So going home day has finally arrived as the first batch of children and young people left in a fleet of buses for the station at NJP to catch the Darjeeling Express overnight to Kolkata. This was an emotional morning with children in tears as they took leave of friends and cottage parents. The emotion is understandable when we consider that these children spend the best part of a year here living, learning and playing together in this amazing institution. We enjoyed talking with lots of youngsters today including some seniors leaving for the final time after 12 years at Dr Graham’s. Yesterday evening saw the end of term marked with a candlelight service in the chapel and then everyone went off to finish packing their boxes for the journey home. Last week has been action ... read more

The last time we posted an entry we said that we were getting close to going home time. We are now surrounded by Going Home Day Flowers blooming all over the estate. This is the name given by the children to the poinsettias which grow as trees here and are laden with lovely big bright red flowers. They get the name because their arrival indicates that the time for going home for the holidays is approaching. We have not done any travelling since last time as we have been busy trying to complete the work of the project. Now all that remains to be done is the completion of the management report which we will present to the Board in Kolkata in two weeks time. Then it’s off to Kerala for some sunshine. We are getting ... read more

Hi everyone. We have now finished the entire training programme for staff at DGH. Since being here we have delivered 32 separate training modules to cottage staff, teachers and heads of departments. Everyone has had a taste of a training style which is pretty alien to them and it has taken us many weeks to get colleagues to call us by our first names rather than Sir or Ma’am. The feedback is all very positive and we just hope that everyone is not simply being polite. There remains a two day management workshop for the senior management team due to take place on 5 and 6 November and the training and development part of the programme will be complete. The weather here has been wonderful for the past 2 weeks with warm sunshine during the day ... read more

Tourists attacked with iron rods and choppers. Was a particularly heavy statement we came across in the West Bengal Telegraph under a leading article entitled "The Hills on the brink of flare up". Darjeeling, in the North of the state rests in the Himalayas. It is famous for its tea, and more notably, for its Gurkhas with 95% of the surrounding population being this distinct, proud race, originally from Nepal who gave us sherpas such as Tenzing Norgay (joint first on Everest) and a formidable fighting force alongside the British in WW2. But they were also apparently responsible for bricking tourist buses and injuring elderly tourists with choppers. hmmm. We bit the bullet and decided getting bludgeoned by iron rods was a one-off mistake back in June, and that they actually love the tourists. This, luckily, ... read more

Incredibly, it’s been four weeks since last I wrote about the particularities of my world; definitely time for a catch up me thinks. I’m pleased to say that I’ve been too busy having fun… apart from a three-day wobble, but let’s not go there just now! Where I left off last time was just before Puja, but it was also just before my leaving do. Rose and I had a joint leaving party and we were lucky enough to be joined by our very lovely VSO friends from Bhubaneshwar. On the Saturday night we ate out, went for some cheap drinks at a rather funky bar I know called Dolce Vita and then went and danced our socks off with all the beautiful people at Roxy’s. It was in fact a very special shake-your-groove-thing fest. We ... read more

In the past few days we have continued to keep busy doing work around the school with both staff and young people. With the birthday celebrations over the visitors from around the world have returned home. Our new found Aussie friends have departed and the guest house has become quiet again. Except that is for four members of the Japanese Committee who have been visiting the school to inspect the greenhouse and visit nearby farms where Japanese rice is being cultivated under experimental conditions. The aim of the project is to increase the yield per field and it appears that this is being achieved. Before our Australian friends left they took 117 children on a picnic beside the River Rilly near Kalimpong. The day was a great success although we did not arrive until the afternoon ... read more

Since the last time we wrote there has indeed been lots of activity. We would have been in touch sooner only our USB pin ran out of credit and we have had some difficulty getting it recharged. Thanks to everyone who has written sending good wishes and thoughts. We really do appreciate the fact that so many people are thinking about us. Well, the Birthday celebrations have come and gone. The Homes celebrated 108 years of service to children over a period of 5 days culminating in a big bash in the hall and on the field with buns, julibees and sweet, milky tea for everyone. The pupils and adults all had a great time. There were lots of guests including Nigel Graham, grandson of the founder and Jennie Chapman, the founder’s great granddaughter. There were ... read more

We spent a few damp days in Darjeeling. It was the tail end of the monsoon season--damp beds and damp clothes, nothing ever dries completely! But we did enjoy the relatively cool temperature. The people of Darjeeling were wonderfully friendly. The landscape and the feel of the place is distinctly different from the rest of India. Most of the locals speak Nepaliese and want the greater Darjeeling region to become a separate state from West Bengal called Ghorkaland. There are also strong Tibetan influences at the restaurants and monastaries. Enjoying the food and the tea plantations, we explored the area by foot. We even got some clear skies and mountain views of Khangchendzonga, India's highest peak. Having a blast. Hope all is well. ... read more
