Hello, and welcome from China, (Would have been more impressive if I could have said that in Chinese I know, but I can't so there)! Done a lot of travelling since my last entry and it's been a hard slog I can tell you. I'm lugging a lot of stuff, (damn the pursuasive techniques of those market sellers in Temple street), and the temperature here is around 27 degrees. We finally all came together completely as a group on Tuesday Morning. I still hold that we're a funny assortment of folk, some of whom I just can't suss, but it aint as bad as I first feared and I am developing my own little clique. We have a Journalist! She's Canadian... BUT SHES STILL A BLOODY JOURNALIST! (I'm meant to be on holiday away from such ... read more

I'm sitting in the lobby of a five star hotel. No, I'm not staying here - I wouldn't pay that kind of money for a room - I'm simply sitting here. Lobbies like these simply act as resting places for the well dressed. And being white I could walk in here wearing almost anything I liked - besides beggar clothes or my birthday suit. I came in to use the bathroom but I have a whole hour to waste and nothing to really do. Yesterday it rained - all day - and not what I used to call "Chinese rain" that Dalian gets but real hard rain. I went to see Dinghushan and was carrying my umbrella around the whole time. I got sick of carrying my umbrella around the whole time. I got sick of ... read more

For our May vacation, the rest of the American exchange students and I are traveling Tibet. I'm currently at an internet bar in Lhasa. This entry will probably have to take more than one entry, especially since I only have an hour here. One of the highlights for me so far was spending the night at a monestery at the base of Mt. Everest (despite altitude sickness problems) in a room that a monk had to give up for us, due to lack of space in the guest hotel. The monks were extremely generous with their rooms-- one actually slept on the floor of his, so that two of my classmates could have the two beds. The rooms were beautiful, and we were all very grateful. I'm going kind of out of order here, but another ... read more

The main attraction in Lijiang (besides the town itself) is Tiger Leaping Gorge. A gorge 900 meters deep and at some points, the width of a four lane highway. The TLG trek is about 25 kilometers over two days with a significant vertical climb (and descent). For the trek a group of people from Mama's organized and hired a minivan to get us to the starting point. And so, three hours after leaving Lijiang (an hour of which was due to what seemed to be the most disruptive road construction possible - there was just no road) we found ourselves facing a sunny day and 900 vertical meters of climbing. The group consisted of yours truly, Hadar and Ayelet (I imagine you notice the Israeli sounding names), Joanne, the sunburned Northern Irish girl (her own words) ... read more

We have made it to Lhasa!!! Starting in Zhongdian we drove for 7 days through some of the most amazing scenery ever: snow filled valleys and towering mountains, ochre gorges with powerful rivers running through, tiny villages filled with animals and smiling children, lush green valleys filled with vegies and grapes, thick pine forests and turquoise rivers and lakes that were so beautiful you almost couldn't believe they were real. At one pint we followed a dirt road through vegetation so lush it was almost jungle like. The road was up and down and bendy as anything - make it feel like a rally, pretty cool! Hitting 5013 metres above sea level was probably one of the highlights, and our photos of us amongst the snow and prayer flags will be some of our favourites of ... read more

Lijiang has undergone a decade long operation. The operation was a huge success. Incidentally, the patient is now in a coma. What was once a quaint town mostly housing the Naxi minority was earmarked for tourism development ten years ago. Ten years later, the once 30,000 strong Naxi minority living in the old town has dwindled to a few thousand. What has replaced it are souvenir shops run by Han Chinese (the majority in China). When you see a Naxi in traditional dress, he does so for the benefit of the tourists. the result is the saccharine feeling of Disneyland. You half expect someone dressed up as Naxi Mouse (whatever that may be) to show up and hug the kids. Sadly, this trend is quite prevalent across China, with perfectly nice little villages becoming the target ... read more

Recovered (for the most part) from a nasty flu that delayed my departure for two weeks, I finally set out for Golok. With a lingering cough and low energy, I decide to take it slow and make the trip in short stages. First stop is Chabcha where I stayed with an old friend, who is a teacher there, and his family. Next I head to Tongde where SRJ's brother is waiting for me on motorcycle. No time to think. Just jump on side saddle, backpack and all. Off we go to the outer edge of town where I hand out with his family for a few hours while they arrange a car for me to go to Raja Gompa, approximately 3 hours to the south. The trip, of course, took the rest of the day with ... read more

Got the bus to the train station and had dim sum with Goo-poh in a nearby restaurant. Took the early afternoon train to Dongguan, China, about an hour's ride. Felicia's Dat-suk (dad's youngest brother) met us at the station and we got a taxi back to his house. He later told Felicia that he wouldn't have recognized her, since it had been over 5 years since the last visit. Luckily, Goo-poh told Dat-suk to look for the tall guailo (white guy, or literally, “ghost guy”). Over the years Felicia’s dad had already got the family used to foreigners because he would bring his kung-fu students to visit. The taxi driver was behind a cage surrounding the driver's area....All the aunts and uncles and most of the cousins came over. We all went to dinner at a ... read more

On our last day in Beijing we packed in a couple most top sites, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. It was another national holiday, so the crowds were huge again. A highlight of the day however, was watching the people around us. We passed so many interesting characters: a husband and wife singing opera on the lakeshore, a man painting Chinese characters on the ground with a mop and water, and the many people that continued to take our pictures. One family who was out on the lake in a paddle boat came over to the shore to grab a shot of us! We kept ourselves going with random snacks along the way....with no language skills it's a 'point and hope it turns out' kind of situation. I think China would be a ... read more
