For my first full day in Hong Kong I decided to go exploring. I had a city map and had noticed that they had a able car which lead up to the great Buddha. I enquirer at reception as how to get there, and was given some helpful advice by an English girl who had been there herself. So armed with the info I headed off to negotiate my way on the tube. First stop was Macdonalds for breakfast. I then found an entrance to the tube as inward told there were several entrances I was bound to find one. I sussed out which line and direction I needed to travel and also how to get a ticket. I boarded the tram went for a couple of stops and then changed lines and rode the tram ... read more

Hi everyone back home Well, it's 30 deg plus here - hot - hot -hot. 90% humidity. First day we got horribly lost, walked for miles (it seemed) in the wrong direction. Oh dear!! Today we did much better. Maps actually do help. ha ha. We went across to Tsim sha Tsui (chim sar choy) on the ferry. Had a wander round area. See photo's. Will try to post in a couple of days from London. Oh, I forgot to mention, if I ever win lotto, I am bringing all the daughters in law and daughter and sister etc for a shopping spree. This place is unbelievable for gorgeous clothes, and beautiful childrens wear.... read more

Hi All, So enough of the history and culture today.. Off to Disneyland Wow was it hot... The park isn't very big but it was great fun. I rode the runaway mine train, the toy soldiers parachute drop and a roller coaster in the dark, which I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called! I walked around for a couple of times and waited for the parade and by then the heat was too much so I decided to go back to the hostel. I have discovered a new hatred of umbrellas. I am the wrong height here in east Asia, i.e. too tall, and I'm getting tired of having umbrellas rammed into my face and head.. In the evening I went to Kowloon on the metro and walked around for a ... read more

Hi All, I can't believe it.. I've been wanting to visit Hong Kong for such a long time and now that I'm here I have a cold... Just my luck.. With that said I went to travel on the Star Ferry. I'm staying in a hostel in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong island so the ferry is only a short tram ride away. The trams are a great way to see Hong Kong island. It's quaint to be able to ride through what feels like a city from the future on these pieces of history. They are the only remaining working double-decker wooden trams in the world. I got off at Central and walked to the ferry. Hong Kong is very higgledy piggledy, much like a British city, and it can be quiet easy to get ... read more

Hi All, I started the day by going to watch the firing of the Noon Day Gun. The gun is owned by Jardine's which used to be called Jardine. Matherson & Co. Jardine and Matherson were one of the largest hongs to be operating out of China and made their money by dealing in opium. Jardine and Matherson were the first hong to buy land on Hong Kong island. They would ship the opium in from India and then ship tea, silks and other Chinese goods back to Britain. It was a tradition of Jardine and Matherson's to fire a gun when one of their ships entered the harbour. One time a ship was being captained by a high ranking navy officer who was unaware of this tradition. Upon entering the harbour the gun was dutifully ... read more

So it's now August...I know; how and when did that happen? I want to go back a few months to January 1st 2014, and to new years resolutions. It's a while ago I know, but did you make any resolutions? Can you remember them? I'm sure many people go the distance and last 365 days, but for many of us, resolutions are a distant memory by February. This year I decided to do something different, and I thought I would share it with you. I realised that every year I made a "new years resolution" that was not that meaningful, and I would lose motivation to maintain whatever it was, or I had made it so generic that I could convince myself it was impossible not to achieve it! Here is what I am doing this ... read more

Seven years in Hong Kong, and you think you’ve done most things there are to do. Thankfully I still manage to surprise myself and discover more. Monday, that tricky day of the week when there’s a lot to do and it’s back to work after the weekend. Monday night is often one of those go to the gym, healthy dinner, early night kind of days. This particular Monday I was offered the chance to do something quite different. I left my desk at 6pm, raced home to change, and by 7pm I was in a taxi to the start of “The Twins” hike. Five of us began hiking in the dusk, heading up over the first hill towards the beach town called Stanley. It was quite a surreal turnaround. “The twins” are a popular hiking route ... read more

My first trip was when I was one year old. My family moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from Colorado for my Fathers work. I don't remember anything of those days so let us leave it. We moved and traveled quite often but the first time I traveled solo was flying from San Francisco, California to Miami, Florida. I believe I was fourteen years old. Perhaps older, perhaps younger, but fourteen is close enough. My Father was a pilot for United Airlines, and I could fly for free. So I decided to take a day trip to Miami. I cannot tell you why I chose Miami but there I was, a boy dressed in Khakis and a nice shirt flying across the country. No hotel reservation, no car, no friends or family waiting, a few dollars in ... read more

In May, we were lucky to go to Hong Kong to renew our visas. We left on Sunday morning and took a flight to Shenzhen airport. Though it is much cheaper to fly into, it is also a bit far to get to Hong Kong. After a bus, a couple of subway rides and border crossings, we arrived at our hotel in the Kowloon area of Hong Kong. The room was snug but very modern and much more comfortable than the one we stayed at in Korea. After a quick rest we took the subway 3 stops to downtown on Hong Kong Island. Though it is very busy and packed tight, Hong Kong has a lot jammed into its tiny space. You can find a lot of Western style restaurants mixed in with local food and ... read more
