I should be either transcribing audio files of interviews with students with disabilities into Word documents or writing up fieldnotes. But, I’m just missing my guide dog terribly right now. So, I thought I would write about it. As those of you who have been reading my posts since the beginning know, I decided to leave Jill, my Seeing Eye German Shepherd, at my dad’s house while I came to Hong Kong. I explained some of the reasons in my blog earlier. So, I’ll not recount them here. I anticipated that I would miss Jill a lot. I’m here with no family and only newly-made friends. I’m not used to sleeping alone. While in the States I would call Jill up onto my bed - a Seeing Eye “no no” - and she would lay on ... read more

These are a few pictures of our first visit to Lantau Island in november 2005. It takes about a 50 minute ride by ferry from the pier of Hong Kong to Discovery Bay. Then take the bus to the manastery Po Lin. It is the largest outside Buddha statue in the world. The surroundings are great, beautiful scenic nature. In the monastery you can eat e perfect vegatarian lunch for about 10 euro's each. This entry is for us a test, because we now try to enter some pictures. See you. Monkey and Bear... read more

this happened last week of november 2005. i got a free ticket for hongkong from my mileage points. since i couldn't find anyone to join me, i went alone. i was very nervous since it will be my first time to tour a country on my own for several days (i toured new york's times st alone before but that was just for a day!). anyway, i researched about hongkong thru the 'net. made itinerary... what to visit, how to get there, etc etc. that itinerary made me calm as my trip came nearer.... fortunately, on my first night, i met david (also a traveller from new zealand). he became for travel buddy for hongkong. he was my ideal travel buddy... basically i just told him what we should visit and he was the one in ... read more

Well since my last installments lots has happend. I enjoyed New Year. We went for a meal and then to a roof top bar which was good. I was able to see across the town so saw all the fireworksbeen set off, very nice, especially with the back drop of the limestone hills. Although there were some slight embarassing English lads there, nothing to do with me or my group, it was funny to see one puking his guts later. The next day was petty cool, the weather was gorgeous, about 20 degrees and I learnt Kung Fu. A group of us went to a Kung Fu school and were taught the basics of Sholin Kung Fu. When I say basics I mean about 10 moves, but it was pretty difficult to master, but I did ... read more

1st Feb. Well we have arrived in Hong Kong. Transport from the airport by express train is very quick, about 25 minutes to a bus station where courtesy buses take you to your hotel. Simple but not cheap. Day one - Hotel was much better than expected, with incredible view across harbour (better without the pollution). Ventured out to find something to eat. Were spoilt for choice but picked one nearby which was popular with the locals (they were queuing when we left). Back in time to see the light show across the harbour from hotel room window and then to sleep (at 8.30pm) 2nd Feb. Took the ferry to HK island -very busy. They still have trams which must date back to 20’s or 30’s. They are electric and pollution free within the city, though ... read more

Comfort foods On Tuesday Dr. Lian brought me McDonald’s for lunch at my office! I ate a Big Mac and some fries! It was so good to eat something completely familiar. The sandwich was smaller, and less fries were in the box. The food and lifestyle here are so much more healthy - a very good and needed change for me. Finding common ground That night, Dr. Lian, Kuo-Hsin, his daughter, and I took the MTR to his friends’ Karen and Terrance’s home. They live in the New Territories too. To get there, we had to take a KCR train as well as the MTR. KCR stands for Kowloon Chinese Rail, and it is a train similar to commuter trains in the U.S. and Europe. At Karen and Terrance’s house I had one of my most ... read more

Mushy Mushy? Chinese new year lasts all week and today we made the mistake of visiting a theme park called ocean park! This was probably the busiest day of the year to go and definitely the worst. The layout of the park was impressive, built on a steep hillside with views looking over the bay. The rollercoasters hung over the cliff edge as if it was contemplating suicide and the views fantastic. The only way through the park was via esculators or cable car which ended up being the worst design for a shed load of people. The rides we went on were great but it took usw forever to get out of the park being squeezed into a bottleneck alleyway with nowhere to go - more claustraphobic the cu chu tunnels! Once we squeezed ... read more
