I think it's only right that before I continue I mention my journey from Kathmandu to darjeeling which was... interesting. It took nearly two days and the whole journey passed some spectacular scenery (no pics sadly) of canyons with rivers, vast open flood plains and tea plantations in the early morning mist. It's not uncommon to see the odd vehicle that has gone off the road in these places but not long after starting the journey I had already seen a bus and a lorry that had collided head on with each other and another lorry that was on its side and narrowly missed going off the edge of a bridge! Later in the evening we passed what I could swear was rows of dead bodies under sheets which I can only guess was from another ... read more

My adventures brought me to the chilly northern parts of India—in Darjeeling (West Bengal) and the eastern parts of Sikkim. Darjeeling is known for its tea, and while driving up the hills we passed loads of tea plantations. There is definitely a strong English influence, as it was the summer retreat for the British officials in the early 19th century. It’s also known for its beautiful views of Mt. Khangchendzonga in Sikkim (8598 m), which is the third highest peak. The drive up was literally 4 hours of “bend after bend” but the view around one of those curves made it completely worth it. The base of the Mt. Khangchendzonga was almost the color of the sky so that the snow covered peaks looked like they were coming down from the heavens!! Though Darjeeling is in ... read more

After the roasting hot temperatures we were used to in the plains of India, Darjeeling was cold. Not only that but everyone in town had a cold! We also picked up colds and coughs, which lasted for about two weeks. Darjeeling has a beautiful setting, surrounded by mountains and forests. We arrived during the festival of Durga Puja, which is a local holiday and we struggled to find a room for the night. We ended up in the government run tourist lodge. We had a cavernous room which was dull and stunk of mustiness, although it was clean. The meals were inclusive and there was no choice. The food was quite good though, and we were given a Western-style breakfast. The next day we checked out and found a very cheap and clean room at Andy's ... read more

The Indian Railway system is amazing in as much as you can book tickets over the Internet in Britain (or anywhere else) which is what we did for the train journeys throughout our trip in India. When you arrive at the platform to wait for your train, miraculously your name is printed out with details of your coach and seat number and pinned to a notice board, and when the train turns up, again your name is attached to the outside of your particular coach. Denise was somewhat taken aback to find that her age was also printed out for all to see! From Kolkata (Calcutta) we headed north to the Himalayas and to the old colonial Hill Station of Darjeeling, home to some of the best tea in the world. I (Gerry) was particularly keen ... read more

When we arrived in Darjeeling it was getting dark, but the map in the Rough Guide seemed to indicate it would be quite close to walk to the Tibetan Guesthouse near the TV tower, checking places on the way - Wrong! We walked up quite steep hills for quite a while and the guesthouses we saw on the way were full. It turned out that we couldn't find the place, but it was a lot higher up the hill and we ended up staying at a Indian hotel for the night. The hot shower was nice, and they even brought some food to our room, but I felt a little strange with my dirty pack and travel clothes. We checked out the next morning into the dorm at the Tibetan place. Darjeeling was quite a lot ... read more

So, we can see our breath in our room and my toothpaste is frozen. Darjeeling, this lovely old city built into the side of a hill, is still nicer than almost anywhere in the south. Reason 1. The people are obviously not as hung-up about tourists. 2. The women are more approachable and some even wear PANTS and have shorter hair. By far, there are fewer hassles but there's still that Indian beaurocracy which sent us back and forth between 2 offices, 3 km apart, for our Sikkim permits (if they're free, why do we even need them?) What a treat to see the peaks of some of the Himalayas! Early morning, some of the mist cleared and the snowy points were there, disembodied and floating over the city like a cloud bank. Awesome! And there's ... read more
