The Bali Temple Tour and the return As a solo traveller i preferred a join in group tour. In addition to reducing the cost it also facilitated companionship on the tour. But I was in poor luck for the. “Temples Tour” as most people had already have made their arrangements. So,I had to take the expensive option of hiring a car myself for the day. Then I reasoned that it was a price worth paying as a Bali visit will not be complete if I left without seeing some of the temples. Temples are such n integral part of Balian culture. There are thousands of temples on the island graded according to their importance and location. Nearly every house of any value has a temple on ite grounds and then there are ones shared by a ... read more

The night flight from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan Airport landed in Kualalampur by day break. This time there was a special route for transit passengers ( flight from Kochi for some reason did not have that option) and one did not have to go through customs formalities. With a window seat it was nice to see all the landmarks below though there was fair bit of cloud cover at times. We landed in Bali on time. Got a taxi to Grandma's hotel. Escaping the grime, dust and chaos of Kathmandu Bali was more than living up to the expectations. The roads were clean and less crowded. Except a couple of dual carriageways most roads were single carriage. However the dirt and dust were absent. It was hard to find any potholes on most roads. In the cities and ... read more

As I landed in Bali, a wave of nostalgia and a flood of memories swept over me. With tears in my eyes, I realised I was here 20 years ago ... with Daddy (& mama as well of course). Wow, I’m not really the sentimental type either so I’ve no idea where that came from ?. Must have got some dust in my eye or something ? Oh by the way the pictures on the way to the plane are in Yogya...yes the airline hands out umbrellas for you to walk to the plane with!!! Anyway, back to Bali - WELCOME TO BALI BABY!!! Whoooo hoooo! ?? 1st impressions compared with Java is how characterful and traditional Bali is even from just stepping into the airport, with the staff dressed in traditional dress and lots of ... read more

24th March: Off to Bali. Rained all the way to Melbourne. We had a couple of drinks, booked luggage through weird but good getting our boarding pass as well, do every thing your self! We did get some help. Films on the plane were $8, games $6 so did not buy any. Good trip except for twins that screamed their heads off, when the plan started to Taxi and after a breather would start again. We arrived and were able to find a place to get a Sim card, once we worked out how to get the cover off! We then headed, not sure where we ended up but plenty of people wanting to take us to the accommodation. We knew we needed the Blue Taxi, well tired and having a taxi a driver pestering us ... read more

373 days. 34,925km. More than 91 cities in 11 countries. The longest and final chapter of the trilogy is now complete. The entire odyssey is now over. First Latin America, then Europe, now Asia. The last leg of my journey around the world was only supposed to be nine months long; I ended up travelling around Asia for just over a year. Perhaps it is unsurprising that things took a bit longer than planned; I spent three months in India alone and it was fanciful to think I could've 'done' China in just one month - I ended up taking two. Considering that my entire trip has taken over two years, when I think about everywhere I went, I had travelled fast - probably faster than you should when travelling for such a long time. So ... read more

With Bali's largest volcano Mount Agung billowing smoke and threatening imminent eruption, things weren't look good for the Indonesian leg of our trip. However, Mother Nature showed just how unpredictable she can be and to the date of writing, Agung hasn't erupted. We felt slightly apprehensive about being on the island in the event of an eruption, so on arrival in Jakarta, we decided to avoid Bali and fly to Lombok - an idyllic and less developed island to the right of Bali. Our first stop in Lombok was Kuta, a small town famous for its picture perfect beaches. The best beaches are located a bit of a drive from the town itself so we decided to rent a scooter for the five days we were there. Donal has become a bit of a pro over ... read more

In our never ending bid to save money round every corner possible we opted for the "slow boat" instead of the "fast boat" over to Bali. We managed to save about £5 each but it really wasn't worth the hassle of what ended up being a 14hr journey door to door. During the journey we had crazy couples asking us if we were worried about a possible tsunami whilst on the ferry (due to all the media coverage about the volcano), urm, nope not really.. We had tragic buskers on the ferry making a racket and then asking us to pay for the privalage of being entertained. About 50 people boarded the ferry to try and flog various snacks and drinks before we set off etc, etc, it was standard SE Asia chaos. In the end ... read more

Back again! So we left Balangan Beach and went straight to Seminyak which is above Kuta centre and near the beach. We hopped in a taxi and paid way too much (again). First tip, only use a taxi for small trips otherwise download the Uber app and order uber taxi's. We prefer to drive our scooters everywhere but if we need a car we get Uber which is not even a third of the taxi prices. Prices here in general have really gone up and you would be surprised how expensive it is over here, ok depending on where you go haha. You can hire a scooter for approximately 7 dollars a day and not only is this a cheaper way of getting around it also takes you to places a lot quicker. Traffic is quite ... read more
