Puskhar is the location of the only Brahma Temple in the world, the lake was apparently created when Brahma threw a lotus flower on the ground, it is also the biggest dope haven in India. It is very chilled and relaxed, no surprise, and has great shopping so you can wander around for ages. There are all these mad priest hounding you though trying to make you give them money so they will pray for your loved ones or so you can throw flowers in the lake by the Ghats (a holy bathing place). And if you avoid them, you get accosted by the Gypsies that say hello and shake you hand and then try to do henna all over it before you have a chance to pull away! They are very enterprising here! When last I wrote, I was about to bid farewell to the eternal Taj Majal to begin the heavily touristed Rajastan circuit. Well, I'd like to clarify that statement. It is heavily touristed *in the right season*. It is unlikely that the present time would qualify as that. I deliberated for quite a while about whether I was prepared to endure the 100 - 110 degree weather that I could expect. (that's 38-43 for the non-Americans reading this). It would be, I decided, a character building experience. Besides, it is a dry heat, which makes it much more tolerable, and I could bail out at any time I wanted, and go to the mountains, which aren't that far to the north. Rajastan, which translates to "Land Of Kings" was so named because of the high concentration ... read more

Thank god for small mercies. So we arrived into Jaipur and once we got through the usual rugby scrum of rickshaw drivers and settled into our hotel those small mercies revealed themselves. Firstly a running hot shower which after a week of washing from hot water in a bucket and secondly and the best of all, a colour tv with (wait for it)...... LIVE PREMIERSHIP football!! I watched Liverpool deservedly beat Everton through tears of pure joy! It was like seeing football for the first time again! But anyway, i didn't come to India for that..... things we've done so far in Jaipur.... visited the city palace, which was actually quite nice, buildings were very good and it had a few very well decorated doorways such as The Peacock Gate. We also visited the hyped up ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Hampi March 28th 2006

Ok. The longer Hampi post... What was really striking about Hampi was that just a few hours on from the train journey, I find myself in some past life, Quantum Leap style. From Panaji, an Indian town that feels more like somewhere on the Med, to the India you see on travel documentaries - cows by the score, oxen-pulled carts, huge temples, crumbling buildings, and touts, touts, touts and then, for good measure, a few more touts. It is a very, very strange environment. Like stepping back 500 years. Or maybe like going to the Glastonbury Festival three months after its finished. Or, maybe, it's like visiting the former centrepiece of an incredibly wealthy and populous civilisation that has fallen into ruin, and slowly been recolonised by Hindu pilgrims, travellers, and the assorted stalls, travel agents ... read more

Early start for my train journey to Hampi. And another trip across the Western Ghats. Thank god I went sleeper and not A/C this time - the big difference being that the sleeper cars have open windows, aside from a few bars across them, as opposed to the tinted plate glass windows on the A/C carriages. And when you're crossing the Western Ghats, open windows are the way to go. The scenery was absolutely magnificent. Huge rolling expanses of forested hills, green spotted with an autumnal brown, and fading into multiple shades of blue gray as they disappeared into the distance. Again, I made the decision to look, and not photograph - I took a few shots, but they couldn't possibly do it justice. It never ceases to amaze me that there are countless millions of ... read more

Leaving Ireland was fine, a bit tear soaked for Emma and her Mom (mothers are the same everywhere!) and it turned out that our 6 hour wait in Heathrow was a perfect length of time to allow for shopping and stocking up on last minute supplies. Our flight with Gulf Air was very pleasant, my expectations for the airline were fulfilled...nice spacious seats, effectual-yet-pleasant-though-not-over-the-top-nice staff...all very satifying -especially considering the price with Gulf Air was by far the cheapest for this route on the market by a couple of hundred pounds! Abu Dhabi airport is by far the most quizzical airport i've yet seen; from the window as the plane taxied to the terminal it was as though you were looking at a giant mud built domed house straight outta Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine, ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Palolem March 27th 2006

blog by Dave & Bronia From Chandigarh our next destination was Goa and it's famous beaches. To get to Goa we booked a cheap internal flight with www.SpiceJet.com from Delhi direct to avoid the otherwise 36+hr train ride which we didn't much fancy. We spent one last night in Delhi in another awfully noisy and grubby hotel with a small temple outside our bedroom window that began morning prayers at 5am with loud chants and the continous clanging of a very large metal bell and chimes. No need for the travel alarm that morning. We were very excited about going south in India, especially after many favourable reports from travellers we'd been meeting along the way who all spoke of a more chilled atmosphere to the north. Goa is a province of India with a coast ... read more

Well I guess I had this coming, I do tend to be a gymp in most situations. I'm having some pretty bad pains in my neck and shoulder, actually i took friday and saturday off because I was having some serious trouble lifting my right arm. Jayakumar seems a little confused about the whole thing, I told him last week that my shoulder was starting to hurt and he said, "wear a jacket in the winter season". Now first of all I do wear my fleece on my scoot to class in the morning, and secondly WINTER SEASON come on I'm Canadian for crying out loud. India in March is not exactly what I'd call winter, it's possibly warmer then most of our summer. Never fear though, I'm being as resourceful as I can possibly be, ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Rishikesh March 27th 2006

So I'm in Rishikesh and have come to work on a small Electricity project at the Swami Rama Sadhaka Gram. It is a Yoga School and not denominated with any one religion. I need to get that out because whenever someone thinks of Rishikesh, the first image that comes into your mind is Hinduism. While Rishikesh is a Hindu pilgrimage centre this ashram is a school of Yoga and doesn't limit itself to any one religion. It carries books on all faiths in its library and bookstore and its teachings are universal. Its hard to walk on the streets of Calgary and miss the numerous Yoga schools. Its become a big business lately. This ashram is pretty new (only 2 years old) and I've come here to help out. The best way to show you this ... read more
