brendan!). A 12 hour flight to Tokyo later we are killing time and contemplating Asian Bowl Bowl to supplement all the wonders American Airlines had to offer... Tonight Rachel and i will fly into Bangkok then to Cambodia tomorrow, well our tomorrow I suppose. We would both still love to hear from all of you. Yours in times of noodles and sleep deprivat [View Full Entry]

Today was the third day of class, and I feel like I'm starting to get into the rhythm of things. However, the one thing that I'm really having trouble getting used to is the commute to and from school every day. It really isn't that bad, actually. But a few days ago, I almost fainted when I found out it would take a little over an hour to get to and from school every day. Strange how my perspective changed so quickly. It seems like a lot of people around here have fairly long commutes, and don't seem to think much [View Full Entry]

Ohayo-gozaimasu, konichi-wa, konban-wa, etc., etc…It’s been a while - shashiburi. I guess time flies - no matter where you are…be it taking the trains in Tokyo or riding my big, red bicycle with a basket to school. Good times. Since returning to the land of extremities after from my latest adventure in April sailing down south in kiwi-land - my days have been filled with Suzuki-san’s Japanese lessons, the occasional no-mi-chai (drinking parties), moving into a giant house with a garden, venturing out to a few baseball games at Marines Stadium to support Bobby V [View Full Entry]
