Hello! God i never have the time to do this... and i forgot to mention about the beauty of Hinduism, the hilarity of dave's instant sunburn, and probabaly a million more things!! We did do more than go to bars. Honest. Anyway, from bali we fles to Flores, which is a few islands east. We just went to the port town of Luabuan bajo (or something similar), and from there we got ourselves on a 4 day boat trip westwards to Lombok, calling in on Rinca and Komodo to wander the jugle-y land and see the dragons (oooOOOOoooo). They are in fact pretty massive. and pretty dangerous - you're not menat to go too close... which dave neglected to realise when he tried to take a photo, not realising that the camera distance, and the real ... read more

Hi folks!!! Got back out of Bali pretty quick and headed for Mataram in Lombok to start our 4 day boat trip to Kimodo and Rinca. Weren't too sure what to expect but the agent had assured us that there would be a proper toilet... well at least more than leaning over the edge of a boat!!Living was pretty basic, the upper deck was the communal bedroom and the sea was the bathroom. The crew and 12 other passenger were a really good bunch of folk, so we had a great laugh along the way. We motored out from a harbour in the southeast of Lombok, along the coast of sumbawa, across the open sea to the islands of Komodo and Rinca and then on to Lubhan Bajo in Flores. Stopping to go snorkelling or ... read more

Like the navigator Antonio de Abreu before me I headed East across the arphicalego, towards the Cabo das Flores Instead of searching for Sandalwood I was looking for Komodo Dragons and coloured volcanic lakes. For currency I carried Indonesian Rupiah, whereas the Makassasrese before me would have used Gold, or maybe even elephant tusk. Flores had definitely seen changes. Six-foot Satellite dishes beamed MTV down from space into villages where huts are still made from bamboo. Noisy Bemo wind through roads which follow the ancient igneous landscape. The crucifix looms tall in villages where some do not know who Jesus Christ was, but still practice Animism. Buffalo sacrifices are still common, tiny huts called Ngadhu are the centre of each village, and death is still a punishment used in some villages. Yet in Labanbajo there ... read more

Hello, What a busy time I've had. The last time I wrote I was in Bali about to go into the countryside to explore. I stayed in Ubud, a much quieter place than Kuta, surrounded by rice fields where I could hear ducks and frogs all day long. A short walk away I found a forest full of monkeys, one of them even tried to steal my friend Sarah's bag, they are very cheeky! While I stayed in Ubud I took a tour around Bali, first stopping at a rice field where I learnt how it is made, it looks just like barley and grows in very wet fields and it comes as white, red and black rice. I then went up to Git Git waterfalls, to a royal temple and I went to a school ... read more

2 in 2 days, how much writing - i appologise, i think this one is going to be an essay?! From Ubud we opted to go with Perama to the Gilli Islands, bit of a cop out tour group thing, but anything for any easy life! While waiting for the bus I recieved a very warm goodbye from a random man who'd tried to sell us a room on our first day, one big bear hug later, I was good to go! We were bused to Padangbai and from there got a direct ferry all the way to Gilli Trawangan, it was such a nice way to get there, we were on the ferry with a whole load of other backpackers, pretty much the first ones we'd seen since being in Indonesia! and on the way ... read more

So Andy, Jur and myself awoke too early from our beds in Bajawa to wait for our bus to Moni. When the bus pulled up in front of our hotel we saw something that we didn't expect. What could it be? Pigs? Chickens? No, saw that before on the bus. Nope it was two white girls. They looked just as shocked to see us boarding the bus. We soon talked to each other. It turns out that they (Kat and Rachael) were from Australia and were studying Indonesian in Malang, Java. They were on a short vacation. We decided to team up from there. We could offer them protection from boys (they had boyfriends back home and were sick of being whistled at) and they, being able to speak fluent Indonesian, could protect us from being ... read more

With my new founds partners in crime (Jur and Andy) we continued east through Flores. The roads in Flores are something else. They are not too bumpy, but they are very, very, curvy. It's not a drive you can sleep on. We were told one statistic that for a 400km distance that the road is over 700km long. That's a lot of winds and bends. Luckily for our Ruteng to Bajawa route we were able to charter a driver. He was heading that way anyway with an empty SUV, so we were able to talk him into letting us tag along for the same price as the bus. Not a bad deal for either side. So after a not too nauseous 4 hour ride we arrived to Bajawa. Quickly after arriving we met up with a ... read more

After a grueling 28 hour bus and ferry combo from Mataram, Lombok I arrived to Labuhanbajo, Flores. The city (or better called town) is the main port on the western end of Flores. It is not much to speak of because is mainly just a road with some hotels, little local restaurants, and several diving/tour guide offices. It does serve as an excellent port to explore the komodo islands national park just west of the town. That's what made me stay. After checking out the dive companies there, I chose to go with reef seekers. In my opinion they are the most professional dive company there and did a great job. I spent three days diving there. There are so many world class sites there. The park consists of several smaller islands and two bigger (komodo ... read more

Do meet a friend on the boat to Flores and have him take you to his village in the middle of nowhere to meet his family that he hasn't seen for three years. buy large bag of sweets for the hyperactive mob of children that attack you from all angles and who can't keep their eyes off the giant whitey towering above them at your friend's village. sail to the island of Rinca and hunt for some Komodo Dragons. Do not spend christmas opening presents, cause remember you don't have anything to open or any friends to celebrate with for that matter. Do however let the kind owner of where you are staying in Moni cook you the three biggest meals of your life and climb Kelimutu volcano and see its giant black and bright green ... read more
