Taizhou City is hot and humid this June, with temperatures of over 36 degrees Celcius, deep and sweltering 95+ Fahrenheit. Though the topography is flat, as in Florida, the sun is rarely visible; late-afternoon as a small gold-red ball through the haze from my balcony, making me appreciate the "Miami blue and green tropics". After loosing myself for hours in the city, my A/C and apartment offered a comfortable refuge from the stifling air, and familiarizing myself in this sprawling bee-hive of a city, encouraged a well-deserved rest in the "Chilled-Crib" on campus. My new surroundings are becoming more familiar, though I am still the object of curiosity where-ever I walk. I'm definitively not sure if they are giggling at my size, or with joy of having said "hello", probably the first time to a Westener. ... read more

Since Taizhou College is located on the outskirts of Taizhou City, my college-apartment is situated in the sub-urbs rather than the urban area. Still, eight floors below me, re-verberate the sounds of a city on the move, every imaginable city-sound being well represented, as in a loud and ill-tuned and ill-managed orchestra, that somehow makes irrational sense. Anytime I walk the street of this "small" city of 5 million, the focus of people passing, will suddenly shift from their conversations with each other, as well as from their "required" concentration on the ever-dangerous-city-road ahead, and they turn and act in surprise, feasting their stare on the odd and corpulent Western Gentleman passing them. At first, they are not quite sure what to make of this handsome face and how to react. They often find each others ... read more

This week Hans and I were given the opportunity to visit local primary schools in order to observe the annual English Teaching competitions. Each year, all over China, similar competitions are held in order to give Primary School teachers a chance to showcase their skills and abilities to peers, parents and authorities. This is an opportunity to really build your status as well as that of your school and also to share pedagogically what you have learned as a teaching professional. In China, teachers who are considered the “best” are given postings at the “best” schools and are given the “best” students. Competitions like this are of some importance in determining your “ranking”, other factors being your qualifications, experience and ongoing commitment to study. Conversely, if you are considered of “lower rank” you are often sent ... read more

My first term/semester at Taizhou Teachers College has simply flown by! It’s been an amazing experience and I have met some of the loveliest young people you could ever wish to meet. It is time to say “Good bye and catch you next year”. For my students, it’s just the end of the first chapter, so to speak, as they have yet to sit their term final exams for all other subjects. Some are also preparing for National English exams and other “self study” exams. I don’t know how they have the time (and space in their brains!) to do all of it! However, in this highly competitive, demanding environment, they cannot afford to miss any opportunity to boost their qualifications in order to have that edge on the next person. Many have little or no ... read more

It is a week of teaching-competitions, and my friend Arthur has been making spectacular efforts, for us to observe the local English-teachers perform their lesson in front of an audience of parents and teachers, in front of demanding judges, in front of extremely orderly students, in a variety of schools. This is the time in Jiangsu Province, when teachers are encouraged to show their "best practices", developed in their classroom, share them pedigogically with other teachers, and have a moment to shine as professionals, ...and that for pay of about 1,000 Yuan, or about $120.00 !!!! per MONTH as a beginning teacher. Oh woe, the value of education around the world!! I have never seen a similar competition in other countries I have visited, and the courage of the individual instructors to expose themselves to an ... read more

My new colleague Hans (Schneider) has arrived a couple of months early in order to settle in before the start of the new school year in September. We hit it off immediately and have had a number of stimulating conversations about life, the universe and everything. In his first couple of weeks here he has made a big impression on the locals, especially due to his penchant for taking a myriad of photos of what many people here would probably consider mundane and of little interest. An added bonus is Hans brought his camera printer dock with him and so he is able to take photos one day, then give his subjects a copy the very next day. As you can imagine, they absolutely love this. Hans was here last summer to “scope” the place out ... read more

The Art of a Banquet: The dining experience is traditionally an important event in China. Not only honoring a guest, it establishes and deepens personal relationships and fosters and encourages enthusiastic appreciation for one another. Pre-dating the time of Marco Polo, it is as much a ritual of food, as it is a festival of the "choicest" and the most "exotic" morsels. The sharing of food and drink re-enforce respect and admiration and gratitude for each other's on-going relationships, and continues to re-new, nurture, and deepen friendships. Upon invitation, as it was the case with the family of my student in these photos, the guests are escorted and ushered into a private room, usually on the upper floor of the restaurant. The privacy offers a gracious host the opportunity to focus and express gratitude for the ... read more

During the morning, my friend Arthur called me at my apartment and suggested a visit to one of the elite schools of Taizhou, not far from the college. Students were about to take a nation-wide battery of demanding college-entrance-examinations, spanning the next 4 days. The results are to decide each student's future. I was not prepared for what was waiting for me: The school is situated next to a wide and important street, and consists of a large complex of impressive buildings, with a grand entrance and iron gate, gold and red banners flapping in the morning wind. I have passed the school several times with little fanfare, but this morning there was great commotion. The street was no longer accessable to any motored vehicle, blocked at both ends by police cars. Hundreds of mothers and ... read more
