Hello residents of blog-land: First off...Happy Mother's day 2006 to all the mother's out there! No offense to all the mother's reading this, but my mom is the world's best. (And since I'm on the other side of the world, I can definitely say that with some authenticity). So....as I sit here at my computer on a beautiful Sunday day...I'm starting to reminisce about my time here in Beijing, and I offer you this anecdote for the day of how far I've come in four months. I was sitting in the park next to my apartment, finishing up a John Grisham book I have been engrossed in. Out of the corner of my eye I see an old Chinese man very very slowly hobbling along. Sure enough he sits down next to me on the bench. ... read more

Our trip to Wayen Gompa was not fruitful, as none of the people I had planned to meet were there. Holly and I then took a trip to the local internet cafe, more accurately described as a smoke-filled room of young men playing video games, and happened upon a very friendly monk who spoke excellent English. In this part of Tibet, an English speaker is rare, almost as rare as finding a piece of pizza, which would be impossible! The monk’s name is Akhu Legshed Zangpo and he’s an English teacher at a children’s school 8 km. from Darlag. He invited us to visit the school and so we went. The school is quite large - 250 children - and almost all are orphans, coming from all over Tibet. They learn Tibetan, Chinese, English, math, and ... read more

Very tired tonight! Batteries at a serious low ebb so gonna blog as fast as I can and then bugger off to bed. On our last night in Xian we went out for a night at a spot that does an all you can eat hotpot buffet dinner. For hotpot don't read that thing that Betty Turpin makes on Coronation street, this is sort of a steaming hot barrel of water on your table which you then add you choice of ingredients to, which included on the buffet bar a container of LIVE EALS! Yup, just pick them up, drop them in the boiling water and they're ready to eat in no time. I decided that was one experience I could live without, but Colin and Chris opted for it and reported they were ok, but ... read more

Relaxing after the Wall After a fairly tiring day hiking the Wall, we decided Friday was going to be a bit more laid back. We lazed around in the morning and Laura discovered the hotel's 25yuan (~$3) breakfast buffet where she made several trips for fruit, juice, etc. We've been a bit lacking in the fruits & veg department since arrival. We decided our next stop after Beijing is Pingyao and dealt with getting train tickets for a Saturday night sleeper train. Then we headed off to the area north of the Forbidden City. Very pretty and a bit more tourisity with several preserved palaces, temples, etc. We just wandered and finally ended up at trendy travellers bar where we played cards and drank beer. When a guide book photographer came in to photograph the place ... read more

First Stop: Dawu After a day-long car ride, I reached Dawu, the capital city of Golok, within the Tibetan province of Amdo. My travel companions, of course, spoke no English and so our communications were tempered with puzzled expressions and much laughter. Fortunately, smiles are universal. One thing that seems to go well when there is little else one can say is to tell people “Ari ked” (English) equivalents for various things. This always gets a big laugh - especially a three-syllable word like "afternoon" or "Stephannie." In Dawu I met up with Holly, an American woman who has been living here for six months studying Amdo dialect and doing research for her PhD. We hit it off instantly, and have spent the last three days together, traveling and exploring. It’s great to have a friend ... read more

When people hear "Guizhou" coming from my direction, they are quick to reply with a hearty "Gesundheit!". Guizhou is not the sound resulting from a nasal evacuation but rather the name of a province in China. But you could be forgiven for not being able to differentiate between the two. Lonely Planet China 9th Edition has 980 pages. It chose to devote 19 of them to Guizhou. Quick calculation. About 2 percent. Leafing through these pages, one discoveres that a non-negligible part of the pages are devoted to a discussion concerning the means to relieve oneself of the province, be it by train, bus or yak if necessary. I know of only one other couple, friends of mine, who actually bothered to travel here. But then they are China veterans, and one of them speaks fluent ... read more

12/05/06 Left the senior French group(very nice people)in Kunming, they carried on their trip up north and I made my way down here to YinYuan in YuanJiang district right at the border of HongHe prepecture. A nice lttle town at the altitude about 1500m which surrounded by many small villages. YinYuan is a Bai region but they claimed they didn't wear the same costume as the Bai in Dali, and in fact they didn't wear any costume anymore. YinYuan was a prosperous market town in the old day on the tea trading route from east to west, you can still see some old houses with beautiful lintel, roof tile and woodcraft. Local said there used to be a city wall surrounded the village, and many temples within the area for different believer , but now there ... read more

Getting to the Wall The morning of our trip to the Great Wall was gorgeous - which helped with the fact that we had to be up so early and in the van by 6am. We had decided to visit a section of the wall called Jinshanling that was 3 hours away from Beijing and would hike 10km from there to the Simatai section of the wall. We were joined in the van by four other Westerners - two Dutch, two Spanish, we think - all intent on sleeping in the van. We were excited about seeing a greater slice of Beijing and the surrounding area through the van windows. What we initially expected to be more of a leisurely van ride seeing some of the greater Beijing area quickly became more of a thrill ride. ... read more

10th May Laura - Got the train to Datong. It was a hard seat, and when they say hard they really do mean HARD!!! It was more or less a bench with a high back, which me and Paul shared with some guy who kept clearing his throat every 10 seconds. Fortunately he got off half way through the journey (which was 6 hours long). The people sitting opposite us were apparently allergic to fresh air and when we opened the window the woman sitting next to it cowered away and looked like she was going to cry. So we had to spend most of the journey in 100 degree heat (I exaggerate, but only slightly) and breathing in stuffy, sweaty air. Needless to say when we finally arrived we both had headaches and I felt ... read more

I'm back sitting on my couch in my apartment with my cat sitting to my right listening to my ex-boyfriend Jake play guitar and sing (sometimes horribly sometimes well) through AIM - yes you can even talk to each other through AIM. It's a wonderful cheap way to talk to him, or in this case hear him play. He's a really great guitar player and really loves it. He's the only one who has played a lot of guitar around me in the past couple of years and I really love it. Thinking back to today I had a very strange incident at the bank. There were three lines of bank tellers and they were ushering all of the foreigners into one of them as that one could speak English. So I'm ushered into a line ... read more
