New photos on: http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg311/draftwrite/ …..Xiang Gang, or Hong Kong, as you & I know it, is now a part of China yet still apart. It is pretty autonomous in many ways & having spent such a long time under the influence of the British it's quite different from the mainland. An ex-colleague has been living there for a couple of years & suggested we visit. Lisa is a really lovely Canadian lady who is preparing to get married in July before moving to Vietnam with her French husband. A group of teachers from our school plan to go to Hong Kong during the 5 days of the Labour Day holiday. As usual there is attrition & in the end only Julie & I make it..... .....this blog is a bit late as the internet, already only ... read more

Well Hello Everyone: It has been a while since I have been out here. It has been crazy since returning from the States and my visiting my family. My boxes finally arrived from the USA- so I have been going through them and figuring out where to put everything- it is so great having my pictures of my family around the different rooms- like having a little piece of home with me. Forgot I had so many mixing bowls, measuring cups, and gadgets so really glad I held off on buying a ton of items. Started working out at the gym in my apartment complex - slowly building up my endurance again to run- made it to the 2K mark in a run pace before I had to slow down and go back to run /walk ... read more

I had endured an uneventful day waiting in the extremely crowded business lounge in Amsterdam punctuated by periodic grazing of beef broth (basically a beef stock cube in warm water), cheese that looked like Scottish fudge and a meat based product which if I was pushed would guess was pork. However, given the Dutch propensity for our equine friends, I fear I may have been wrapping my gherkin in Shergars' distant cousin. I also polished off some chicken wings, the aforementioned gherkins which were the size of bananas and onion rings, Heston Blumnethal take note! Although you will not hear this from Oz Clarke or in the Decanter magazine, these dishes all matched superbly with several glasses of red wine from somewhere or other. Feeling extremely relaxed and looking forward to my luxurious business class flight ... read more

So it has been a while since I have been out on the blog. I haven't done much traveling or going to new places so no exciting pictures or experiences to add to this entry. I am still trying to wrap my head around the travesty and destruction which happened last week at one of my favorite events, the Boston Marathon. Being born and bred in Boston this is an event that has been apart of my life and has such a deep meaning in how people come together from all around the world and are out there going at their own pace and running probably the hardest 26.2 miles in their lives. Some do it because they love to run and it is a challenge for him/ her, others do it to meet or challenge ... read more

Before meeting my friend for dim sum, I wandered around Wan Chai for about an hour. I thought I'd been there before and was surprised to realize none of it looked familiar to me. But it made the wander even more enjoyable since I was constantly discovering new things around each corner. I met my friend around noon and we went to a well-known seafood and dim sum restaurant. It was--without a doubt--the best dim sum I've ever had. We spent three hours stuffing ourselves silly and catching up and talking about future plans. After she went back to the mainland for the holiday, I shopped a little, had some coffee, and decided to check out the laser light show again. I hadn't seen it in years and forgot how huge the crowds were. While it's ... read more

I arrived Tuesday night on the last bus from Guangzhou, had dinner, and then went to bed early. Today, I awoke early, feeling refreshed. I got an early start out the door to run a few errands before meeting my friend for lunch at noon. We went up to the mid-levels to my favorite taco restaurant. We looked at the sky, decided it looked like rain, and went to the movies and hated it. It's rare that I hate a movie, but this was one of those times. The only reason we didn't walk out was because we kept hoping there'd be some character or plot development and the whole thing would come together in a genius way at the end. No luck. We took the trolleys, or "ting tings" as they're called locally for a ... read more

We arrived today in Hong Kong around 17.00 local time. And as its St. Patricks day we decided we could at least have one beer. But I think we might have forgotten one thing... We are not in Bangkoks Kaosan Road and you don't just walk out of your hotel and find a bar in Hong Kong. After of hour of exploring we ended up having fried rice wich could be Katrins national dish if I didn't know better and a beer in a western Chinese place...! I did see one bar in our walk and we managed to back track over there and now sitting, googling irish bars in Hong Kong! Should we go and celebrate like we ware Irish (we used to play football for an Irish football team at least)? Or is it ... read more

There’s at least one company (Key West Express for example) that advertises that “getting there is half the fun”. I don’t know that it applies to getting to Asia. I remember that as a youth I would always ask my father "are we there yet?" when on what seemed like a long trip. This is a long trip. I’m writing this chapter in Seoul, South Korea (actually Incheon Airport) during my five hour layover to Hong Kong. I got up Thursday morning at 4:00 am in Sarasota and got to Detroit for my transfer flight at 12:30 pm to this airport. Everything went smoothly on the 14 hour flight from Detroit to here. It was a Boeing 777 and I had purchased an upgrade to economy class which was a good value for me. But, to ... read more
