Cancel a trip yet? My cousins cancelled their trip to Japan this month. But I am boarding a plane tomorrow for a short flight to Vegas. What should you do? What is corona virus? Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that spreads from person to person. Around 80% of people recover without requiring special treatment. The virus, which first appeared in Wuhan, China, has since spread to 53 countries. Of the roughly 84,000 reported cases, China accounts for over 78,800. Older people and those with preexisting conditions – including high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes – are the most likely to develop a severe illness as a result of COVID-19. Well, I definitely would stay out of Asia. And not just because of the Corona virus, but because much of the region is ... read more

We've spent fourteen hours in the air and two nights in Shanghai since the last update. After we landed in Shanghai we took the maglev into town. I've told lots of people about how exciting riding it is but, it really is amazing. You can really feel the speed and it's amazing to be looking out onto the Chinese country side. Riding the maglev gives me the same feeling as riding a big wheel! We took the metro (subway) to our hostel and have been using it to get all around town. It took about as long to get accustomed to as any public transit system you've never ridden in the US before. Thankfully there are English directions under all the Chinese. The trains are all connected like one big long car and they're really smooth ... read more

July 14th, 2011 This morning, we went back to the 7-Colour Flower E. S. for different cultural activities such as table tennis, Kung Fu, Tea ceremony, and yo-yo activities. We had great fun! After having a tasty lunch we arrived at the circus town to participate in the closing ceremony. All 800 summer camp students from all over the world were there. We went in a dome-shaped building that was very big. I got a good view of the stage. After the closing ceremony, there were two parts for the circus act, the first part was performed by other students, and it was something like a talent show. The first part was very interesting; there were many talented performers and they performed acts such as: martial arts, playing instruments, singing and etc. The first part was ... read more

After a fulfilling breakfast at about 7:30 in the morning and some getting ready, we went out of the hotel to visit a community centre. That centre was just celebrating China’s 90 year anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. There were lots of models of planes, tanks and weapons used during historical times and a wide range of visual arts of ancient Chinese paintings and calligraphies. We also saw some children doing some arts and crafts with beads and a fitness room. We were introduced to a Chinese instrument called the Er Hu and the teacher even performed some of the most famous songs for us. There was also another teacher that showed us the paper cutting of a bird on a tree and a dragon. In the short time, we were very amazed at ... read more

What sound is that?! it started with a spot of fireworks in front of my apartment. After a while, you hear another one 18 deg northeast, then 198 deg southwest, then 360 deg you see fireworks everywhere through the night! It's the 4th day of the Lunar New Year. It's believed that the God of Fortune will come visit and people believed in lighting firecrackers to welcome the God of Fortune. Xintiandi has a almost 20mins of fireworks at 12midnight. Who needs to come watch Fireworks Festival? I can sit in comfort at home to catch the most extensive unorchestrated fireworks show I've seen ever.... read more

For those of you regularly reading my travel blog, you may be getting tired of reading about the World Expo. If that's the case, you'll be glad to know that this was our last visit until the fall, when we hope to make one or two more trips. I'm a few weeks late posting this, as our actual trip was on July 8th. Before going to the Expo, we looked really close at the map to see what the largest areas we hadn't been to so far were and we mapped out our route. The only problem was - for some unknown reason (since I don't speak much Chinese), the taxi driver wouldn't take us to the entrance we wanted to go to. So, we decided to do our route backwards, which worked out OK. We ... read more

On June 25th, we took our 3rd trip to the Expo. We're getting the hang of everything there now, and it helps knowing what to expect. The main difference from the past two times was that the entire day was rainy! I think I preferred the rain over extreme heat though, even having to dodge all the umbrellas! I was impressed that the pavillions handed out plastic bags for your umbrellas as you entered. We are never quite sure exactly which entrance we will be arriving at because the driver has been taking us so far, then we switch to a special Expo taxi which is "supposed" to get us closer to the actual entrance. Well, after finally getting an Expo taxi after 25 mins, I realized after getting dropped off (at Gate 8) that there ... read more

So it was back to the Expo. In an attempt to beat the queues, I headed off early - to get into the park at opening time. I had reckoned without the airport-style security. So I arrived for 9.30 and got into around 10.30. I naively headed first to the Chinese provinces pavillion, only to be told that it was entrance by reservation only. I couldn't really be bothered to queue for a reservation, so I headed instead for the Japan pavillion, right at the end of the Asian zone. I had also underestimated how fascinated the Chinese visitors would be by the Japanese pavillion (perhaps surprising given the lingering resentment after the violent Japanese occupation of the East coast of China). I joined the queue thinking optimistically that it would be an hour wait tops. ... read more
