Gili Trawangan by Polona Gili Trawangan is filled with tourists, who come here for a short holiday and with a single intention – to party. The island itself is small and on the beach, as you walk along, there are so many bars, you could go to a different one each night of the year. But although the streets are busy, as soon as you move to a side street you get away from all the hustle and bustle. It was a tourist mecca, but we enjoyed it still, as you don't have to be a part of it if you don't want to be. Also, what we noticed on the first day, not only is there enough drinks, but everyone openly advertises magic mushrooms, although they are illegal. So if you want to “fly to ... read more

Firstly, apologies for the lack of blogging on this trip! It seems hard to find the time to get online and blog but I'll try to catch you all up on what we've been upto now. So from Ulu Watu we went to Nusa Lembongan. We got the seriously over-priced taxi from Thomas' Homestay to Sanur and stayed one night in Sanur. The beach there is supposed to be a real tourist resort but it didn't seem all that beautiful. Most of the holiday makers looked to be Balinese - maybe they like to go there and stay away from all the westerners in Kuta! Anyway, we booked our ticket for the boat to Nusa Lembongan for the following morning and then stayed in a nice place called the Watering Hole. The next morning we caught ... read more

"Welcome to my paradise!  Where the sky's so blue and the sun so bright Welcome to my paradise! Where you can be free and the party is never ending!" Palmeras ... read more

Hi everyone, We are on the Gili Island's and I think it is my favourite place I have been so far on my trip. Its is absolutly amazing... So picking up from my last blog, we got the night train to Kuala Lumpa, Me and James didn't sleep that well, so was shagged when got to Kuala Lumpa. We got to the hostel at 7:30am and the nice people at the hostel let me sleep in the janitor room, where there was a bed as I was poorly. The hostel was really really nice, really clean and just a really cool place. Once I had some sleep I felt a little better again. We spent 2 nights and 2 full days in Kuala Lumpa. Im not going to write that much as I was ill with ... read more

Once I started obsessing about Bali, I quickly learned about the Gili islands and then it all went to hell - I was in full on fantasy travel planning mode. Anyone who knows me would know that this amount of excitement turns me into a beast who talks to fast and cant hold a conversation about anything else. Matt was pleased with me. To explain to you why i got so excited, heres some background. The Gili islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air) are basically known for their white sand, insanely clear turquoise water, and off-the-beach snorkeling. Most travelers come here to marvel at the beaches as well as do nothing. Unless you come to Gili T. And then you come for the night time activities as well. Most nights of the week one ... read more

We left Ubud after a great few days for the Gili islands, 3 small islands which were supposed to have amazing beaches. We were picked up early and driven to the port in the town of Padangbai about an hour away, where you get the boats to the Gili's from. This town is pretty small and people mainly only go through it to get the boats to/from the Gili's. After a bit of messing about (swapping tickets over, being herded from bus to boat etc), we hopped on the 'fast' boat which was due to take 2 hours to get to Gili Trawangan, the biggest of the 3 islands. Gili Meno and Gili Air are the other 2, one is inhabitable and the other is very quiet. After about 3 hours (common theme in Asia- buses/boats ... read more

Upon arriving to the Gili’s we asked the locals if they knew our friends and asked for Lachie, the groom. They tried to pronounce the name a few times and then scurried off. We stopped at a café and ordered some lunch and then a local comes back with a very short Indonesian man named “Loki”. They ask “is this your friend?” We giggle and thank them for their help but say no, he’s not the friend we are looking for but if he wants to be our friend too that’s okay. ☺ It was cute. We had only spent three days in the Gili’s and maybe it was enough but we had already made friends with the locals. I particularly liked Tino. He worked in a clothing and jewelry shop. At first he was trying ... read more

18th - 21st April Early morning of the 18th we meet Eyal out the front of our hotel at 7am so we can all catch a boat together to Gili Island. This is a small island off Lombok., there are three Gili islands. Lombok is where the wedding is going to be. We have heard our other friends are staying at Gili Island Trawangan. We have booked a car to take up to the harbour and a boat to take us quickly there. There are only so many boats leaving the harbour. Eyal is as I remember him. I met him once or twice quite a while back through the friends on this trip. He is hung over and explains as he is Jewish and with an Israeli background he found is very difficult to get ... read more

... read more

The first thing I noticed about Gili Trawangan was that no one was harassing us about transport. This could be because the only forms of transport on the island are horses, bikes and good old-fashioned walking. Despite the reggae music and boat motors Trawangan was a wonderful place! It is easy to see why the guidebook states that many people end up staying longer than planned, we did 4 nights and I think we'd only really planned on 2 or 3. I would have happily stayed longer! Our snorkeling trip turned out to be too good to be true. We had paid $30 each for island hopping and 5 snorkel stops. In the end we stopped at Gili Meno for a mediocre lunch and snorkeled twice. Naturally, places on the island were offering trips for about ... read more
