Today was probably the highlight of Tibet, and certainly one of the trip so far. Setting off from the dustbowl that was Shegar, we drove up and over the hills to the town of Basum where we caught an environmentally friendly (yeah right) bus to Ronphu Monastery in the foothills of the Himalayas. At first view Everest (or Qomolongma) was mindblowing. We were lucky to arrive around midday as the clouds parted and the sun shone on the Northern Face - just amazing. After lunch we set off, walking the 8km to base camp in just over 90minutes. Pretty good going considering the headwind that battered us and the altitude, with EBC being at 5200m above sea level. Base Camp was a cluster of tent hotels, with the real climbers hanging out just round a small ... read more

To fully get across stuff in this latest tome I probably have to aquaint you better with the rest of my travelling companions. As you might recall I wasn't that enamoured with them on first encounter which just goes to show what a judgemental git I can be, cos as time has gone on familiarity has certainly not bred contempt. On the whole, though we may be a large group we are a happy little band of wanderers. Firstly you have Richard and Stu. Richard, (sometimes goes by first name Neil), having been made redundant last year, (worked at Albright and Wilson for a while after college), took himself off for a 6 month stint around the world and is nearing the end of that now and is soon to return to the UK to look ... read more

What a Wall The Great Wall of China is a destination not to be missed. Went to the magnificant wall twice. One was the Ba Da Ling Wall. This is a well renovated tourist attraction. Most Tour groups and tourists will make their way there to view the Great Wall. This part of the wall is the nearest to Beijing, but due to the crowd, it's a little too commercial to really feel the granduer of this wall.... To really experience the wildness of the wall, you can make your way to the magnificant Huang Hua Wall. This part of the wall is slowly being repaired but as there is no commercial activities around it, it has retain it's old world charm of wildness and wide space. Standing on the wall, you felt like you were ... read more

So! Picture the scene, having only just escaped almost certain death trying to cross the Yangste on foot we were now all taking shelter in our bus on the edge of the harbour, the inclement weather buffeting our vehicle and Stu spurting blood all over the spot. (See earlier blog if you dont know what the heck I'm on about). Over the last week I've spent a fair bit of time with Stu and Rich, and though I think there is still stuff to realise, have had time to kind of suss their characters. Rich is the more rumbustious of the two, (sure that's a word), little bit more adventurous, outgoing, a bit more boystrous shall we say, where I'd be inclined to suspect Stu might be a tad more sensitive in a crisis. So there's ... read more

Rain rain go away, come back another day. Shanghai was remembered for the rain there, the only precipitation we have encountered since setting off 2 months ago (well, snow doesn't count!). Got the Maglev train from the airport to the city centre. The Maglev is the worlds only light magnetic rail system, suspended above the track and propelled by the forces of magnetism, and can reach a top speed of 430km/hour. Of course, when we were there, it was taking it easy, and only hit 301km/hour...typical! Wandered around the city, saw the Bund (old commercial area of the city where the European style architecture really stands out from the rest of the city) and the financial district of the Pudong, with the fancy buildings like the Pearl TV Tower (see the background behind Thomas in the ... read more

Flying over and then driving into Beijing all I could see was grey: grey buildings, grey people, grey covered trees and grey air. The atmosphere was thick and I felt my lungs protest. I arrived through a traffic jam of bicycles in a dusty grey alley or hutong where my guesthouse, Red Lantern, was located. Inside it was like another world, a pretty little courtyard laid out with seats and tables, running water and plants. Around the edge were two floors of rooms with veranda and balcony. I decided to wander the local streets to get my bearings and an initial feel for being in China. Road signs were luckily in both English and Chinese but very little else was. The shops were full of modern skirts and tops but few people seemed to wear modern ... read more

Over spring break from Qinghai Nationalities University, my roomate and friend join me in Tawu. At this point, I am just waiting a few days before going to Darlag and Padma Counties farther south. Killing time, however, quickly turns into fruitful research as I begin to meet prominent figures in Tawu in between sightseeing. Tawu is described in one guidebook as the quintessential 'cowboy town' of Golok. Indeed, the main road is crowded with nomads in cowboy hats with their long Tibetan coats fastened by Wild-West-style bullet belts and adorned by a knife tucked in the side. These bad boys have a rugged swagger and these days prefer motorcycles to horses as the prime mode of travel. At the Base of Amnye Machen After a day of wandering town, we set off for the base of ... read more

Hello! Did you think I'd dropped off the end of the world? (There are times when it's felt like I have)! I've been in distant territories, had lots of adventures, lots of experience, but sod all internet access!!!! After leaving Yangshou last week we set off, (via three bus transfers), to Longsheng, still very rural, but very different in landscape. Here the countryside is mountainous and forrested, with deep valleys, gorges and fast flowing rivers, where the local inhabitants live a mountain existance in villages hard to reach in any other form than on foot, and where the hillsides have been cut into to form terraces for rice growing. I had no idea what kind of treat we were in for, as I said we had to change busses a number of times, our final one, ... read more

10 May 2006 I am in Shanghai and just arrived this morning by sleeper train. I am in such a bad mood it's unbelievable!!!! China is testing my character in everyway, and the not so good side of me is surfacing more and more. There are some moments when I think to myself, "I hate China. I hate Chinese people...Get me outta here." I am in disbelief at myself, I'm Chinese for crying out loud!!!!!! Shame on me, but it's the truth. Right now my head is spinning and it hurts. The reason? 13 hrs on a sleeper train filled with smokers, the bad smell of MSG and no windows. My personal hell. At least it was not on a hard seat carriage filled with 100 spitters. It is so comfortable on the sleepers its a ... read more

The American Postal Office has a service called "the M-Bag". A strong and frosted plastic sack provides the opportunity to send books to China cheaper, in larger and heavier quantities. The use of this service helps to keep the weight of my travel-luggage to clothing, personal items, and gifts. I am carrying a 4 cup coffee-maker with me, along with a few pounds of coffee as well as the lap-top. Men have become very loyal to their personal toiletries, and I will be packing a several month supply. Visiting a number of stores around the College on the last visit to Taizhou, I noticed few empty shelves and ample wares around the city. The consumer-selections do have limitations, and if one might look for "fresher" markets, plan on not being dissappointed. For a Western first-time visitor, ... read more
