Hello! I arrived in Darjeeling on Saturday. After arriving in New Jalpaiguri train station we got a four wheel drive to Darjeeling. It was a 3 hours drive up hill the whole way passing through gorgeous scenery. Unfortunatley we had 2 rather large people sitting next to us taking up 3/4 of the seat! The temperature in Darjeeling is lovely. It's a bit like the weather at home IF we get a summer! We're staying in Andy's guest house which is spotlessly clean (makes a nice change). Unfortunately we had to move room this morning as the room we had was booked so now we don't have a shower, just a good old fashioned bucket to use for showering (I feel like I'm back in the Sandwell hospital accommodation!). Darjeeling is going crazy as tonight is ... read more

We left Kathmandu the day before yesterday, and started our long and arduous journey to Darjeeling. Our bus left at "4:00" (read: 5:45 Indian time) and stopped at every single little place for the first few hours. Getting out of the Kathmandu Valley alone took two hours (it's really not that big). Once it got dark, we didn't stop at as many places, but then again it's hard to stop when you are winding through the mountains at death defying speeds. Not that we were worried or anything... Yet again, David didn't fit on the bus (Heidi was even a little squished) so it was an interesting night of banging knees and sleeping half in the aisle. Sleep was a little hard to come by, surprise surprise. We finally arrived in Kakarvitta which is the border ... read more

India and Nepal Sally Evers & Nick Griffith The lure of spotting tigers in the wild was the draw to Ranthambore National Park, just a few hours from Jaipur by train. Ranthambore is supposed to be one of the best places in India to see Tigers in the wild and we were not disappointed! Our arrival meant we could do a safari that same afternoon, despite the truck arriving a little late we got to the park and started the search. Ranthambore is an old Maharajas hunting area and is overlooked by another amazing fort and has various lodges and ruins around the park. The old hunting lodge is now lived in by the "Lady of the Lake" - resident tiger and her 3 cubs. Quite ironic really. We saw the tigers from accross the lake ... read more

After 23 hours on bus and jeep we finally got to Darjeeling from Katmandhu. The first day the town was totally obliterated by cloud. We drank tea. The second day there was a crippling national strike and absolutely nothing was open. It also rained. We played scrabble. Today we finally managed to get bus tickets to leave this wonderful place. We are going to Calcutta, where there are cyclone warnings.... read more

Geo: 22.8369, 87.8906WB - KURESOENG, DARJEELING 1st May - 4th May 2007So got overnight train at 10pm on 30th May from Sealdah Station Calcutta to NJP station in Siliguri, Darjeeling. Then its a 2.5 hour up hairpin bends of the himalayan foothills to Darjeeling and an hour short of it is Kureseong where we stayed in the lovely Cochrane Place (not in the Lonely Planet either see www.imperialchai.com). We arrived at Silguri station at 7.52am on the mail train from Calcutta which was 8 mins early and the overnight part was grand, if you book 2nd class A/C you get sheets and pillow and blankets (Lonely Planet says you don't, also they don't mention there actually 1st class too). There was an Indian wedding party in the whole carriage and us whiteys but unlike if this ... read more

2550 years ago, Prince Siddhartha Gautama became enlightened under a Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya and became the Buddha... After that he went to Sarnath and gave his first sermon on how to free yourself from suffering... Buddhism was born... Well not that I feel the need to free myself from suffering, because I don't think I suffer that much, but following in the footsteps of the Buddha, I went to Sarnath and Bodhgaya to be enlightened myself... As both villages have a lot of Buddhist monks from around the world and even more Buddhist tourists, they don't feel much like India... And because they are small they are like a breath of fresh air after the hustle and bustle of Varanasi and the other big cities I was in... So I sat under the Bodhi tree ... read more

We were going to call this blog 'Throwing up on Everest' to get a few more hits, but really this was just us feeling bitter because we hadn't actually seen Everest and were heavily pissed off. To see The Mighty One, we'd gone up 'Tiger Hill' at 4am (4am!) on the first viable clear morning that was offered to us by whichever God that doesn't exist because if he did then we would have seen Everest. We were accompanied by every other person in India or so it seemed, and we sat, perched in ascending order up a building according to how much you paid for your ticket. We chose the Super Deluxe room which was of course at the top, just above the Deluxe room. We waited for about 45 minutes before the sun came ... read more

India - Delhi, Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Darjeeling Left Delhi for Varanasi, train was delayed by 7 hours - something we have become acustomed to! Varanasi was cool, nice hotel, did a boat trip along the Ganges - saw the famous ghats including the 2 cremation ghats and we actually saw a body being burned right in front of us - pretty morbid! Saw some other sights along the way - people bathing and even drinking ganges water and knowing the Ganges is filled with all kinds of sewage and loads of dead bodies, its pretty interesting to see!! From Varanasi we headed to Bodhgaya via Gaya and including another 2 very delayed train journeys. Sleeper trains by the way are very comfy and are just about big enough for me sleep in which surprised me, given the ... read more

Veranasi's train station is a 45 minute ride out of town. When I arrived and looked around, there was not another tourist in sight. Next door to the station was a local little dive serving up lentil dahl bhat. I took my chances and sat down to a steaming hot meal amidst flies and the usual stares. The friendly staff sent a boy out to find me a coke. He came back with a rare icy-cold bottle. After ten months, I had decided to leave behind my trusty back-saving cart. The prospect of rolling it through the feces-covered streets or lugging it up several flights of station stairs was too much. It had been my friend, but the time had come to part with the cart. My pack is lighter and much of what I ... read more

Oups. Malaise. C’est un cortège funèbre. On arrive enfin à Darjeeling. Je suis heureux d’y arriver en un seul morceau. La ville est populeuse, polluée, touristique et incroyablement serrée. ... read more
