Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

I remember watching a lot of late-night local TV programmes during my first trip to China. It was not by choice since local channels were all the hostels (that I stayed in) had. The content of the programmes best remains forgotten, but a particular advertisement has left a lasting impression for the most part because it was on almost every channel! It was an old school montage of scenic videos where in his most mellifluous voice, the narrator rhapsodized over the natural beauty and charm of Hangzhou, particularly, the West Lake. I have no idea how much of the city's immense [View Full Entry]

U.N. Day October 2008 Asia » China » Zhejiang » Ningbo
Every month or so our school has some huge, full on, community event. You can imagine what it does to a teacher's schedule (and my anxiety) and all stake holders in the community are there! September was Pinwheels for Peace. October was U.N. Day, followed by Halloween. Last week, we had the latest, the Holiday Bazaar. U.N. Day was probably the most time consuming and most unique. You can see some great photos online at our school website (www.aian.org.cn) but I wanted to share this video with you all (Luckily for us, the Beilun news was there). I'm nowhere to be [View Full Entry]

Beilun BBQ-October 2008 Asia » China » Zhejiang » Ningbo
We are a little slow updating our adventures! I wanted to share some of our photos from Beilun BBQ Association. We went to one of their gatherings and had Brazilian BBQ-style food. A bus picked us up, then we hung out there, lots of Chinese people were enamored with us...some even asked if there were many cool couples like Desi and I back in America! That was after the boys hit on me, and the girls hit on Desi! Ha! What else? Oh, Desi battled with a school parent over which kebab was ours and which was hers. Of course, when [View Full Entry]

USA vs. China! Asia » China » Zhejiang » Ningbo
Free tickets were given to back in October to go see "a basketball team from Chicago" play a Zhejiang team here in Beilun. We went down to the big stadium near our house and were real excited to see this Chicago team play this regional team. How cool! We had been missing watching some good basketball! So we walk in, all eyes on us, and we notice that the game has started. Chinese people were in our seats, they refused to get up, and where we wanted to sit, Chinese people refused to let us sit down. We finally get to [View Full Entry]

After passing our 1 1/2 month marker of our time here in Shanghai, Ollie and I were really looking forward to getting out of Shanghai to experience a different part of China. We've definitely settled into life here now - we're comfortable with our surroundings and with our routines. We have our favourite restaurants, favourite things to do, and also have our least favourite things about life here too. Happily Ollie has 2 friends living in China right now with whom he'd spent his elementary and high school years with. Eva, originally from Hong Kong, currently lives here in Shanghai and [View Full Entry]

Oct's holiday we went to NingHai, to see pretty creek. I had a foreign friend Phillip with me. He had never gone a hikking liked this time, no hotwater, no guide, no toilet and had to face some food problem. I mean some very very simple dish are far from western food. Seems it was kind of hard for him. But however we had a lot of fun, which had crossing river by walk and I fell into the water. Fortunately our equipments keeped dry and nothing lost. That's the best part of our journey. I'd like to put the detailed [View Full Entry]

We started Thursday morning by discussing apartments we'd seen over a free hostel breakfast (which for me is usually coco pops and for Clare it's usually some horrible looking adzuki bean gruel and vegetable dumplings). We checked out of our room at noon because we'd decided that since Clare wouldn't be starting her training for her job until the 9th October, and I probably wont be working for about a month, that we'd have a little holiday for a few days. This is also probably our last chance to get away from Shanghai until the Spring Festival in February. We'd discussed [View Full Entry]

One Month in China! Asia » China » Zhejiang » Ningbo
It's official! We've been here for a full month! I'd say that we are doing pretty well and are living fairly comfortably. We did have a rather stressful, 4-day work week (Open House Evening) but at least that is behind us now and everything was perfectly fine! The last week has been very eventful. Two Friday's ago we were invited to the Moon Festival Celebration at Harborland. Mr. Lee (yes, the same businessman that owns our school, apartment complex, and half of Beilun) put on a free evening for all of us teachers, etc. Harborland is comparable to Enchanted Forest or [View Full Entry]
