Sorry guys, this blog was a long time coming. It is the begging of the Tibet journey. There is something about “Tibet” that makes you think of National Geographic—the land that seems so isolated, desolate and deadly. It is home to the largest mountain ranges with the largest mountains in the world. The vast land in southwest China had a great appeal to me that I was unaware of until the proposal of going for the May holiday was mentioned. As soon as the prospect of going to Tibet was thrown up, I jumped on it. I wouldn’t let the idea go. It was enough for me just to step foot off the air plane onto the land, look around, then get back on the airplane just so I could say “I’ve been to Tibet.” ... read more

ah Yangshuo is how the lonely planet china starts the description of Yangshou. If I YB ever do a doctorate thesis in social Studies I will do it on the evolution of towns around the world from total anonymity all the way to Bali/Cancun resort towns. On my scale, which is yet to be perfected (suggestions are welcomed), Yangshuo is rated "full backpacker" status. The town is probably just likely any 300k people town in China if it were not for 2 things: 1. the views - we will let the pictures explain 2. west street. this one street is full of guest-houses, restaurants of all kinds, bars noisy or quiet and ofcoruse travel agencies. The later offer anything a traveler needs: boat trips, bicycle trips, cave trips, hot-air balloon trips, rafting, kayaking. because of ... read more

Yesterday we went cycling through the countryside around Dali. Soon enough we found out that one of the girls in our group had never been on a bicycle. I've been requested not to include any identifying details, due to the embarrasing nature of this lack of a basic skill. So Lauren, don't worry, your secret is safe with me. Since in China being over 10 years old and not being able to ride a bike is an offence punishable by 5 years in jail, we took it upon ourselves to teach her, before any Chinese found out and went to the police with it. We rented a bike and went to a closed off section of a road under construction. This way, no cars to bother us. The way to the place was actually riskier, given ... read more

I am officially one year older - I'm finally 24. Those of you who know me may be thinking. "How did you skip a year? We thought you were 23!" But here in China I was 23 when I got here so now I'm 24. However old I may be I am, and always will be, a day older. So what did I do on my birthday? I went and did a bit more shopping - as that's what Hong Kong is best for. But unfortunately I wasn't feeling good for the most of the morning. I checked my e-mail in the morning but haven't really had a chance to respond. I decided to go to Guangzhou even though I didn't feel good as I wanted to be there a day early in case anything bad ... read more

Day two was another stunning drive through the Tibetan desert, past tiny whitebrick villages and fields full of yaks, all dressed up and ribboned in the sun - pretty cool. Arriving in Shigatse we had some Tibetan food at last for lunch (it was ok) then set off to explore the Tashilhunpo Monastery - one of the most important in Tibet. Set against the hillside and with golden rooves it is a pretty impressive sight from afar. Inside everything is on a grand scale - buddhas that are several stories high and tombs so elaborate they could bankrupt the nation. The highlight was being there at prayer time. We chatted with some of the younger monks and then entered into the Assembly hall as the monks (without their monk-slippers) chanted amidst the smell of juniper smoke ... read more

Sorry no photos yet. No idea why but hopefully have some for you soon. We've seen them and they're great. Well worth the wait. Paul - So last night, rather fantastically, we go upstairs to our room and on the television is Arsenal Vs Wigan!! Brilliant!!! Even better - they are showing all the goals from the other games as they go in! Suffice to say, Laura was well impressed and even managed to ask if Thierry Henry was playing. After 10 minutes it was 1-1, great game and Laura was so enthused she had fallen asleep. Well, we were going to the great wall today so I can JUST about understand. Got up bright and early at quarter past 6 and waited twenty five minutes for FLASH to get out of the shower. Apparently washing ... read more

Spent last 4 nights on "Yangtze River Cruises" boat, the main purpose of which was to view the scenery of the 3 gorges en route to the 3 Gorges Dam. Upon completion in 2009 the dam will have the worlds largest hydropower plant and increase the water level of the river by up to 100metres to make a lake from Yichang, back 660km on the Yangtze to Chongqing. After struggling around 35degree heat in Chongqing, we made our way to the boat office, helpfully placed on the 4th floor of a 20storey hotel, down some foul-smelling corridors and walls that looked like they had been subjected to a dirty protest. I began to worry whether we would be rowing our way down the Yangtze (or even worse, pedalling!). The place was full of Chinese on their ... read more

Just a quick note - its not letting us upload photo's at the moment so we will put these on another day. Probably after the Great Wall tomorrow! Fear not blog fans - Broughton is ok!! It was extremely serious heat exhaustion that kept him down for a day or two but being the man that he is, he bounced back and is in fine form. He even managed to haggle some sunglasses off some random bloke after his broke. (and has finally bought a hat to wear in the sun - laura) Friday 5th May - Princess Day (aka Laura’s birthday). Laura: We had a lazy lie in and croissants for breakfast (I can’t believe we managed to get hold of some!) and then went to the Temple of Heaven for the day. It’s a ... read more

The weeks have flown by and it's time for a well-earned break. We worked all the previous weekend, so as to have 7 consecutive days off. The students were very excited, as many of them had planned to go home to see their families and friends for the first time since Spring Festival Holidays in early February. The first week of May is known as one of China's "Golden Weeks", the others being in the first week of October, and, of course, the Spring Festival in January/February. It is a time when a large proportion of the 1.4 billion inhabitants is on the move. Something not to be taken lightly, I can assure you! Many people had warned me, "Don't even think about travelling during this time!" Consequently, I had not made any special plans. However, ... read more

Sally and I had such a good time yesterday I hired her again for today. I could probably have managed my route over the next few days, but it is nice to have someone along who knows all the little nooks and crannies, and the language. Plus I know she could use the fee. After our 8 hour bike ride yesterday, today was much easier. We took local buses to visit some local towns. Baisha is a little north of here and it was market day there. And I mean market day. IT takes place every 3 days and you can get absolutely anything your heart desires, from live birds to dead ones, from underwear to spices - you can even get your teeth cleaned at a stall right there! A little crazy. After that we ... read more
