Hi All, Today we finally got to see the Longmen Grottoes. These caves are about 15 kms outside the city. We got there without much problem. The only problem we are having at the minute is the heat. It has been around 30 degrees today, which isn't that much of a problem, with around 75-80% humidity, which has been a problem. It feels like we are walking around inside a pressure cooker. we hope from the photos that you can see how big the place was. We started on the west side of the river and then crossed over to the east side and went up to the temple and walked around the gardens. If anyone is considering visiting I would seriously recommend coming here in spring or autumn because the heat has really been unbearable ... read more

Again with the typing in the dark. I wonder if I can do this at home. I feel pretty calm. Jin is, as usual, attached to Allen's hip and they are out for a walk. Bao is sprawled out on the bed. Now he has an eye infection. We are so hopeful that it is isolated from the eye injury as it is in the same eye. Still, he was the first one in the play room both days, and they are notorious for pink eye germs. Luckily, we have eye drops and again will have to wait and see. Bao is deep in sleep after the traumatic cleaning and reapplying of the bandage at the hotel doctor's office that took place earlier today. Fortunately, the doctor has a really big fish in a fishtank and ... read more

Bao slept for 12 hours last night and it appears to be just what we needed for his injury to start healing. Thanks so much for all of your comments and good wishes. Really appreciate it. He awoke with his bandage off but we just put another one on with more of that powder. As long as we can avoid injury today....We are going to the Henan Provincial Museum today and both boys are going to be strapped into their strollers the entire time. At least, this is my plan....we are going to visit the hotel doctor again today. She has really taken to Bao and he doesn't seem to mind being around a doctor because she has a fishtank in her office with a huge fish. In all of this bedlam, forgot to attach some ... read more

Okay, am starting to see what people mean when they say that when you have one child, the parents can still control. When you have two, it is really more like twelve. We took the boys downstairs to breakfast this morning, which began in a general atmosphere of peace and calm. How quickly it degenerated. Bao insisted on taking his milk in a coffee cup which means that the chair he was sitting in (because he refused the highchair) got most of the milk. Jin decided today to toddle around the breakfast area and show all of the diners the egg in his mouth. Bao ran between a waiter's legs while he was attempting to balance a number of trays. The entire area dissolved into chaos within, what seemed like, mere seconds. And am so embarrassed ... read more

Well, the day started off pretty peaceably, actually, pretty well really. We awoke leisurely and went down to have our first breakfast meal together as a family. Jin did great, he ate watermelon, yogurt, egg and cereal and smiled quite a bit at breakfast. We had to do registration and notary paperwork today, so were just preparing to meet everyone in the lobby when Allen said "Bao split his eye open!" Heart in my mouth, I rushed over and he was bleeding heavily and screaming from a pretty steep cut above his eye (thankfully not in his eye). There is a marble sill that runs along the length of our window and Allen said he slipped on it. We cleaned it and bandaged it and raced down to the lobby to go, but it started really ... read more

I am writing in absolute darkness as Allen is at an adoption paperwork meeting and I have one boy sleeping on a bed and another in a crib. We got into a bus at about 9:30 a.m. and drove to a nearby government office. We were told that the children would arrive at different times as some were coming from far away and some were pretty close. Just when they said we had to listen carefully I spotted a man walk in with Jin and set him down. "Jin's here, Jin's here", I shouted to Allen. After that, neither one of us could listen anymore. It was so hard to get to him as they were so many people in between us. The man picked him up again and placed him in my arms. He immediately ... read more

It is 5 a.m. and I am writing in semi-darkness. Bao is still asleep and has been so since 5 yesterday. Today is the day. Am trying not to have too big of an expectation regarding the much anticipated first meeting of Bao and Jin. Yesterday at the airport while waiting for flights/bags/etc., I tried to talk to Bao about getting a brother. I asked him what he will do when he sees him. I said that Jin is waiting for Bao. Bao said "Hit Jin", swatting at the air in front of him. Then I asked him what he will say when he sees him, and he said "Sorry" which means that he is still planning on the hitting. Then someone else asked Bao about getting a brother, and he said "Go away Jin" and ... read more

We are here in Jin's province, Henan, and in the same city where he is staying, Zhengzhou. Cannot believe the day is finally near. As I sit here looking out the huge picture window at the fish and rock pond below, Bao is fast asleep on the bed in just a diaper. I am hot because although I am enjoying the nice picture window in our room, the air con cannot keep up with the sweltering heat outside. They just brought in the baby cribs and I told them that and now they have left the door open. Wouldn't that make it hotter in here? I am irritated and shouldn't be as they are trying the best they can. I start unpacking but Bao follows behind me like a shadow, reaching into suitcases as far as ... read more

The Quest Goes South, and Other Tales from the Middle Kingdom The festival of DuanWuJie is a time for racing dragon boats and eating zongzi - nuggets of rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. Alas I didn’t achieve the first, but I did achieve the second on my trip to Zhengzhou. I took the trip 700km south of Beijing to Henan province to visit a friend, and to see the sights the province (which has a larger population than Germany) has to show. Kaifeng After I had arrived by overnight train to the bustling station at Zhengzhou we took a morning bus for a day trip to Kaifeng. Kaifeng is an old capital of China - centre of the Northern Song (Bei Song) dynasty a thousand years ago. Though it was built 25km south of the yellow ... read more
