Oh My GOD! I'm in Hong Kong! Holy Shite! This is the maddest thing ever! I'm sat in the beautiful sun, staring up at the most humongous sky scrapers you could ever imagine! It's a really, really lovely place. The people are so friendly and it's so unbelievably British, I feel oddly at home! Have bought an Octopus, which should come in handy getting around the city. The plane journey over here was really painful, but I was sat next to Robin and his wife Ann, who are Hong Kong ex-pats, so I've got all the insider info on where to go and what to see, which is always a good thing since I'm completely lost and havn't got a clue where I'm sleeping tonight. Need to find a hostel.... 13:00 Jesus, what a treck. ... read more

Still having a fantastic time here - I thought that the novelty of the city would wear off but it hasn't as of yet! During the day I went to the Peak and to Stanley Market. Hockey training in the evening was fun. As it was so long since i had picked up a stick that I thought I was going to be crap but it wasn't that bad! That said my legs have been aching since then. On Wednesday I decided that I had better get out of the city and went out to Lantau island by ferry and got the bus to see the big Budha - amazing. I can't believe how within an hour of HK centre you can be in the most remote areas. Included in the entry fee to see the ... read more

Well I've arrived in Hong Kong to spend a few days with Conor before Andy joins me on route to New Zealand. I'm having a fantastic time so far. It was a pretty long flight to get here but the 11 hours weren't as bad as I expected and I did sleep a little which is just as well given that Saturday was a long day!! Conor and Rita were playing in a hockey tournament so I went to support and we went straight from there to a bbq and out for the night. It was fun dancing in the rain outside Stormies in a T3 (their typhoon rating - T3 rain and wind didn't seem much worse than a typical day in Ireland!). Sunday morning I was woken for dim sum lunch (Julie found some ... read more

English Names Most Chinese, apart from their original names get English names while in their teens. They expect non-Chinese to be unable to pronounce or retain their names (I try but full names are hard). The other day, a friend of mine explained that it was his English teacher from Australia that gave him his name “Lackla” after a lake in Australia. So everyone introduces themselves to foreigners immediately by their newly selected English names: Candy, Sincere, Nicole, Joy, James, etc; At one of the cultural events, some one pointed out that my name said in Chinese (the sound pronunciation: SinDiAh) meant “Elegant Angel”, I’m loving this culture more and more…. Well this one has been a challenge. I started writing this in South Korea but then ran out of time. The same happened in Singapore and so I'm using my last morning in Hong Kong to knock this entry on the head before I end up having to sum up 4 months in 500 words! As it happens, I already have two weeks to describe, so excuse me if this is a little long and/or dull! Last time I wrote, I was in Fukuoka on the West Coast of Japan, waiting to take a ferry to South Korea. The possibility of a Typhoon passing over became actuality and my extra day in Fukuoka was spent in the hotel as strong winds and sheets of rain fell upon the city. Things were looking bad for the next ... read more

Hong Kong - an exercise in controlled chaos! Quirky Factsheet No 1 Hong Kong consumes more oranges than any other place on earth. The territory has the world’s highest per-capita consumption of cognac (around 10% of the worldwide market) and highest ownership of Rolls Royces. The Kwun Tong District in Kowloon is the most densely populated place on earth, with over 50,000 people per square km. In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but only using her bare hands. The husband’s lover, however, may be killed by any manner desired... Our final full day in Asia…it’s been a long journey, and we enjoyed every minute of it (well, maybe not EVERY minute, but most of the minutes). At the same time, we are SOOO looking forward to going home. When the trip started on August 18, we tried to imagine what life would be like on our return flight to the U.S., and, well…it’s pretty much come true…and then some. Some things we didn’t bargain for were the illnesses and soreness. Mama and baba are still struggling with a cough (keeping us up at night) and baba’s got some various aches and pains (sore foot/ankle, mild chills). I’ve got my foot propped up with ice as I write this. Sarah was mildly intrigued by baba’s infirmed state, but hasn’t stopped her from messin’ with baba. Boo-boo’s ... read more

We’re here…our last stop before returning to the states. Our journey from Guangzhou to HK, a total distance of about 100 miles, took 7 hours from door to door. If my math is correct, that’s about 14 miles an hour. We could have almost biked it faster. The flight itself was only 40 minutes. The rest was traveling to, from and waiting at the airport. One of the nice things was having limousine service from HK to our YMCA hotel. Well, it wasn’t exactly a limo, but it was a nice Toyota minivan that I’ve never seen before in the states. We had purchased a bus shuttle transfer to the hotel, but when they took a look at Sarah, the manager said, “For you, Mr. and Mrs. Hom, we have a limo waiting for you!” Ha! ... read more

I really thank God for the privilege of today! Sitting in front of the window of my residence room I’m starring out at the 7am traffic. My body is still jet-lagged and so I wake up really early ( 5 or 6am). The residence I’m in is said to be the most luxurious res. In Hong Kong ! They just built it but charge the same price : ) Thus far I’ve been learning some Cantonese, most are so shocked when I speak the little I know. However, Mandarin is what I really want to learn and thus far my Japanese friend who speaks little English has been teaching me some Japanese so that we can understand each other and so in all I might get really confused very soon with all the languages. I’ve been ... read more

Well, sorry to backtrack folks, but thought i'd better fill you in! I've left Hong Kong now and have just arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, but more about that next time! To get you up to speed with Hong Kong (its a long one... be warned!)... I set off from Teeside airport on Tuesday lunch time and arrived in London Heathrow about an hour later,... this gave me approx. 8 hours to kill,... well, sit and eat,... and eat and eat ! I enjoyed fish and chips for tea, possibly the last meal i'll eat that i'll actually recognise the meat! Well, eventually boarded the plane destined for Hong Kong. Got sat next to a chap called Martin who was going out to HK on business, he was my film buddy for the rest of the flight ... read more
