Background: Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.

Hong Kong - the New York City of Asia! Energy buzz, stimulation plus, stores galore of every designer name you can think of, tall buildings, people everywhere (7 million people live here!) …and winding mountain roads and beautiful green spaces. We had two full fun fabulous days in Hong Kong and we walked until we dropped! Our hotel was in Kwun Tong in Kowloon, a bit of a distance but it is easy to travel by public transit in Hong Kong and we quickly learned how to get to Victoria Harbour. From there we walked and boated and looked up and [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, I want to apologize now and hope all of you will understand if: you start getting blogs next week about my dogs barking every time someone passes the house you start getting blogs about how I hate to cook and would really love to hire a chef to prepare for us healthy meals you get a blog of pictures I've uploaded of my: garden, mail man and local cat and put videos of Jeff coming home from work. We have spent the past week in Hong Kong enjoying the fantabulous above-and-beyond really quite wonderful hospitality of one Ms. Evasdottir. She has played tourguide (and history/religion professor), housed us, and taken us to way more authentic Chinese restaurants than we'd have found on our own. Thank you, Erika! We will fly tomorrow to Ulan Bator and spend a few days there before getting on the train. We're disappointed to miss Beijing and the first leg of the Trans-Mongolian, but between visa cost & hassle and wanting to linger here a few extra days we decided this was best. We we [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

We arrived at the hotel which is situated right next to what can only be described as hong kongs eqivilant to walfords market, only with more fish stalls! nice! once inside hotel is good - our room is located [View Full Entry]

Our first glimpse of Hong Kong on our (4 hour delayed) flight in, was a spectacular swoop over the island before landing. The tall skyscrapers glittered a multitude of colours, lighting up the entire night sky. The size of the buildings is impressive. Even from the air you get a feel for Hong Kong's teeming, congested streets, bustling with life. We caught a bus from the airport to our hotel on Hong Kong Island, in an area called Causeway Bay. It was a good location as we were right next to the super-efficient MTR (subway) line which was also very cheap. [View Full Entry]

Hong Kong Take 2

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » Wan Chai
Back in Hong Kong, and I was lucky enough to have a flat sorted before I arrived. I’m living with a friend (Amy) in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island. It’s a lovely place in an excellent location. Before I started work I enjoyed watching the Olympics, and there was a big screen in Victoria park for people to go and watch, however, the Cantonese commentary was not that helpful for me! Thanks to the Olympics the public sports facilities are free until the 30th September so I have been frequenting the outdoor 50m pool a ten minute walk away, it’s [View Full Entry]

Cantonistan

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island
Cantonistan. Qatar Airways Airbus a320 Over Saudi Arabia en route to East Africa. The T15 was an express to be remembered. It was clean, in good condition, and each cabin had internal airline style toilets. I watched with awe as the Chinese countryside slipped by under a blue sky. I had never seen a blue sky this close to the industrial heartland. The train hammered along at just under 100miles per hour. We ate a light dinner in the good restaurant and then slept early. I woke early as the train clattered around the hills of canton. The hills were lush [View Full Entry]
