We joined about 1.5 million other visitors on a Chinese national holiday to explore the Forbidden City in Beijing. It was a blistering hot and insanely busy day, but despite it all, it was still fascinating to see. Still, at times I was confused as to what people were really more interested in seeing, the Forbidden City or a group of foreign people. Today we became the subjects of so many family photos I couldn't even begin to count them! It started out innocently (or so I thought)...a mother saw me comment on her daughter's cool holiday hat, and then asked me to join them in a photo. As time passed, some more people approached and asked to take pictures...I started thinking this was a little weird. Then I noticed that some people who were just ... read more

Sitting here with my feet on top of my shoes. For a person who used to love not wearing shoes at all in this kind of weather it's rough to wear and walk around in sandals all day - not that they're bad shoes. They're some of my best and most comfortable shoes. My hair feels nice on the back of my neck. Paul just took me to get a head massage at the best Salon in Daliang (not to be confused with Dalian as the only difference in spelling is the g in English but the characters are completely different). The massage itself was so relaxing that I fell asleep (or just about) but then afterwards the man who blowdried my hair literally took 4 minutes arranging my topmost hair trying to figure out where ... read more

I posted a sign and got 3 people to share a 4WD with me for 900yuan. Michael from Germany, Hubert from Austria, and Marleen from Holland. It took us 4 hours to get to the lake which is still frozen. This is the second-largest saltwater lake in China. On the way, we could see pilgrims prostating their way to Lhasa, yak and sheep herds on the hills with with snow on the peaks, nomad tents, sections of the infamous new railroad and a "parade of exactly 91 Chinese army trucks"! The landscape is harsh: brown rocky soil, snow, icy lake. The wind is brutally cold, particularly for a tropical Brazilian. It's ~minus 5-10 centigrade, and the 4718 meters above sea level makes it hard to breath. My advice: do NOT do what I did. Follow the ... read more

Geo: 33.9184, 108.719The newest addition to Xi'an's multitude of cultural sights! Very artificial but if you arrive expecting fake buildings, man made lakes and every gimmic under the sun (which any canny traveller in China does!) it makes for a good fun day out. I visited during May Festival, which meant the newly opened park was simply a backdrop for an erray of performances and activities i.e. dance shows, lion dancing, puppet shows, fireworks and laser show movies on the lake. Everything lights up at night and is beautiful.... read more

After leaving the monastery we have the tedium of a 7.5 hour bus journey to Quinchong, where we will start our Yangtze River cruise. None of us are looking forward to bus journey, not just because of the length, but also because on previous buses some of the passengers frequently spat loudly out of the window. At first we are feeling smug with ourselves, because we have managed to get the front seats which should ensure that we'll have a good view. Also, the spitting we feared does not take place as this is one of the big modern air-conditioned coaches in which the windows do not open. Unfortunately, the journey is still a trying experience because the bus driver and his assistant have an almost incessant converstaion that is as frantic as it is loud. ... read more

In the land of national holidays, i.e. Japan, there are three days off in the first week of May. These days make up Golden Week. With a few extra days of holiday leave, I had a week to enjoy yet another Asian adventure. I spent my Golden Week on a whirlwind tour of Beijing and Shanghai with my friends Jennifer, Julie and Ellie. It took a day of travel to get from Hiroshima to Beijing. We flew first to Shanghai, and transferred planes to Beijing. When we got to the airport, there was a nice man (Martin) waiting for us to take us to our hostel…great door to door service! From the beginning, Beijing by far exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend a visit! I think the fact that it wasn’t an overly modern or fast-paced ... read more

Guangzhou is to the west of America as Dalian is to the east. People in Guangzhou are relaxed and take time in their lives to truly spend freely. People in Dalian are busy - never have time to do anything but study and work. Guangzhou is full of greenery and has water running through it. Dalian has no greenery and has water running on two sides of it. These are some of the observances I've made today as I have traveled around Guandong a little bit - to parts of Guangzhou, Foshan and Daliang. This morning after getting ready for the day I walked around and found the metro to Yuexiu Park where I walked around for quite some time. There were people relaxing in all different parts of the park. Sitting reading books, dancing with ... read more

This was our last day in Yangshuo before we got our nightmare bus journey to Hong Kong. We went and had some much needed retail therapy then had a lovely stroll around the town and down by the river with Dan. Then went to our final Kung Fu training! Went to get our bus and poor Georgie was sure we were going to miss it cause we were waiting at the travel agents. Ended up taking a short cut - through the food market, which was completely disgusting, crabs, frogs, insects everywhere - in the lashing rain to the bus. Then found out it wasn't even going to Shenzhen. Georgie nearly had a heartattack but the bus wasn't too bad, we were delighted with the beds but when you HAVE to lie down for 10 hours ... read more

Hi all, Spent yesterday having a "rest", all the walking and sight seeing has battered our feet into a smelly mess! Ended up having a few beers in the bar with an Irish couple from Dublin who had just spent a year teaching English in Japan. They are travelling roughly the same path as us through Asia before heading to India and then back to Ireland! Got up this morning and headed over to Pudong on the eastern bank of the river. Decided to take the local transport again and hopped onto the river boat ferry for about 3p! It was interesting to mingle with the locals and smile politely as they all stare at you. I got the impression that not many Western people get the public ferry, which isn't really surprising as it would ... read more

The Forbidden City lies at the center of the ancient city of Beijing. It was home to 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, the Forbidden City is a public museum and World Heritage site, attracting millions of tourists from around the world. Through chance we left the Forbidden City as our last site to see in China, on our last full day. What a mistake! It was hot, and the place is HUUUGGGEE. Granted, there are plenty of seating areas around, and many of those in shaded areas, it is just that my bad knee could not keep up with all there is to see in this place. Another bad thing with this visit is that there were many closed off places due to renovations in preparation for the Olympics. One regret ... read more
