Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Auf Reisen - Teil 1: Verluste

 Asia » China » Zhejiang

Xitang is known for its bridges, lanes, and ceilinged corridors. Chinese describe it 「橋多、弄多、廊棚多」. It almost felt like I just traveled hundreds of years back in time to the Ming and Qing Dynasty. It also felt like I was walking in a Chinese painting with waterfront landscape. Life here seemed to be quieter, more lay back and easy going. This ancient water town reminds me of the Chinese poem: 小橋, 流水, 人家. Unique and beautiful! [View Full Entry]

Let’s take a journey back in time… Xitang is one of the ancient water towns in the south of the Yangtze River which beauty lies in its simple, unadorned appearance and lack of tourists! (compared to Zhouzhuang, the other famous water town) Many stores and houses are built on the riversides, the river being in many ways the main road... So, you naturally follow it, protected by covered corridors, walking by ancient houses, tiny shops and tea house where time has stop a while ago... Food street is as surprising as this town, might not look very pleasing at firs [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Hangzhou to weather that was slightly warmer again than Suzhou, after a two and a half hour trip, during which we dozed and read intermittently. We eventually found the queue for taxis, which was only about two hundred meters long, and snaked backwards and forwards inside well-defined barriers under a tin roof held up by rust and hope. On the way we were accosted by several “private” taxi drivers. These are people who own a car and offer to drive you in their “taxi” to your destination immediately, thereby avoiding having to queue up, but they also try [View Full Entry]

So we finished packing our lives into two suitcases (using space bags) and two big backpacks! It was epic! And we still had about 3 small suitcases leftover filled with unwanted DVD’s, clothes, shoes, and random crap! Mrs. Agapay, you would have gone ballistic seeing us throwing away all these things. Even Cherizze was biting her nails. Oh well, some lucky Chinese cleaner scored that junk that morning! So we got 3 hours sleep and moved our bags into our Andrew’s house and grabbed a cab to the Wuxi train station. Our first destination was Hangzhou! The train ride took [View Full Entry]

We headed out of Tangkou very early - 6:30 in the morning. We thought we could get back to Hangzhou before 11:00, but we forgot about the shady bus system. The bus made a lot of stops, picked up people on the side of the road, waited at the bus stations for a long time too. It was so annoying. I guess we got a non-express ticket. At the bus stations, hawkers come onto the coach to sell you anything from chestnuts to homemade onion pancakes, to souveniers. Thoroughly annoying because it was cranky from getting up early, the bus was [View Full Entry]

Putuoshan: Island Fever

Standing Buddha
Standing Buddha
I was there
In lieu of going to Guiyang I decided to go to Putuoshan, one of China's sacred mountains. Putuoshan is 25 minute taxi ride, 1 hour bus ride, and 3 hour ferry ride away! Someone from the travel agency bought my bus/ferry ticket and I found him to get my tickets. The guy was a little scary looking because he was very cross-eyed (I judge, I know). I asked how many people were on the tour and he said, "One." I freaked out for a second, thinking that I had to spend the day ALONE with the cross-eyed man. Then he told [View Full Entry]

Garden City After five buses (three of which went in the wrong direction), a taxi ride, a long walk, a look of confusion when I passed two separate Ferrari dealerships, and a lot of sweating I arrived in Hangzhou: the city touted as the most beautiful in all of China, thanks to West Lake. Xi Hu, or West Lake as it is translated, is a massive lake which sits in the middle of Hangzhou and it is surrounded by immense parklands on all sides, and in its middle as well for that matter. The name “West Lake” is by no means [View Full Entry]
