We travelled to Hong Kong today which took about 3 hours from Beijing. Hong Kong again is very high rise but not as clean as Beijing and Shanghai. Got a couple of days here to do some touristy things. Including going on the only double decker tram in the world and visiting the night market.... read more

Hi guys I'm new to this so I'm hoping I'll get an answer ASAP coz I'm a wee stuck here. I'm in Hong Kong with my wife and it seems impossible to find a way to Hanoi (Vietnam), I read by others that you can catch a bus from Hong Kong to nanning and then to Hanoi. One question? Do I need a visa if I'm entering china but not spending time in china?... read more

Apparently, if there is one thing expats and tourist must do in Hong Kong it is to go to Happy Valley on a Wednesday night. Happy Valley is the name of the horse track. Yes. You read right, the horse track. So with a bunch of girls whom I met at the hostel we decided to go for diner and then to check out this famous Happy Valley. We had dim sum in a Taiwanese restaurant. The food was good but the company not so much. One of the girl was definitively not travelling on a budget and wanted to get all of the most expensive items on the menu… Spending the evening at the race field was kind of interesting. Most of the crowd was indeed composed of expats and showed more interest in drinking ... read more

I got the bus from Tai Mei Tuk (the beautiful alpine-looking village where my hostel is) back into Tai Po Market train station. I ran the gauntlet of the Tai Po market stalls in order to get to the Hong Kong Railway museum which turned out to be closed (it opens every day but Tuesday.) Instead I decided to take a local bus from Tai Po market to Hung Ham Long? where there is a famous wishing tree. It was a recommendation from my guide book. I arrived to find a little market place with a local temple, lots of locals sitting around eating noodles and drinking China milk tea, and incense everywhere. I paid a lady 50 pence and she gave me a fancy scroll and a pen with which to write my wish. I ... read more

The north side of Hong Kong island is a new city with mainly high-rise building. District are called Central, Sheung wan and Soho. It has a little feel of NYC but doesn't have the same charisma. This is very obvious when you get to see it from above. I went on top of Victoria peak (using the cabled tram, I'm lazy) and there is no building that you can recognise. Except maybe the one of the Bank of China but I have just learnt about it today. There is no iconic buildings and most of the high rise are apartment blocks. Don't get me wrong, the view was still nice and well worth the trip up there. I went up there late afternoon to catch the sunset and have the night view. Before that I visited ... read more

I met Elaine and her family for lunch today. They were eating Dim sum (Hong Kong's equivalent to Spanish tapas.) She met me at Wong Tai Sin station (it's near her house) and she took me to where her family were eating in a big hall with lots of round tables which could fit 7 people around them. Elaine was with her mum, two of her mum's friends and her dad, then her sister joined us later. They are a lovely family and although none of them apart from Elaine could speak English, her mum made me laugh a lot. Elaine interpreted between us as her mum was asking me lots of questions, like which year was · born and which is my Chinese animal, Apparently it is a tiger but I would really love to ... read more

I arrived at Chiang Mai airport at 4am and it was all closed up. The lady who owned the hostel drove me there out of kindness as there was no tuk tuk. My flight with Air Asia left at 6am. Air Asia turned out to be the Asian equivalent of Ryanair but luckily I slept for the whole two hours so no problem! My seat was comfortable. I got a very modern train from the airport into town which gave me a chance to get some amazing views of Hong Kong and Kowloon. I got a bus which drove me at top speed through the traffic which is pretty aggressive here and beep their car horns all the time. After spending a day here the only positive thing I have to say about this city is ... read more

Ahoj! Many, many apologies for being M.I.A. There has been whirlwind of events the past few days so let's start with new years eve. New Years Eve in HK is a blast and a half! Winnie and I walked all over Central. We started off at Mana!, an extremely healthy restaurant that consists of flatbreads, salads and shakes. I'm pretty sure it's a vegetarian place but man, it was delicious. It's got a Boulder-esque feel with its decoration and the water fountain comes from a "water wall"... and they call it sky juice. That part of it, is okay, not my cup of tea but the food makes it all fantastic. And it's all made in-house and it's super fresh! Now that's rare in HK. Then we made our way to a Belgian waffle shop called ... read more

I decided to head to Tsim Sha Tsui over the weekend. It's a popular area where I used to hang out as a high school kid. It's also a great place to shop, eat and look at the Hong Kong skyline. When I was in high school, I would walk along the harbour, watch summer outdoor concerts, go to plays, shop shop shop, eat eat eat and take the ferry. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to peruse the harbour mostly because the night view is way better to photograph than the day and I had to leave before nightfall... so perhaps another entry! There's a lot of things that have stayed the same in TST but so many more things have been added on top of it. There are so many more shopping centres than ... read more

Good day! It's great to catch up with good friends. I spent the better part of the day with the girls (Mandy, Tracy and Winnie). We ate, shopped, shopped and shopped. I haven't shopped like a Hong Kong-er in a while and let me tell you, the locals here really know how to shop. There's a ton of walking, going up and down escalators, squeezing through crowds, plotting from one mall to the next a.k.a. mall hopping, visiting over a hundred stores and bargaining. We shopped for about 4 hours but the average shopping adventures are about 6 - 8 hours and most of the time, there's no resting. We were shopping in Mong Kok, which is where most of the local malls are located. These malls are intimate in space and FULL of things. And ... read more
