I am leaving tonight on an overnight train to Dharamsala, home of the Dalai Lama, nestled in the Himalayan foothills. I will be there for a month or so, volunteering as an Assistant Art Therapist at Art Refuge, to work with Tibetan refugee children. This past week I have spent relaxing in Delhi, sleeping a lot, dealing with a second bout of TD (Traveller's Diarrhea -- I think I picked up a bug eating the food on the plane from Jodhpur) and enjoying the city. This was the week spring turned to summer. It literally happened overnight. One day it was warm and lovely and the next it was HOT. It is about 37 or 38 and the sun is blazing. It cools at night, but it is hot from almost first thing in the morning. ... read more

Stephanie and I took an overnight bus from Mumbai to Mapusa, Goa on the 31st of March. This was by far the stinkiest ride we have taken. (If you have not noticed, each bus ride has been an adventure and there is a story to tell). So, the stink story goes like this..... somebody urinated on the mattress in the sleeper. And, yes, that ended up being our sleeper. Let me tell you, it was not pleasant. It was least pleasant for Stephanie though since she got stuck laying in the urine. It was so hot on that bus too that sweat was dripping from my forehead, nose and ears (yes ears.. probably because of the thick hair). This only made the urine smell worse since the moist heat on the urine brought out the smell. ... read more

India really is incredible. A country of bold bright colourful saris, mouth-watering cuisine (just one more garlic naan please) and brilliant hospitality. You really do feel like a royal guest - addressed as 'madam' and greeted with smiles, flower garlands and waves everywhere you go! They say that Indians are the the Italians of Asia - which is spot on. Italians are the only other culture I've encountered with the same enthusiasm for guests, fine food and festivals. However, India also has a certain smell which grows on you - an overwhelming stench of animals, severage, people, dust, incence and exotic spices. It also has an unmatched passion for cricket and all conversations where I'm identified as Australian involve Ricky Ponting or the latest cricket score (and I can assure you that both topics are certainly ... read more

So after a month away....finally made it to a beach!!! Oh yes! Got in touch with the lads from Udaipur and met up with them on Palolem beach. All the fretting over not making Ajanta faded the moment I saw the sand and sea! Organised tickets that day and then spent the rest of the afternoon soaking up the sun and playing cricket on the beach! It's a hard life! Cricket was a good laugh...shame we lost. Glad went in more expensive seats as the crowd got a bit rowdy where some other mates were and started chucking bottles of water and food at them. Police did jack about it too, apparently found it quite funny! Having not had a proper drink in the last month, found the cheap vodka very quickly...and got pissed just sniffing ... read more

Goa We arrived at Goa with the promises of wild parties, beautiful beaches full of hot girls in bikinis and fantastic food with plenty of meat and fish. Well one out of three isn’t too bad! Goa was formally a Portuguese colony and is mainly made up of Catholics which means meat is back on the menu  The meat and fish went down a treat and was well needed after eating like a veggie for the past three weeks. We arrived here right at the end of the season thus most of the other tourists were older than my granddad! But nether the less I still had a really good time relaxing on the beaches (while Dave sleeps in typically till 3-4pm! lazy git) and watching a few live premiership games in the evening. Udaipur is the jewel of Mewar kingdom ruled by the Sisodia dynasty for 1200 years. There is a legend assocaiated with the foundation of the city. According to it, Maharana Udai Singh, the founder, was hunting one day when he met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichhola. The hermit blessed the Maharana and advised him to build a palace at this favorable located spot with a fertile valley watered by the stream, a lake, an agreeable altitude and an amphitheater of low mountains. Maharana followed the advice of the hermit and founded the city in 1559 A.D. I would love to say we planned to see the Mewar Festival in Udaipur but obviously as it was Irene and I, we were lucky enough for out time in Udaipur to coincide with ... read more

Ahoy ahoy once again. Sorry about the lack of updates recently, it's just Sandi and I have settled into our own cozy nook of a place. As you can see I'm no longer in Benaulim, I am in Palolem! Another pretty sweet beach. This one is alot more populated with tourists, so Sandi and I don't get as many bad looks as we have been. There's alot more activities to do here than in Benaulim. Every once in a while Sandi and I take up a nice soothing (and physically exausting) canoe ride on the Arabian Sea. The people who rent out the canoe charge too much (roughly $10 per hour) so we've laid off of renting it for a bit. Currently we're in the bartering stages for it, we're trying to get it for 5 ... read more

I arrived in Bangalore March 20th around 12:30AM. Flight was fine, but long. Once I finished the first 9 hours, boarded another flight in Frankfurt for another 8 &1/2 hours! Kelly, VP of the Bangalore office picked me up at the airport. The guest apartment I was supposed to be staying at did not have any openings. The rental agent took us to another apartment that seemed to be in the middle of nowhere to me! My bags were taken to a rear bedroom, and the agent showed us the rest of the apartment. Kelly opened a closed door to one of the other bedrooms (there were 3) and noticed people sleeping! By now it's about 1:30AM. The agent then proceeded to tell us there were people in the other bedroom as well. I thought to ... read more

Foremost a big Hello to everyone reading this and thanks to all! Emma and I are astounded by the interest so many people have shown in response to this little blog. Since the last entry we ditched the idea of the 24 luxuriant hours on the houseboat 'cause a) it costs a fortune, and b) the reality of 24 hours on a small open air boat (insects!) & no A/C set in and so we opted for another option to get from Varkala to Allepey which involved a taxi to Kollam and taking the Tourist Ferry Cruise upriver. It follows the exact same path as the expensive tour but is with other travellers (in our case about 25 others), only takes 8 hours (in daylight, i.e. no insects!), and is a tenth of the price! Arrived in Bangalore from Hampi at about 7 in the morning, desperate to get back to civilisation and a big city. Meaning that it was a real shame that I arrived in Bangalore. It would probably be a nice place to live, actually - clean, fairly modern, lots of shops. As a place to visit, though, it's pretty underwhelming. Bland. No personality whatsoever. And notably less smiley than most other places I've visited in India. That said, the Lalbagh Gardens were very nice - big municipal gardens with thousands of different plants from all over the world. And the tiffin house just down from my hotel did the best dosas I've had since arriving in India - absolutely spectacularly good. And, for that matter, the best grape juice I've had in India. Actually, as an aside, ... read more
