When we left Kalimpong we said that we would be in touch when we reached Kerala if we could get an internet connection. Well our trusty Tata Indicom Dialler works here as well and so this is the last post in the blog before we set off for home on Monday. If you have been reading the blog from the start you will have seen that we have experienced so much in what in reality is quite a short time. While we have been living the adventure however we have at times thought that it would never end. We have at times been ready to chuck it all in and return. This was mainly in the dark (literally) days of the monsoon when we hardly saw sun amid the mist and rain for several weeks at ... read more

So going home day has finally arrived as the first batch of children and young people left in a fleet of buses for the station at NJP to catch the Darjeeling Express overnight to Kolkata. This was an emotional morning with children in tears as they took leave of friends and cottage parents. The emotion is understandable when we consider that these children spend the best part of a year here living, learning and playing together in this amazing institution. We enjoyed talking with lots of youngsters today including some seniors leaving for the final time after 12 years at Dr Graham’s. Yesterday evening saw the end of term marked with a candlelight service in the chapel and then everyone went off to finish packing their boxes for the journey home. Last week has been action ... read more

The last time we posted an entry we said that we were getting close to going home time. We are now surrounded by Going Home Day Flowers blooming all over the estate. This is the name given by the children to the poinsettias which grow as trees here and are laden with lovely big bright red flowers. They get the name because their arrival indicates that the time for going home for the holidays is approaching. We have not done any travelling since last time as we have been busy trying to complete the work of the project. Now all that remains to be done is the completion of the management report which we will present to the Board in Kolkata in two weeks time. Then it’s off to Kerala for some sunshine. We are getting ... read more

We told you last time that we were off to look at wildlife at Jaldapara. Now we are back here is an extract from our journal covering a diverse and very entertaining trip. We hope you enjoy it. Day 95 - Wednesday 29 November We set off for Jaldapara driven by Banu. Banu was the first member of staff at DGH we met when he collected us at the airport on arrival. On the way we stop at Kalimpong to buy paracetamol and a few essential items of chocolate and while we are in the shops Banu picks up his brother, allegedly, and he acts as co-driver to Jaldapara. Getting anywhere in India by road is tortuous and no less so from Kalimpong to Jaldapara. The roads are okay once we get down from the ... read more

October 28th 2008

Hi everyone. We have now finished the entire training programme for staff at DGH. Since being here we have delivered 32 separate training modules to cottage staff, teachers and heads of departments. Everyone has had a taste of a training style which is pretty alien to them and it has taken us many weeks to get colleagues to call us by our first names rather than Sir or Ma’am. The feedback is all very positive and we just hope that everyone is not simply being polite. There remains a two day management workshop for the senior management team due to take place on 5 and 6 November and the training and development part of the programme will be complete. The weather here has been wonderful for the past 2 weeks with warm sunshine during the day ... read more

Last time we told you we were going to Sikkim. Well now we have returned after a great trip. We hope you enjoy this account of our travels. We have reverted to our previous format of daily extracts from our journal so it is a bit longer again. Our apologies for this. We would also like to thank the people who have sent messages to us. It is great to hear from you all. Hopefully, everybody on our original list of 60 people should be able to access the blog after some tweaking by us. So here goes: Day 73 - Monday 7 September We get up early to pack for our trip to Sikkim. Neelam arrives as we are having breakfast and then has something to eat himself. He and the driver have come from ... read more

In the past few days we have continued to keep busy doing work around the school with both staff and young people. With the birthday celebrations over the visitors from around the world have returned home. Our new found Aussie friends have departed and the guest house has become quiet again. Except that is for four members of the Japanese Committee who have been visiting the school to inspect the greenhouse and visit nearby farms where Japanese rice is being cultivated under experimental conditions. The aim of the project is to increase the yield per field and it appears that this is being achieved. Before our Australian friends left they took 117 children on a picnic beside the River Rilly near Kalimpong. The day was a great success although we did not arrive until the afternoon ... read more

Since the last time we wrote there has indeed been lots of activity. We would have been in touch sooner only our USB pin ran out of credit and we have had some difficulty getting it recharged. Thanks to everyone who has written sending good wishes and thoughts. We really do appreciate the fact that so many people are thinking about us. Well, the Birthday celebrations have come and gone. The Homes celebrated 108 years of service to children over a period of 5 days culminating in a big bash in the hall and on the field with buns, julibees and sweet, milky tea for everyone. The pupils and adults all had a great time. There were lots of guests including Nigel Graham, grandson of the founder and Jennie Chapman, the founder’s great granddaughter. There were ... read more

We have been pretty busy in the last ten days so we have not had much time to update our blog. We are continuing with the training and meeting adults and children alike. We have been involved in lots of social activities as well so sit back and relax. We hope you enjoy reading; Day 28 - Tuesday 26 August Philip is feeling extremely unwell and has had a terrible night. Tight pains in his chest and has a dreadful cough but despite this he insists on taking the session. I have to step in at one point as Philip’s voice almost disappears. Today I should have gone with Philip to town to pick up my kurta but instead we return to Ahava. While Philip sleeps (for four hours - unheard of) I get on with ... read more

Day 22 - Wednesday 20 August Another day, another training session which goes well. The material seems to be going down better with participants as the week goes on. After the session Juren takes us into town to stock up on essential supplies. Additionally we pop into a dress shop and Eleanor invests in her first Kurta. The material is lovely and the shopkeeper pops out and brings in the tailor from a few doors down who measures Eleanor. The outfit will be ready in six days. The three piece set will cost about £13.50! Day 23 - Thursday 21 August More training today. Round 4 of the first session again goes quite well. In the evening we meet the local committee and have dinner at David’s home. We meet a very interesting group of people ... read more
