We arrive at the airport, or at least we think we do… we got the airport train from the centre of KL and headed straight for the departure terminal, little did we know we were flying from a completely different airport?! So off we go to get a bus link to the other airport, on approaching the airport we are a little sad as it’s tiny in comparison to the one we just came from, meaning the departure lounge will be tiny too, so no cinema or bars for us!? On getting to the mini airport that is just for Air Asia we find Clare in McDonald’s, pretty much all westerners were congregated here! A few hours in the airport and off to Bali for diving, tanning and lazy beach days, yippee!! The first thing we ... read more

My glands are still up so no diving this morning. Grrrr. Alex is also suffering from an ear infection that will stop him diving for 2 weeks. He and Kasper have decided to leave tomorrow on the boat trip to Flores and Komodo to hunt dragons (by camera of course). The trip is 4 days there on a boat which does not sound ideal to me even if Flores and Komodo do sound amazing. Regardless, I am constricted by time and would not be able to go anyway. A day spend hanging around in the pool and on the beach again. Not what I wanted to do, but fun in its own way. By late afternoon, I had decided to give diving a try. If it hurt too much, I'd just get back on the boat. ... read more

Kate had a new group in today so we had to do our dive at 9am. Good job I didn't go to the party after all! We headed out to Shark Point to do the Underwater Naturalist course which is basically a treasure hunt of fish and coral. I had a slate with loads of fish and coral on and had to point out the things around us and identify them. The current was so strong down at 22m that at one point Kate and I had to hold on to the coral to stop ourselves being dragged away and over the edge of the nearby basin. It was a really tough swim to get higher up the coral and above the current. We were knackered but exhilarated! We stayed down for about 45 mins but ... read more

Greetings to all! We left Bali early Thursday morning and headed east by boat to the Gili islands, located just off the coast of neighboring Lombok. In doing so we faced a Locksian dilemma (Goldie, not John), requiring us to choose one of three distinct islands: the uber-mellow Gili Air, the somewhat livelier Gili Meno, or the more freewheeling atmosphere of Gili Trawangan (known as Gili T). Reports of great diving, cheap food and drink, and more reliable electricity eventually swayed us towards Gili T. We decided to travel via the fast boat, which advertised a two-hour crossing powered by its "900 Horsepower!!!" engines, rather than the slow (read: lame) boat, which takes six hours. Despite our high expectations, our boat did not resemble the one from the opening credits of Miami Vice, nor did we ... read more

After reading my title to this blog your probably asking yourself "Stephanie went fishing!?" and yes folks I did indeed =) Katy and I met these three guys from England and asked us if we wanted to go fishing with them and some guides the following day, we said sure why not...our parents will not believe this for a second haha. I also thought that my dad would be really proud of me =) So we got up the following morning, had breakfast and Katy decided not to go fishing cause she wasn't feeling too hot but I decided to go anyway cause when do you get the chance to fish in the tropics!? We had the fishing boat from 8:30am to 11:30am and guess what...I caught 2 fish!!! The other guys that I went with ... read more

Gili T is amazing. It's an amazing little paradise. And somehow, EVERYONE on the island knew my name. I probably told my name to about 5 people on the island and after three days we would walk down the street and everyone would say hello to me by name. Not Stephanie for some reason, but always "Hi Katrina." Another favorite was "What's up dude?" as that is apparently what Indonesians think that Americans say every other sentence. Funny at first, a little wearing when you get it everytime you walk down the street and there is only one street on the island. We honestly didn't do that much on Gili T unless you count lying on the beach/ by the pool/ in our air conditioned room. Stephanie went on a fishing trip with some English guys ... read more

We were up early (one day I will get a lie in!!) for our transfer to the port. The van picked us up at 08.00 and the four of us were off. We'd been travelling about 5 minutes when we realised that the gorgeous sea view was on our right which meant that instead of heading north to the port, we were heading south!!! Now what was going on??? When we asked the driver, we were just repeatedly told it was fine. What could we do? There was a 'tour guide' with us on this section of the journey who wanted us to buy tickets back from the island with him and was most put out that we had already bought them. This seemed a little bizarre as he had been with the van the night ... read more

Back to the dive centre at 9 to start our formal training. Our instructor is a Londoner called Adam who is a great laugh and has told us where to go out on the island. ;-) We started in the classroom (a table on the beachfront!) and talked through some of the principles we had watched in the video and then it was wetsuits on and into the pool. This was a very bizarre experience and we learned how to do skills like setting up our equipment, take off our mask and replace it and get around underwater. the first tie you breathe underwater is so weird!!! Unreal. That afternoon we went out on the boat to do a 12m dive. I kid you not I was shitting myself. When we got to the dive spot, ... read more

More pool skills in the morning and another open water dive in the afternoon. We had to do skills on the ocean floor for a while and then went off to explore. Today was even better (minus the shark!) as I wasn't desperately trying to remember everything all the time and could appreciate the fish. We saw a turtle quite happily swimming around, just like on Nemo!! It was fab!! We did our final tests and exam and I passed!!! Just the 2 dives tomorrow and I am certified!!! I still felt rough from the dives so stayed in with cheesy American TV and slept. I am really looking forward to tomorrow, but also looking forward to a day off the day after!! This has been really hard work and far longer days than I was ... read more
