I'm living in Kolkata (Calcutta) which is pretty much at the bottom of West Bengal.
Welcome To West Bengal!... via my eyes and ears, a few neurons in my struggling brain, an Internet cafe and the wonders of cyberspace. I've got a 2-year mission, should I accept it, to help nurture joy and stength within the HIV+ community of West Bengal, to learn from them and hopefully to share some of my own skills...
I'll be living and working in Kolkata (formally known as Calcutta), but will also be working throughout the state of West Bengal. I will be working through VSO, who are a development charity with almost 1,500 skilled professionals currently volunteering in 34 countries. The organisation I will be working with is an umbrella organsiation for networks of people living with HIV throughout the state. These networks aim to work towards improved life chances and life experience for all people living with HIV in West Bengal. Positive people working for positive change for other positive people. Sounds great to me! My role is to work with the staff of the umbrella organisation in terms of their proffessional development. It being a small under-funded organsiation, I also hope to be able to do some much broader work on developing service provision, but we'll see.. fundamentally it depends on the needs I find when I arrive.
I'm hugely excited about the professional challenge ahead, not least because it necesitates me learning Bengali which I think is very cool. I'm also however, blown away by the enormity of the personal challenge. Bizarrely, on some days it feels like more of the same, after all, I've moved to new cities and had to remold my life on plenty of occasions before, but of course, there are numerous reasons why this will be something much bigger and scarier - the language; the distance from home and you gorgeous people; a modest income; different and potentially challenging working practices; cultural nuances; extreme humidity; a whole set of unfamiliar and potentially dodgy creatures, from bacteria to crocodiles; and not least, a very different set of societal norms around status, rights and opportunity - to name but a few. Having said all that, I am very much aware that everyone of those things is also, and indeed predominantly, a wonderful thing providing a multitude of gorgeous experiences just waiting to happen. Hurrah!
Welcome to the next chapter of my life!

Bibi-Qa-Maqbara, Aurangabad
Bibi-Qa-Maqbara, Aurangabad
It was built be the son of Shah Jahan, the guy who built the Taj Mahal - can you see the resemblance? The son is also the guy after whom Aurangabad is named.
Such a shame I got so sucked in to Rajasthan. Having now left it 3 weeks ago, I can completely see how stifling and stressful it is there, hindsight is a wonderful thing. Happily, ever since the day I began my journey South, I’ve been smiling like a mad boy and loving every minute - well, with two minor exceptions, but I’ll get to that later! So, in order to delay my trip to Mumbai as promised, my first port of call was Aurangabad, a very long way from anywhere, in Maharastra State. As soon as I arrived there, it was [View Full Entry]

Where did December come from? No one warned me it was coming! How rude! It’s just odd to picture Europe and all its grey splendour right now as I’ve been roasting in the desert for the past two weeks. Having said that however, today it’s raining; very unseasonal and really not appreciated! It makes me chuckle actually because for so many years now I’ve been out on the streets of the West Country doing some random World AIDS Day event in the pouring rain (it ALWAYS rained) and now I’m in the desert, it’s 30 degrees and months away from rainy [View Full Entry]

Moving on from Pelling really wasn’t as easy as you’d hope - ‘You can check out but you can never leave’. I made the classic faux pas of trying to travel between towns on a national holiday and as is the way here, the holiday spewed itself over into subsequent days becoming a period of enforced dormancy. All very happy if you’re somewhere you intend to be, but Pelling is a dead town which doesn’t so much as draw you in, as sit on you. As is the way though, once you’ve realised that the one jeep passing through town that [View Full Entry]

Rose and Michelle... VERY happy.
Incredibly, it’s been four weeks since last I wrote about the particularities of my world; definitely time for a catch up me thinks. I’m pleased to say that I’ve been too busy having fun… apart from a three-day wobble, but let’s not go there just now! Where I left off last time was just before Puja, but it was also just before my leaving do. Rose and I had a joint leaving party and we were lucky enough to be joined by our very lovely VSO friends from Bhubaneshwar. On the Saturday night we ate out, went for some cheap drinks [View Full Entry]

And wasn’t it just! ‘Special’ that is. Durga Puja; 5th - 9th Oct 2008. This blog will deliberately be mostly pictures as such a spectacle is difficult to describe in any other way. Comparisons to Christmas in the West are made regularly with Durga Puja, but I personally think this is to short change this amazing Hindu fest, particularly the way it is done in Kolkata, the home of Durga Puja. Kolkata is one of the few places left in India that still goes in for Goddess worship and so Goddess Durga’s big day becomes a week long party on the [View Full Entry]

So lets get the dull stuff out of the way; the BNP+ AGM was as fruitless as expected. Well that’s not completely true I guess, there was some fruit, but it was decidedly sour. Ultimately though, little has changed at work now that the new board are in place, if anything, the even weaker leadership has led to even less happening. This doesn’t disappoint me as it’s nothing worse than expected, but it does hurt to think about the lack of support that all those amazing people on the ground are getting. Since the AGM, I have to say that I [View Full Entry]

‘The time is now’; a pearl of wisdom grooved by Moloko and a doctrine which lies very close to my heart, though doesn’t always sit so well in my head. Last week head and heart were united in their conviction and so I ‘gave myself unto the moment’. What I’m leading up to telling you in my typically convoluted way, is that I‘ve finally quit my placement. I won’t go on again about why, I’m sure I’ve written more than enough about the problems I’ve been facing. I’ve now given the additional month that I promised VSO last time [View Full Entry]

Can't remember if you've seen this one already or not, but its a classic. THE Kolkata tourist attraction.
So, August. Well that was that I guess; we’re a few bombs, an impeachment and an Olympics Games ‘richer’, but here in Thakurpukur, the world is a little less hard-nosed and really there is thankfully very little drama to talk about. I guess there comes a point, and indeed that point has come, when things become very ‘everyday’. I suppose what I’m saying is that what follows is very likely to be a bit ‘dear diary’ and somewhat lacking in revolution, but I’m hoping I’ll be forgiven. For a couple of reasons, this month has absolutely [View Full Entry]

Inline with my newfound smiliness, I’ve been thinking about the things in India that I love - well, ‘really enjoy’ at least. I don’t love India; I haven’t fallen for it as I was hoping to or indeed as so many people do, though I’m yet to really travel around and India is a vast place with a multitude of cultures, so I’m reserving judgment. In the meantime, my smiles have been derived from the most unexpected of sources. Number one on my list has to be the big blue and yellow buses which I attached a photo of last time. Sorry, for lack of pictures again. At the risk of speaking too soon, I feel like I may finally have turned a corner in this past week. Everyone has been saying for months now that I just have to get over the hideous settling in period at the beginning and all will be shiny and gorgeous - I’ve not found this easy to hear and have found it even harder to believe. However, for whatever reason, I am now feeling more positive, generally at ease and I continue to be very comfortable. Work is still a major concern, but outside of [View Full Entry]
