Our trip to China began with a 9.5 hour flight from Melbourne to Guangzhou. After clearing immigration and collecting our bags we headed to the departures area again to check in for our next flight to Kunming. We struggled to find the check in counter and eventually realised this is because there is a second terminal at Gungzhou airport. We caught the bus to the second terminal and queued up at the service counter to see whether we could be transferred to an earlier flight. Queued is a somewhat generous term as it seems that word doesn't exist in China (how did we forget that?!). I eventually embraced the local etiquette glared / strategically positioned myself so others couldn't cut in and spoke to a lady who didn't seem to understand me that well so dismissively ... read more

Hi All. Just a day to spend in Dali so rented an ebike again for 100 rmb for the day. This bike was rather more robust than the one in Daocheng, which was a blessing as I did put it into a small ditch at one point. ?? There are markets in the villages all around Dali and on Fridays a very large market is held in YouSuo. YouSuo took just over and hour to reach on the ebike. The market was wonderfully colourful with many of the woman wearing traditional Bai minority costume. We were looking for the local Batik cloth and we managed to find some and the stall owner told us where to go to find larger pieces. After visiting the market we rode back along the west side of the lake along ... read more

Hi All, So good to be out of the mountains and at a much lower elevation. A 4 hour bus ride south from Shangri-la and we arrived in Lijiang. Stayed in a small hotel close to Mu Palace, very quiet and secluded. Lovely to relax and ease away the strains of mountain hiking. Really enjoyed our few days here walking the sometimes heaving othertimes empty old streets. The Naxi food has also been excellent especially the black eyed bean tofu in a spicy sauce. Moving on towards Dali tomorrow. Looking forward to that Enjoy the photos JAH Bless ... read more

Hi All. After Mingyong it was back to Shangri-la for a couple of nights. I was really looking forward to seeing the old town and I was really disappointed. It felt empty and lifeless. The monastery also felt to be rather soulless when compared to the temples and monasteries we had seen in Sichuan. Never mind. On to Lijiang. Enjoy the photos JAH Bless ... read more

The western hills is certainly a place that must not be missed while visiting Kunming. To get there, I caught the cable car that transported me all the way up to the hills. The short trip is quite scenic, travelling over the (dianchihu), it is an emerald coloured lake and the views over the city are quite good. I am particularly attracted by the parks having some fine temples up in the mountains, but there is always this bloody entrance fees that are absurdly expensive. Paid all the entrance fees, I started the climb to the beautiful (lingxu) pavilion, which is about 2,500 meters above sea level and with great views over the dianchi lake. Today the heat was bearable, the gentle breeze dried away all my sudor and giving that sensat... read more

Hi All It was an 8 hour journey from Daocheng to Shangri-la through a beautiful river gorge along roads which were generally good. After an overnight in Shangri-la we took a bus for another 4 hours to Deqin. To get to Mingyong we had to hire a car for 150 RMB. The journey to Mingyong was wonderful with the mountains in the background as we descended into the Mekong river gorge. Just so pretty. The price structure had changed for the park and a ticket for the glacier cost 78 RMB. Mingyong is a small farming village with a few hotels and a few restaurants and little else. Our driver was telling us that he remembers that it used to take his grandparents 2 weeks to walk to the nearest town and back. Up early and ... read more

The Yunnan Safari is a great place to see, if staying in Kunming a few days, it is only a few kilometers away from downtown. It is the only mountainous park in China where you can see wild animals from allover the world in a fairly open space and enjoying them as you were in their natural habitat, it is really pristine. Getting there it was all but easy; I had to take three buses, the trip lasted over two hours but the problem was that, at the end, I got at the wrong place, because I was following the indications given to me by the navigator and I should have arrived nearby the entrance of the Safari Park but instead I was still a few kilometers away from it. As I got off the bus ... read more

Perhaps the essence of travel is discovering if your dreams are real. We conjure images of far-off locales based on what we read, hear or desire and spend a lot of time and effort searching to discover if the vision we see in our head can be matched by any form of reality. While most don't see past a warm sea, gentle breeze, swaying hammock and slightly bronzed skin, a few have more vivid visions of their own personal paradise. Some travelers have more advanced imaginations and maybe their travel palettes have a few more additional colors than the average housewife visiting Hawaii has. Throughout history, some of these 'destinations' have become legendary. Whether they actually existed or not, their descriptions have driven many an intrepid soul to follow their calling, no matter the cost or ... read more

At 5:00 AM I woke up to get on a private car to Guangzhou airport to catch a flight from Gz to Kuming got super early I’m the Morning. (Dongguan the city where I live does not have an airport so it’s either HK, ShenHen or Guanzhou and based on my experience GZ is easiest and cheapest to travel within China and Asia. I arrived super early to the airport which meant I had to wait about 30minutes to check in counter to open and nothing was open. I did my check in and security and tried to find a place for breakfast nothing opened. So I just chilled and waited for my flight. The flight was pretty smooth except for the heat which was pretty hot and I could not breath. I tried to tell ... read more
