Here it is. My 40th birthday. There seems to be a lot of meaning attached to this one. It certainly is a landmark (most likely the half-way point of this human existence) but, like most things, I think it is what you believe it to be and what you make of it. A good friend reminded me that many people do not have the opportunity to live to this age and that it is an honour and privilege to awaken again each day. Thank you for this inspiration. For me personally this birthday is an occasion to visit a part of the world that I have wanted to see for some time and go on something of a spiritual, soul-searching journey. So I began the day with a yoga class at Prana, a very beautiful resort ... read more

On our first full day in Seminyak we wandered around the town, getting our bearings and getting a feel for the town’s character. The Lonely Planet describes Seminyak as “flash, brash, phoney and filled with bony models”. Perhaps I should have read that part of the book before setting aside four days there. It’s certainly worth a look, the beach is great, there are lots of boutiques and designer shops, and there is an abundance of restaurants and massage spas. Every man and his dog will offer you a taxi ride, a massage or some trinkets as you pass by. It’s great for the outer pleasures, but not really conducive to delving deeper. Most tourists tend to stay in Seminyak and, now that we realise how small Bali actually is, it makes sense that many people ... read more

After setting up food and litter trays for the cats, we made our way to the airport. It’s not long since our last trip in July. After a year of no holidays, 2015 is certainly the year for travel. Unlike last time, we left the mains power on as we like to come back home to a working fridge :-) What a pleasant surprise to bump into an old colleague at the airport. The lovely Melvin, who used to be a concierge at National Australia Bank, is now a flight attendant for Virgin and was rostered on our flight! He looked after us beautifully – thanks Melvin! After a 6 hour flight, we landed in Denpasar and I must say I was relieved to have pre-booked our airport transfer. It’s absolute mayhem at the international airport, ... read more

We all woke up excited because we were going diving and snorkeling Diving-Indo. We had a quick breakfast then got on our bus . The dive master showed us cool fish and bad fish on a chart. I was hoping to see a unicorn fish. When we got to the dock we put on our wet suits. We looked like spies. We then got on the boat. My dad was going to snorkel with me first while Ania dived. I put on my flippers and my mask and snorkel. My dad pt on his tank so I can try it. Ania put on her tank and went down with the dive master. After Ania went, my dad and the snorkel guide went in the water. I was a little scared to go because of the bad ... read more

Sarah: Hellooooo Bali! Just relaxing after our third day here, when we finally did something! (Un?)fortunately all we did for the first two days was recover from a late last night in Oz and 24 hours of overnight travelling by eating, sleeping and reading, so I'll keep it brief... From Brisbane we flew to Kuala Lumpur, waiting in their freezing airport (air con does not need to take you to the Arctic guys) for a few hours, warmed by some spicy laksa (noodle soup) before catching our onward flight to Bali. We'll be calling back in to Kuala Lumpur in about 3 months time to catch our flight back to Blighty! We finally arrived in Seminyak, Bali on Friday mid-afternoon and were shown to our enormous two storey 'villa' complete with balcony, lots of storage space ... read more

So looking forward to spending our first ten days with our great friends, Anne, Doug and Mark - all booked into the Sing Ken Ken for the 10 days as it's beachfront and Doug's prerequisite was beachfront. Sing Ken Ken is now part of the Interval Group - but I don't know how long is going to last - though a beautiful room, huge and decked out with marble and a very comfy bed - the facilities seem to be already deteriorating - as is the way in Bali. The pool area was quite nice - rooftop pool and bar overlooking Seminyak Beach - first day no cold beer and only had 6 stubbies, then no beer for a week - so BYO to the freezer in the bar area on the rooftop - perfect! First ... read more

Saw the crew off on Thursday night and had another two nights at the Sing Ken Ken before moving over to the Peninsula Bay Resort for a week, give it a go. Had never stayed over the Tanjung Benoa way - big mistake! Arrived Saturday afternoon and then had dinner with Reg, Adele and Noah at the Surya Cafe on the bay - a great little seafood place right on the beach - all the fish and crustaceans were all alive and in tanks - you just chose what you what - was a deliciously fresh and tasty meal of red snapper, prawns, calamaria and lobster! Also another great meal at Glaze a beaut restaurant with Asian/Western Mix. Took a ride up onto the Bukit whilst over this way as well and had brunch at one ... read more

To say that I picked up two guys on a street corner and spent the night drinking and dancing with them is, well, accurate. For those of you who haven't travelled solo before let me explain to you how it works. You have to be comfortable in your own company. Happy to spend a morning, day and night finding your own way, independently exploring and wandering around revelling in the sights and experiences you encounter, seeking out new places to eat and sitting alone amongst locals and travellers alike indulging in people watching. Relishing the freedom it brings, the unique discoveries, the sense of liberation, personal achievement and privilege.  But you also have to put yourself out there to meet other travellers, and if the current situation doesn't lend itself easily to this you need to find or create one that ... read more

Day 1: Heat, humidity and a cacphony of sounds, scents and sights I haven't experienced in eight years welcomed me back to South East Asia, reminding me how much I love this part of the world. Indonesia is a new adventure for me; the reinvigorated memories are an entwined mix from my travels in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam,  Laos and Thailand...a SE Asian medley. Arriving at my pre booked hotel last night was a lesson in why it's sensible to read The Lonely Planet before you board the plane. I had managed to book a perfectly pleasant though rather souless, mostly empty and not quite complete hotel catering for Balinese in the middle of, well not a lot.  Turns out Denpasar airport and Denpasar are not actually in the same location!  That said, the hotel staff true ... read more
