We set off for Ranakpur, after our three lovely relaxing days in Udaipur, we stopped in our guesthouse that Bengali was so eager to get to. Ranakpur really is a lovely little place, it’s tucked away in remote and quiet valley of the Aravalli Range. Our guesthouse was nice but our room turned out to have a great big hole in the wall so we had to get them to come in and block it over so the mozzies wouldn’t get in. They didn’t seem to see the big deal at all! We had lunch at the guesthouse and then we went on a walk into the hills where Bengali said we might see a jaguar. Well needless to say we didn’t see the jaguar but we saw this amazing lake hidden in the hills and ... read more

Well after another beautiful beach we booked a grueling 12 hour night train to Kerela just to remind ourselves that we are actually backpacking and not just on vacation. Kerela is famous for the backwaters where you can hire your own personal house boat and cruise around the canals and lakes for a day. So after sharing the lovely 2nd class train with no air conditioning with quite a few locals and of course a few cockroaches as well we decided to treat ourselves and stay at a pretty posh hotel - this is definitely not the backpacking I remember... Well after a quick dip in the pool and another beautiful sunset at the beach while amusing the locals as I try and play catch with the local kids, we pack our overnight bags for a ... read more

Goa beyond the beaches - Part I Text and photographs copyright Neville Bulsara, 2006. All rights reserved. Their expressions were priceless; I mentally kicked myself for forgetting to lug my camera along. "What? You mean there’s more to Goa than the beaches?" they said, carefully setting down their cups of coffee, incredulity writ large on their faces. "Come on, you should know better that that! Goa’s all about it’s beaches, that’s why people go there in the first place!" "There is a lot more to Goa", I said, before rattling off a long list of places to visit and document on the photography tour I was planning to undertake; a tour of Goa where I planned to photograph everything save the beaches. Incredulity gave way to skepticism, complete with the exchange of fu... read more

Unbelievable. Humidity and pollution so high that walking the street is like being repeatedly slapped around the face by a warm and rather dirty flannel. And the streets - so hectic they make Mumbai look like Milton Keynes on a quiet Sunday, and Bangalore like Worthing on Sea off-season. The traffic is gridlocked, every pavement is crammed with stalls, touts swoop on you as soon as you stop moving, and the beggars are spectacular. You almost feel like clapping them on the back and saying 'well done'. (But I think that might be in poor taste.) The traffic is an experience in itself. Everything is knackered, from the taxis pouring out black exhaust fumes to the old boys pulling the human powered rickshaws. Forget auto rickshaws. Or bicycle rickshaws. This is the real deal. Finally left Mumbai maybe 3-4 days ago (remember? I have no concept of time..). Took another overnight bus.. which I still have one more to take to get back to Mumbai... Argh! Anyway, this one was just nasty. My bed smelled of urine, someone had previously had a little accident on it before I guess. It was so strong that I just couldn't handle it anymore and found another empty bunk below us, so I slept there... with the cockroaches crawling over me all night... I can deal with that, but not the smell and the fact of lying in it.. no way~! Anywa it only took 14hrs not the 16 they had told us.. WOW! What a surprise! Anyway we head to Baga beach first which to tell you the truth it's just insanity! It's ... read more

It's not every day that you can decide, over breakfast, to go and see the Dalai Lama, but that is what happened to us on our second day in McLeod Ganj. Of course, we knew the Dalai Lama was in town because of the grid-lock of buses, jeeps and cars on the narrow streets, the hundreds of maroon-cloaked monks, all the hotels filled with westerners and the smiles on the shopkeepers' faces as business was good. What we didn't realize was how easy it was to go and see the Dalai Lama. Every day he held a 'teaching' session at the main temple adjacent to his residence and anyone can attend. The teaching began at 1:00pm but the crowds - foreigners, Tibetans and monks - were streaming toward the temple complex before 11:30am to get a ... read more

A little behind on my travel blogs, but do not worry, now that I'm traveling by myself I'll have plenty of time to catch up! Going back three weeks ago . . . We were still in India, still in Rishikesh, seems like a lifetime ago on a different planet. Rachel, Jordana and I had planned to go on a four day Himalayan trek to climb a mountain peak which reached a little more than 4,000 meters (the highest mountain peak in Lake Tahoe is at Heavenly, and is ONLY 3068 meters tall!). We had our guide Mokesh to lead us through beautiful mountains, remote villages and deep valleys. Despite cold weather, hail and rain, we reached our peak on the fourth day! It was exhilarating. Here are my pictures from that event, enjoy! Next Destination: ... read more

My next three destinations all occupy the southern section of the very large state of Rajastan. After leaving Bundi, my next destination was a whistle stop tour of Chittorgarh, a town boasting what is billed as the finest fort in Rajastan, as well as some one-of-a kind architecture that you just have to visit to appreciate. The town isn't supposed to be that great to stay in, so I went to Udaipur that evening, which is widely considered to be most romantic city in the 'Stan. I wanted to describe an experience I had riding the train - I had to buy an unreserved seat ($1) on the train because I was buying the ticket just before it arrived, but the unrerverved seating cars where it entitled me to sit had people hanging out of the ... read more

Sajjan Garh, a former monsoon palace 1100 foot high above the surrounding and 3100 foot from sea level, was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1884. This palace is absolutely amazing, it offers a panoramic overview of the city's lakes, palaces and surrounding country side and you can just wander around inside as you like. It is exactly how it was 100 years ago, it’s like the family just left and took all the furniture. You can just stand on these bedroom balconies and imagine that you are back in time. Irene and I spent quite a while wandering around and imagining ourselves back in time! The views were spectacular and the whole surrounding area is wooded as the former rulers had a royal shooting preserve there. Now there is a nature museum downstairs and you ... read more
