Happy autumn! We are a bit soggy in Darjeeling. It is still the tail end of the monsoon and so pours a few times a day and we are lost in the fog much of the rest of the time. The 24 hour journey to India was hard on the body! Arriving in Kolkata at 2 am was okay. In fact, relatively quiet and not as hot as it could have been. The hotel room was vile, however, and unfortunately for Matt, once the city woke up around 6 or 7 am, I was done with sleep. We booked an overnight train ticket for that night and spent the day getting oriented and taking in the "sites" of Kolkata. Not much to see - a crowded, dirty, steamy Indian city. We made our way to the ... read more

We have been pretty busy in the last ten days so we have not had much time to update our blog. We are continuing with the training and meeting adults and children alike. We have been involved in lots of social activities as well so sit back and relax. We hope you enjoy reading; Day 28 - Tuesday 26 August Philip is feeling extremely unwell and has had a terrible night. Tight pains in his chest and has a dreadful cough but despite this he insists on taking the session. I have to step in at one point as Philip’s voice almost disappears. Today I should have gone with Philip to town to pick up my kurta but instead we return to Ahava. While Philip sleeps (for four hours - unheard of) I get on with ... read more

... read more

Day 22 - Wednesday 20 August Another day, another training session which goes well. The material seems to be going down better with participants as the week goes on. After the session Juren takes us into town to stock up on essential supplies. Additionally we pop into a dress shop and Eleanor invests in her first Kurta. The material is lovely and the shopkeeper pops out and brings in the tailor from a few doors down who measures Eleanor. The outfit will be ready in six days. The three piece set will cost about £13.50! Day 23 - Thursday 21 August More training today. Round 4 of the first session again goes quite well. In the evening we meet the local committee and have dinner at David’s home. We meet a very interesting group of people ... read more

Hello again from Kalimpong. Here is an update of our daily log. We have nearly caught up with the backlog of entries and will probably reduce the size our despatches; otherwise we will have nothing to talk about when we get back. The weather appears to be changing as the monsoon season is coming to an end. We cannot wait for the view of the Himalayas from our bedroom window. In the meantime here is a shot taken last week when the clouds receded from Kanchenjunga for a few moments. We hope you enjoy reading. Day 15 - Wednesday 13 August 2008 After breakfast it’s up to our office to continue preparing material for the Cottage Parents training sessions. We also drafted an outline programme for the teachers based on some of the material we will ... read more

Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed the first instalment. We are doing our best to catch up and hope you enjoy reading about our continuing experiences in India. Day 6 - Tuesday 5 August 2008 We met this morning with Ruth Glashan, Superintendent of the girls’ cottages and staff, in which we have sketched out an approach to the work with the cottage staff. Each cottage houses up to 45 children of varying ages and the job looks particularly daunting. We hope to begin the training with this group. They appear very much like residential care staff in the UK and appear to be really keen to develop their knowledge and skills. We hope we will not let them down. In the afternoon we took tea with Mrs Hishey, the Chair of the Local Advisory Committee. She ... read more

Sorry for the long delay. We have only just received a USB receiver for the laptop so that we can communicate. While we have been here we have been keeping a journal so here is the first edited section covering 5 days. More to come later. Thank you to everyone who has sent us messages; we will respond individually shortly. This is an amazing place and we are having a great time as we hope the next bit will demonstrate: Day 1 - Thursday 31 July 2008 Flying by the seat of our pants, like Fred Karno’s Circus, we set off for Glasgow Airport complete with our luggage, some of Katie’s belongings and Oscar complete with bed and three days food supply (for Oscar)! Straightforward enough but en route Eleanor stopped off at her hairdresser in ... read more

So, why do I love India This is our third time in India; we first toured Rajasthan with our 2 daughters; then South India, travelling from Chennai to Cochine; and finally the foothills of the Himalaya. My wife's main objection is the food that is too spicy for her. Previously this has been less of a problem but on this trip most of our fellow travelling companions have been Indian, and accordingly the food has been more for the Indian palate. Hence Alison has had a real problem with the diet. The other problem from her point of view is the poverty that we see but this is less in evidence here than previously. We have enjoyed Sikkim. The forests here have consisted of teak, saal, magnolia, rhododendron, ashoka, and bamboo. The teak and saal are ... read more
