On an Indonesian map the distance between Bali and the Gilis (just off the coast of Lombok) is essentially no distance at all. However, we were privy to one essential travel fact in Asia: distance does not correlate with travel time. As there seems to be no such thing as public transport in Bali, we were at the mercy of the taxi drivers again. We headed down to the main road in Ubud and hailed down the first we could see, after asking a builder if he would take us in the back of his lorry. Our private hire taxi cost 150,000 from Ubud to Padang Bai, and the driver didn’t want to give it for that. The journey took around 45 minutes and was quite luxurious in a car with upholstered seats. From the moment I submerged my face in the crystal clear water and realised I was swimming with Moorish Idols was the moment I experienced the purest sense of joy. Pure because it cost nothing and I was clad only in bikinis, snorkel & mask without the interference of anything modern or commercial. Seeing sea life as it is, no tricks, no gimmicks, no hard sell, just them and me sharing a space and equally curious of each other. This was my first day on Gili Trawangan! Trawangan Island is one the three tiny Islands just off the coast of Lombok. Each Island is fringed with white sand, aqua waters and a kaleidoscope of reef fish. Trawangan is known as the party island among the three where there is an open air party at one of ... read more

Journey to Gili Trawangan Island. Travelling to the Gili Islands was completely unplanned and was decided over a Bintang by the pool with our neighbours at Dua Durra Guest House, Kuta. It was there I met an intriguing married couple, she was from Italy and he was from Sulawesi, Indonesia. I immediately struck up conversation with them as I was travelling to Sulawesi after Bali. So, together we decided to venture to the Gili Islands the day after next. This was their second trip to Trawangan Island and my first. I had heard from an Aussie backpacker the day before who recommended the Gili islands as a must see/do! But first we had to leave Bali, this is where the headache began.. literally! I am 40 years old and I like to think I have learnt ... read more

Sunday 9th January 2011 Joanne kicked off at our driver after he arrived an hour late, then drove like Nigel Mansel to make up the time. Overtaking every car on the road – despite the fact large busses and lorries were coming at us in the opposite direction - with several very narrow squeezes around blind corners. We finally got him to ease off the accelerator, but not before we’d all said a prayer for our lives. When we eventually arrived at the port, our boat was waiting for us (not such a surprise since we hadn’t paid yet) and we were treated to the roughest boat crossing we’ve ever encountered. A screaming baby added to the atmosphere during our hour of misery and there were lots of green faces all around. Joanne had never been ... read more

17/02/2011- 21/02/2011 For the ultimate days I decided to go to Gili Trawangan island, together with Diego. A good place to spend my last days, nice beaches, good food, and every night there was a party for the ones who enjoyed a good beer... Before leaving on this trip one of the things I really wanted to do was Diving. I actually had the plan to go for my Padi certificate in Thailand, but for some reason I never came around to it. But on my final day we decided to go on at least one dive, and Gili island is not the worse place to go diving. And to be honest it was one of my best experiences so far, it was mindblowing!!! diving, swimming next this big turtle, sitting around a giant manta, big ... read more

As if one paradise tropical island wasn't enough, we headed to more. After our stay in Ubud we went by minibus and speedboat to Gili Trawangan, near Lombok, a mere 4 hour journey away. The steep $140 + return trip pricetag may have put us off but this is the wet season and therefore off peak. This added to several different speedboat companies and thus there were bargains to be had. Our journey out there cost us 350,000 IDR each (less than $40) Of course, when we only had a single ticket, the blokes arranging the boats tried to talk us into buying the return ticket, as it would be full price on the island, but we've heard that sort of talk before and decided to risk it. As it was, our return ticket, bought on ... read more

Leslie is now a Junior Open Water Padi holder...well done Leslie! What a week! This entry is about only one thing, the passion of a family for sharing life together, this is what make me think life is so great! I have introduced Ma'ri to diving two years ago in El Nido, Philippines. Over the last two years, Ma'ri has now dived in more than 10 countries...and the year is not over, but she is already totaling 85 dives. Back in El Nido, Leslie did his Bubble Maker...a kind of dive trial specially made for the little ones. But since then, he has been waiting for his 10th birthday, and the chance to dive...like the "big guys". I still remember seeing him in Gilis back in June 2009...a junior diver of around 11 years old was ... read more

After much discussion in Ubud as to what our next destination would be we found an inexpensive bus-boat combo to get us to the Gili Islands, so Gili Trawangan it was! We heard and read so much about these islands off the northwest coast of Lombok; no motorized vehicles are allowed on any of the three islands, the snorkeling is supposed to be fantastic and it's a real laid back vibe, all of which would be proven true with a five day hang on Gili T.! Our pickup was late in the morning, and then it was a mad scramble to get to Padang Bai where we were to catch our boat but managed to make it in the nick of time...fast boat to the Gili's is the way to go, certainly more expensive but only ... read more
