Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Part 1 of our Moganshan Mountain Adventure I have been eager to visit Moganshan, about 3 hours southwest of Shanghai, since I first read about it. I've also heard stories from other friends who have visited the area at all times of the year and came back with rave reviews. Moganshan used to be the summer retreat for foreigners and missionaries in Shanghai. We have been making our way through our "must do" list and after this trip, we have a "must do again" list. It was just fantastic. I think we all agree that it was one of our best [View Full Entry]

Suze goes to Suzhou  Asia » China » Zhejiang » Suzhou
On Monday morning, I took the train with Mark to Suzhou. For the record, Suzhou is pronounced "sue-jo". He was going there for work, so we said goodbye at the train station and he went to his meeting and I got in line for a taxi. I had copied the pages from our travel book to avoid carrying the whole big book, and had a tiny map of the city and the highlights for tourists. I decided to go to the furthest spot and work my way back toward the train station. Another city that claims to being the Venice of [View Full Entry]

We completely forgot to post these birthday photos of mine! I really wanted to do something different than we normally do for my birthday. So Desi had made plans to go bowling at the local sports arena. I was so excited! However, I also was starving when it came time to go. So we did Japanese first...and when we pulled up to Perfeca--it was closed! Of course! Nothing goes as planned. So, we ended up at the foreigner bar, playing pool. Still fun. [View Full Entry]

Clare got back from Thailand on the 7th of April. I'm insanely jealous that I couldn't go with her but every time that I went to Hong Kong she was envious of me, so I guess this makes us even now.. sort of. We had been planning a day trip to Hangzhou for two months before we eventually got the opportunity on the 17th April. Hangzhou is the provincial capital of Zhejiang, and is always listed as a must-do day trip from Shanghai. We had been looking forward to going for ages as we had heard that the West Lake is [View Full Entry]

The girls and Kevin both had a Monday off for "tomb sweeping". The Chinese have this day so that they can go and pay their respects to the dead and I assume clean up their graves. To us it was a day off and gave us a long weekend to enjoy. Saturday was a washout unfortunately, which meant we would just enjoy a very lazy day. It was so lazy that I took a nap in the afternoon which is something I never do! We enjoyed lots of games and TV with the kids and then in the evening we had [View Full Entry]

Yvonne and I visited suppliers in Ningbo and Suzhou in Sept. 2008. Our schedule was very tight, but we still manged to have a sightseeing to the symbolic resorts in Ningbo and Suzhou. The first stop was Ningbo. This city has not many famous sights but it is well-known by being the hometwon of Chiang Kai-shek. To be more specific, the Fenghua city in Ningbo is Chiang kai-shek's hometown. The seond stop is Suzhou, world-wide famous for its wonderful classical gardents inlcuding Humble Administrator's Garden, the Surging Wave Pavilion, the Lion Grove Garden etc. What a pity we only had hal [View Full Entry]

*Last weekend I went to Suzhou*. USAC had another field trip to Suzhou, which was about a 2-hour bus ride from Shanghai University. The bus left at around 9 am and I was TIRED. I pretty much slept the whole way. First we went to Humble Administrative Garden. It was basically a garden with a lot of mini bridges, water, and trees. The scenery was beautiful, so I definitely took some pictures. Outside the garden were some shops so I spent some time buying souveniers and a flute thing called a Tao Xun. The Tao Xun is a [View Full Entry]
