Another early departure and flight from Makassar, and we are met at Manado airport in North Sulawesi by Jemy, our driver, who takes us to Tangkoko Lodge, about two hours away. This part of Sulawesi is much more densely forested than where we have been in the south, palm trees abounding and waving in the fairly breezy wind. Also very prominent is a plethora of churches, in various architectural styles, some traditional and some very modern. A lot of new churches are going up too. Jemy is a pentecostalist, and tells us there are many denominations around here. Tangkoko Lodge is basic. We decide to think of it as a homestay not a hotel. But at least the bed is reasonably comfortable and there are chairs to sit on! We have a couple of hours rest ... read more

After my new year dive trip to Gorontalo, I stayed over night in Manado as my connecting flight to Singapore was the next day (Silk Air does not fly on Sunday from Manado to Singapore). Before I left, I had made an arrangement with Manado Safari Tour for a day trip to Tangkoko National Park, and I must say the online reservation was efficiently done (www.manadosafaris.com) Upon my arrival from Gorontalo at around 7 am, I was picked up and greeted by the friendly driver, Freddy, from Manado Safari Tour, who drove me to Tangkoko, which took about two hours. It is located at the foot of "Dua Saudara Mountain" near Bitung at Batu Putih area. The drive was easy and scenic as I could see the mountain clearly but was too sleepy to stop and ... read more

No wait! Before you hit the censorship button there is a purely botanical explanation for the blog title. Many many years ago while I was a teenager I had found a picture of a plant known as Clitoria in a Nat Geo Magazine. My brain obviously filed this tidbit of information in the archived files circa 1978 of stuff you may want to remember one day and closed up the file and put it into sleep mode. It turns out, those old worn neurosynapses fired when needed and retrieved this information when I did need it....in a jungle in Sulawesi Utara. I was back in Sulawesi after Diving Bangka and Bunakin and some of the mainland sites again and had set aside a few days for ''land based activities'' - I actually wrote that on my ... read more

Raf made sure I was set for my next stop at Tangkoko Nature Reserve. I was reluctant to leave the warmth of great conversation and laughter at Cha Cha Resort (), but there always arrives a time to leave when you suffer the incurable pull of wanderlust. Raf and Reiko joined me in some comedic camera poses (I've kept my promise not to post them online), and soon I was waving goodbye from the boat. When the very kind driver picked me up, we talked about how my parents could handle me traveling as an only child and solo female traveler. He had an only daughter of his own whom he was obviously proud of and couldn't imagine letting her do such things. I explained that this was one subject where my parents, though probably worried ... read more

At the bus station for Bitung we found our bus, it's not full and we have to wait a long time before it left, maybe one hour. I quickly fell asleep soon as we left and I remember being stuck in bad traffic there was a political rally going on in one town and took ages to get past it. Everyone in the bus is annoyed.Maybe 2 hours later we arrived at the bus station in Bitung, lots of touts trying to get us to go with them they will take us to Tangkoko park for horrendous amounts, the bus conductor of the Bitung bus helped us seal a deal with a mikrolet, 5,000 rupiahs each we got dropped at the waiting area for trucks/pickups to Batuputi the town where we want to stay the night, ... read more
