Dalian Travel Blogs

Background: For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Cleaning up my act!
Cleaning up my act!
In this shot you can see the water intake coming from the sink on the left, the drain on the floor beside the toilet and the power cord stretching up to eye level on the right. It was in stepping over... [more]
Some random topics that don’t necessarily fit into a blog of their own…. Several people commented on the washing machine stories. I thought I would include a picture of the facility. My streak of washing machine events without a problem was cut short at one. Carrying the machine into the bathroom (I don’t like to wheel it on the hardwood floors) I managed to knock the drain hose out of its clip and it leaked all over the floor. When I clipped the intake hose onto the sink tap I obviously didn’t secure it properly because when I turned on the [View Full Entry]

New apartment in Kai Fa Qu Asia » China » Liaoning » Dalian » Dalian
As of today, I have a new home in China. I went to view three apartments today, and the third--on the twenty-third floor of a year-old buidling, was the winner. It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two floors, with views to the ocean, the city skyline, and the mountains (as well as one giant apartment building directly in front of me, but who notices that?). The apartment has never been lived in, and is unfurnished, so as part of the rental agreement, the landlords will take me shopping for the new furniture, which will really make it feel like home! Old Building
Here's a view into the Old Building of campus, where my office is on the third floor.
It's been a while since I've written, and the reason for this is due to the frenetic pace of the classes (and marking) that we've had as of late. The classes are starting to feel more comfortable to me (despite the stress of the end of term and first report cards looming). I've finished teaching one full term of art and drama and now the kids in each respective section switch to whichever course (art or drama) that they haven't had and I teach the whole thing over again until next semester when I get a whole new group of kids. Of course he's the cutest baby ever born!
for this important announcement from the home front. Russell and Heather had a baby boy on October 20th! yahoo! When I announced this to my students who have been following the exploits of "Mr. Wilson's family" there was great excitement. They we amazed to know that we knew we had a new grandson, that he weighed 7 lb 15 oz (3,600 grams over here I am told) but that I still don't know his name! From some reason Russ and Heather seem to be busy. I am sure he has one and will no longer be known as PTBNL (person to [View Full Entry]

Ankunft in Dalian Asia » China » Liaoning » Dalian » Dalian

Dienstag gibts dann erstmal ne kleine Stadtführung, mit allem was dazu gehört (Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, etc.). [View Full Entry]

The bus could hold 30 passangers when the center seats are folded down. Fortunately we didn't need them for this trip. Not sure what the BC Highways Minister would think of these buses but they worked... [more]
This rather belated entry in the blog describes our first foray into the Chinese countryside away from the school. The entry was delayed partly because I have had more than a few problems since my PC packed it in, the most recent being trouble moving files around on a PC running Vista. Sigh… The Chinese wife of one of the teachers runs a travel agency, massage centre and computer repair shop (sounds like something out of M*A*S*H). She organized a weekend bus trip to PanJin about two hours north of here. Twenty or so hardy souls loaded onto the bus early [View Full Entry]

Here are pictures of our new appartment in Kaifaqu, Dalian. We are setteled in our new place and enjoying it very much, the move was well worth it. I, Abigail am working on the homey touches, as you will notice the appartment does look a little bare right now. More pictures to come of our past week of traveling to Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou. Well, we have survived the first three weeks of school with only a few bumps along the road. The first came on the first day of school when it turned out the school’s scheduling software went on the fritz and we had no class schedules for the first day of school. With about a third of the teachers being new to the school and to China, the potential for disaster was certainly there. In the wee hours prior to the opening bell, a team came up with Plan B for the approximately 2,400 students and it worked out pretty well. Frustrated [View Full Entry]
