We arrived safely in Hong Kong after 19 hours on the plane. Somewhere along the way, we lost December 30th! Despite our large amounts of luggage, everything arrived and we were quickly transported to our hotel. It was really strange to see poinsettias growing in the same pots as palm trees and Christmas trees basking in 20 degree sun! After an afternoon snooze to try to get through the jet lag, New Year's Eve consisted of shopping on Canton Road (new video camera!), walking through Kowloon Park (there is green grass in Hong Kong!) and the Star Ferry countdown cruise on the harbour. The lights are absolutely incredible - whole office towers decked out in animated light shows. Despite the millions of people gathered along the harbour's edge for the celebrations, we managed to make our ... read more

Hong Kong is such a vibrant city with a tonne of stuff going on. I was very excited by the hairdryer in the hotel after such a long time without one (& the general hotelness). I was even more pleased with the whole Christmassy potential of Santa Village & the harbour lights show (cf. the lack of Christmas cheer in Bangkok). So here is a list of fab stuff we did in Hong Kong & the New Territories: *Museum of Art; splendid views, excellent modern exhibition & section explaining Chinese symbolism. *Avenue of stars; handprints of the stars including Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh & Chow Yun Fat. *Hong Kong Park; right in the heart of the city with lakes, carp, terrapins, lots of wedding parties, waterfalls, lookout, tai chi garden & an aviary! *Victoria peak & ... read more

We had decided that getting the train to the airport was a good idea as we were pleased with previous journeys. This train journey was a little different. We waited on the platform for the train which was only 10 minutes late, which was fine as we had several hours to spare. There was lots of people but that was Ok as it was a terminal station so the train would be empty. What we didn't count on was that everyone including ourselves had third class tickets. We got onto a second class coach & moved down the train to the last third class carriage which was already full & we just managed to squeeze into a space in the the aisle. Although an express train it seemed to stop at every rinky dink station & ... read more

I found Hong Kong a wonderful city. A contrasting mix of high class designer shops next to Chinese street markets and traditional shops including doctors surgeries open to the street with little more than a curtain for privacy and shelves of potions on display. Getting accommodation was hard as everywhere seemed to be full of politicians or protestors at the WTO convention. I managed to get rooms at the YMCA and then the YWCA. As soon as I landed and left my bags I rushed to the Indian High Commission to get my visa as it was touch and go if I would get it on time for my flight to India a few days later. This was the start of Indian bureacracy - one queue to get the form another to present the filled form ... read more

Hey, Merry Christmas to you all and Happy New Year! I hope it was full of fun and festive cheer. Here we spent christmas day trying to devour a roast dinner that could have fed a factory of hungry elves and we are looking forward to a boozy New Years Eve out on the town in the Central district of Hong Kong Island. We have been in Hong Kong for over a month now (the time has gone so quickly!) and I feel like we're are really getting to know the place despite not being able to afford to live it up too much as it is so, so expensive! It's nice to feel a bit more like a resident rather than just a passer-by and we are even starting to make friends with our local ... read more

Well, weve been in a hong kong a few more weeks now and are having a good time. Throughout the weeks we have ticked off most off the major sights; Victoria Peak, Central, Causeway Bay, Kowloon, and seen some culrutal highlights such as the Art and Space museums, the WTO protests, and the Honk Kong Philharmonic Ochestra featuring a good violin soloist Renaud Capucon. Sportswise, we caught the National Hong Kong Sevens where the top local teams fought out, and yesterday I ran the Hong Kong King of the Hills Half Marathon, which was very hilly (cumulative altitude change of 2500m) and very hard! Merry Christmas All!!... read more

After a few days in Singapore we flew into Hong Kong. It was relatively cold there (15-17degrees!!), especially after being in Malaysia and Singapore. We even had to wear jumpers the whole time. In Hong Kong they really go to town with the Christmas lights. This and the colder weather made it seemed a bit more like Christmas for us. Our first day was spent at the newly opened Disneyland Hong Kong!!! It's the smallest of the Disney parks but it's brand new and so much cleaner than EuroDisney. One thing about the Hong Kong and Chinese people is that they really love taking pictures. You couldn't walk anywhere in the park with out stepping into someone elses photo. There were all of the usual Disney shows to visit but one of them had Cantonese speaking ... read more

December 17, 2005, Hong Kong I write this from the relative safety of our apartment in Sheung Wan. We are just back from the fracas in Wan Chai where WTO protesters staged a huge parade that blocked traffic on several major thoroughfares. The parade was a planned event and began in Victoria Park, with the route passing through Causeway Bay and Wan Chai, then on to the Convention Center. Well, that’s what was supposed to happen…. Our day started out peacefully with coffee & croissants at Deli France and no particular plan in mind afterwards; it was already past 3pm. Idling curbside after the caffeine and carb jolt, Tony decided we should see if there was anything going on at the WTO conference. Logical choice …for Tony. After a trek back to get the camera - ... read more
